Matthjass Matthjass Oh that quite unfortunate. I am happy that you enjoyed them eitherway.

You've got some nice idea's there, very well done.

As for your spirit battle idea's.
I'm assuming the first one are the robot armours from the Ace Attorney crossover
2nd one, Anton
3rd one, the Specter
4th one is that witch lady from the crossover, forgot her name, and espella.
5th one is Targent

The last three escape me, memories of the series is kinda foggy lately, should probably replay them.
Those are nice idea's though.

By the way, this just came up.

There was a problem fetching the tweet

Looks like we might finally get some Layton news soon. Or at least, a confirmation of the English localization of the anime or the release of Pandora's Box HD (or both) maybe...

Also Xander Mobus is apparently showing up there. Someone ask him to should "Professor Layton" for us if he does requested voice lines lol.
Dang was just about to post that!

I hope we get Pandora’s (Diabolical) Box HD, I really want to replay the whole original trilogy again.

Ahh maybe I should have waited for you to post that as I was replying to Matthjass Matthjass since you're the first post on the new page now...

Oh well, here's the repost of the Tweet. Level-5 will be present at the upcoming Anime Expo 2019

How exciting! Diabolical Box was my first Layton game so I'm hoping for that, or maybe an anime dub on one of the Disney channels. I feel like Katrielle and the gang could blow up in popularity.

A Layton anime in general would most likely do really well in the west. Especially in Europe.

I always wondered why it took them this long to release an anime for the series. Sounds like it would have done really well over here. Hopefully they will finally rectify it soon.

Hey there, dropping by from the Geno thread to say that Professor Layton could be an interesting character choice. I've only played the first game and the Phoenix Wright crossover, so he could potentially be very unique if his fencing skills don't take up too much of his moveset (the whole sword user thing has become a source of constant criticism among fans). I'd be interested in seeing what he could bring to the table.

Hey welcome on board MattX20, I've added you to the supporters list!

And yeah I do agree that most of his moveset should focus more towards the puzzles and gadgets he's build over the course of the series as that represents the main core aspects of the series as a whole.

If he where to use something like a fencing sword or lead pipe, then it should be used very sparingly. Probably like one Smash attack or so. Or alternatively, give him some extra fencing moves and attacks whenever he holds a battering item like the Beam Sword or Lips Stick. After all, Layton doesn't have a sword of his own but instead makes use of whatever battering weapon he finds lying around at the spur of the moment. Which is kind of like how items work in Smash too.

But that's just me.

Curious Villager Curious Villager Thanks !

You got a few spirit battles right. Here are the answers :
The 1st one is actually Layton and Randall (:ultroy:) fighting the mummies in the Akdabain ruins in Miracle Mask.
The 2nd one is of course Anton.
The 3rd one is the Specter.
The 4th one is indeed the two witches from the crossover.
The 5th one could be Targent I guess, but I imagined it would be Layton, Luke (:ultyounglink:) and Future Luke (:ultlink:) fighting the bad guys at the casino in Lost Future.
The 6th one is the fight against the armored knights and the Storyteller (:ultrobin:) in the crossover.
The 7th one is kind of difficult, too… It’s the second puzzle battle in Lost Future, when Layton and the other are all in the cafe at the end of the game. :ultdoc: is Alain Stahngun.
The 8th one is the famous puzzle in Curious Village : the wolf (:ultwolf:), the sheep (:ultjigglypuff:) and the cabbage (:ultivysaur:) who have to cross a river.

Oh, new Layton content confirmed ? Nice ! Does someone know when that Anime Expo is coming ?

Ahh those make sense. They where like puzzles. Nice one there.

As for the Anime Expo. It's on July 4-7, at least according to a user on Reddit.

Allegedly Snack World has been rated by the Australian rating board, so with any luck it'll be brought up at the event.
There is a silhouette of it included at the Tweet at the top left corner. So yeah, we might be getting some news about that too.
Which is a bit of a surprise since I believe I heard that it didn't do too well in Japan but I guess we'll see how it will be received in the West if it is coming along too.

Not sure if this question has been asked, but would Katrielle work well as an alt character skin for the Professor if he got in?

I'm not really sure, they kind of have different body builds and proportions going on and all. So it depends what sort of design they go for that suits them both. Especially with Hershel as he has been given different proportions in some occasions.

She might work better as an echo or semi clone though, I'm not as sure as far as alternate costumes go though...

Maybe

Anyway

There was a problem fetching the tweet

Looks like they started teasing Pandora's/Diabolical Box HD for mobile (Like they did with Curious Village HD), so I guess they will be revealing that at the anime expo and most likely release it on the same day.
Which probably means we will most likely be seeing Unwound/Lost Future HD come out in Japan very soon and in the west probably in December/January

Hopefully they will confirm the LMJ anime and Switch port's Western release too. Then all that's left is the brand new Switch entry, hopefully they will reveal that at the upcoming Level-5 Vision conference.

Exciting stuff.

Has somebody tried to print that image and fold it around? It seems like there's a puzzle there with the serial number.

Incidentally, I was thinking about that earlier. Does Hershel's hat factor into this?

This guy did. Oh man this is cool.
Thinking about it, I wonder how they will do this puzzle now, since you had to physically look up the manual and fold the ticket inside for this one.

Assuming they give his top hat a hurtbox. If its something like Wedding Mario and the top hat mii fighter, then probably not...

Excited for the Pandora’s/Diabolical Box remake, I think Folsense is still my favorite Layton series town.

What’s y’all favorite town/village in the series?
Overall my favorite game is Unwound Future but I'm with you in that Folsense is my favorite location. I adored the mystery and world and aesthetic.

I also have a massive soft spot for Labyrinthia and the characters in it, especially Barnham.

I think St.Mystere probably had the most memorable NPC's. Though that's probably because you spend the whole game in a small town whereas in later entries you move around to different places more often and explore larger area's (or sometimes you're blocked off from older locations entirely once you reach a certain point in the stories), thus not giving you as much of a chance to connect with most of the NPC's. the prequels tried to rectify that with the Episode feature though.

My most favourite will probably have to be Future London though. Lost Future is probably my most favourite entry in the series and the town is overal lots of fun to explore. Becky is probably my favourite minor NPC in the series.

Wait, what? Then... How did I do it?

First time I played Layton was through... less than legal means. I guess I must've used a walkthrough?

Favorite town is probably St. Mystere. I think the atmosphere there is so freaking mysterious in a very nostalgic way.

Oh really? I think the puzzle told you to refer to the ticket in the game's manual. Perhaps it was only a suggestion. Not that the puzzle itself was all that difficult to figure out, mind you.

There was also that final story puzzle, where you had to blow into the mic. Though I guess being on mobile, that should be easily doable.

Though the Switch on the other hand doesn't have one I believe, so that would be interesting to think about how they will tackle that if they decide to port the game there...

perhaps they'll have a digital version of the ticket for some versions

im sure there was another game with a similar puzzle in box that had it recreated digitally for its virtual console release (startropics i think)

That last puzzle was the reason I bought microphone for my PC. The irony of pirating a game only to end up spending money on it was not lost on me.

They nailed it first time with St Mystere man.

St Mystere feels like a village that could exist yet with a strong whiff of fantasy and whimsy that makes these games what they are. I'm sceptical of big open worlds (there's often nothing in them) and when the setting is smaller and more intimate, you always get a stronger mystery and curiosity assuming there is any depth to what you see before you. Curious Village certainly has that. Just look to Agatha Christie for more examples of how smaller settings can pack so much. You get to know the characters and the setting so very well and seeing it all unravel (or perhaps I should say, seeing it all come together) as you unpick the village's knot and learn more about it and its various residents is immensely satisfying.

Less is definitely more with Layton's settings in my opinion.

A shoutout has to go to Future London though. Future London feels like a real space again with lots of tangible depth to it. I don't think it does it as well as St Mystere (a side effect of the increased scale no doubt - we've gone from a hamlet village to a full blown city) and it is let down by certain plot points related to why and how it exists, but on the whole, super good and very memorable.

They've never done it as good as in the first game though, in my opinion. To be honest I don't think any of the other games come close. As good as they all are (perhaps not Azran Legacy) St Mystere is just so good. Haven't played LMJ so I cannot comment there, but I would like to see the series scale down and return to the Agatha Christie style of atmosphere they began with.

Also, aesthetically, St Mystere is just spellbinding. None of the million locations in Azran Legacy can hold a candle to the creativity and charm of St Mystere. I think that applies to pretty much every game after CV though to be honest except maybe the second game. It really is that good!

Would be a fantastic stage for Smash by all accounts. Truly iconic for the series.

Yeah I think that's part of the charm with St. Mystere. Curious Village doesn't seem to be as popular with the general Layton fandom these days. From what I've seen at least.

But I personally still think it has its charm and due to its short and sweet nature, has a bit more replay value too as a pick up and play game, at least compared to some of the later entries.

I still remember most of the NPC's of CV even their names, and that's because you keep running into them as the story progresses, whereas in later entries, you don't really interact with them as much besides the occasional stand out NPC's you revisit a few times such as Becky or Cookie/Bonnie. That's kind of something I miss in later entries, as I said before, they tried to make the NPC's more memorable by implementing the Episode system in the prequels so you could see what they are up to whenever Layton & co aren't around. And I think that's a good step in making them more significant in the world of Layton, rather than just the occasional person you meet and solve a puzzle for and say goodbye to.

I wouldn't mind seeing something Like Curious village again, Maybe do something akin to Majora's Mask, where you need to solve a mystery that also concerns the townspeople in it too, and you learn more and more about the overall mystery at hand as you help the townspeople within it and learn more about their stories. Thinking about it, I guess that's kind of what LMJ tried to do....

One thing I have heard though is that Curious Village was apparently a pretty scary game for a lot of fans (though granted, most of them where pretty young when they first played it) though I myself do remember myself being a tad unsettled when I first played the game. Especially when it came in regards to the tower of St. Mystere and the many warnings to stay away from it.

If they where to make it a stage for Layton, then perhaps they should design it to look very atmospheric. If its a travelling stage, then maybe the further away you are from the tower, the more bright and cheerful the village looks, but as you get closer to it, the overall atmosphere gets darker and overall more sad and depressing looking, maybe have it rain too as you go up the tower, but as you reach the top of the tower, you see a lone house at the top with normal weather surrounding it, maybe have a certain someone watch through the window from inside too. Which would perhaps show the contrast with the stage and the overall story of game.

Well, haven't been here like ... ever. I am a huge fan of the Professor Layton series. It is an amazing puzzle series. Back when I was in primary school here in The Netherlands, almost everyone played Professor Layton and when it was one of those days we were allowed to bring our DS to school due to a certain event or something, we helped each other out with the puzzles we couldn't solve. Almost everyone ended up with a copy of one of the Professor Layton games. We even watched the Layton movie in class. For me, Professor Layton is a huge part of my youth and I never realised how much I want the professor in Smash. Up until now, now that other characters are deconfirmed, like Rhythm Heaven and Ashley.

So that's why I am here. I want to have the main character of one of my favourite games when I was young in Smash. But... I don't think it's likely. I feel like Level-5 is really small and they're going to put in Phoenix Wright first. The Mii Costume theory is not looking good for Layton too. Maybe somebody can change my mind? I would love to see Layton as character #4 or #5. Although I think #4 would be more likely, because they're probably going to end with a big one.

Hey DutchPichu I've added you to the supporters list, welcome on board.

Oh wow, that's really cool that you had events like that back at school. I remember when I used to bring my DS to school and asked my Maths teacher to let the class solve some of the maths related puzzles in the layton series at the end of each lessons. Those were fun times.

Level-5 has actually grown into quite a large company ever since those early days of the Layton series and the company has become a mainstay at nintendo ever since. Their kind of like Atlus in that sense, who now has a character as well. I think they'd have a decent shot to get something for DLC.

As for the Mii costume theory, I wouldn't really rely on it too much for now as we still only have one instance of a themed Mii costume pack in the game right now. Lets see first if Square and Microsoft will also have an entire pack dedicated to themselves too before we jump into any conclusions there. Not to mention a possibility they might drop an extra mii fighter pack like they did last time.

As for Phoenix, I personally don't really view him as a real obstacle for the Prof, if anything I can see Sakurai including both characters due to the close shared relationship the two franchises and company owners have with each other.
Not to mention the fact that Sakurai has wanted to include both Heihachi along with Ryu but couldn't because he couldn't figure out how to translate his playstyle into Smash, not because he had to choose between the two. Not to mention with that sort of logic, would that mean that someone like Crash Bandicoot is now out of the running just because Banjo is in? We also have two JRPG franchises in the fighters pass as well now.

So yeah, I wouldn't worry about Phoenix. If he makes it in, its because Sakurai and nintendo made a deal to go for him as the next Capcom character.

Well, it would actually be cool to see both Phoenix and Layton in the same game, just like in the 3DS spin-off. Would be the best case scenario for me I think. Nintendo already published Layton games and I see Layton as an all-star for the (3)DS era. Hopefully Level-5 is not too hard to work with.

They should be fine. Hino has expressed lots of interest over the years to see the Prof make it into Smash and that he would be willing to make negotiations go as smooth as possible. So here's hoping...

Assuming the WOL datamine from a while ago comes true, we may get two more passes (if not standalone DLC), so that would at least give Hershel approximately 12 more chances to get in.

So far, so good.

Yeah that would be nice, but I wouldn't bank too much on those as their most likely there just for future proofing if they do decide to do another fighters pass.
Which I hope they do, it would at least give Hershel 7 or 12 more chances to make it in...

Yeah that would be nice, but I wouldn't bank too much on those as their most likely there just for future proofing if they do decide to do another fighters pass.
Which I hope they do, it would at least give Hershel 7 or 12 more chances to make it in...
Well, if lots of people jump in on the pass from just Banjo alone, I doubt they'd skip over money opportunity for the next couple years.

Hah, yeah. not to mention Dragon Quest for Japan.

From what I understood, Nintendo planned this Fighters Pass and Sakurai just went along with it. So I guess its entirely dependent on them on whether or not they will be going for another round or two and if they deem it as a profitable investment or not.

So I guess we'll see if they will plan another one after the success of Banjo and Hero.
