The One-and-only-London-Thread thread - Updates on first post

If it was a London only tournement (it is the London thread) then it would be pretty obvious, if it was nationals, as theres been no national tournement so far, it would probs be best just to seed by region.
so from EM would be Calzorz, Yeniths, Trio3 and Willz (I think).
NW would probs be Aiko, Oniboy, Smudge and me.
London would maybe be along the lines of Kira!, Fuzzy, Mako and Edwin (May have got the info wrong, I'm just going by what I've heard).
Of course some things may be out of balance but it couldn't be that bad.

On a related note, I'm looking into visiting London somewhere between June and September, I'll let you guys know as i know more.

I will definately try, only problem is that its during my group project, and I wouldn't want to let my group down, although it doesn't count for anything, labs may be closed on weekends (not sure). Also theres quite a big cash prize for the project winner, tbh, I'm not too bothered about winning, its mainly about letting my group down.

I'll definately see nearer the time though.

Toon Link's pretty overrated. Tough to deal with, but once you get used to the projectiles and break through the wall he's not too hard to deal with. Being Bowser, this is easier said than done, but if i can do it, so can everybody else (auroreon). Also, Marth is a cheat.

thought i'd put my 2 cents in:


1. Craiigg: Saw it in the staff shack real shame really, but I admire you're maturity for resigning.
2. A national brawl thread doesnt really work. Hurricane rev tried it and it failed. Brawl talk by region is fine.
3. Kira! saying hes not top few in London is BS. He is too good.
4. Toon Link imo is slightly underrated. He has an amazing Brickwall game, but once you get passed this he is very punishable and his recovery is generally poor (limited options + lag on landing)
5. Sonic is average at best. He has a nice number of tricks but lack of viable kill moves makes him suffer alot. He just has to work too hard.
6. imo top 3 in brawl = 1. MK 2. Snake 3. Marth and then the next few are tied between D3, Kirby, pikachu, falco

I think that Captain Falcon is underrated. If I was to play he would be moved up on the tier list.

just because he has 1 even-ish matchup with a low tier doesnt mean he automatically goes down alot. In melee, fox and falco can get combo'd by just about every low tier and yet theyre still top/high. A tier list is based on overall matchups and tournament placings. If snake does 2nd best in current tournaments, then he would generally considered 2nd on a tier list.

but there are always going to be people who do well with different characters. but just because 1 person does it, doesnt mean it happens alot. If you came 1st with fox regularly, it doesnt mean fox is top tier. If many people win with fox, then it does.

falco and mk only have a tiny advantage over snake, I don't think they really count for saying he isn't 2nd best. and why didnt you mention dedede?

Melee tier list and fox being #1 in the US is still contested. You can't speak about tiers without acknowledging their shifting nature. Due to Brawl tier lists being relatively young, things could change, Snake could move. Right now he's prevalent in tournament play and the characters (such as you claiming falcon 50/50) that are low tier that can match him are far and few between. An average snake player might get beaten by an average falcon but there will be far more above average snake players that will beat that average falcon later in tournament.

Snake's potential is greater than those low tier characters so by rights, more people play him. The more people play him the more likely there are to be better Snake players. This makes sense to me.

In melee, I think the emergence of some very high level Peach players (Armada, Forward and Vwins) may cause more people to play her and eventually elevate peach up a notch on tiers (maybe). Saying that she's as high as you can get below the 1337 tier characters anyway.

Snake's potential is greater than those low tier characters so by rights, more people play him. The more people play him the more likely there are to be better Snake players. This makes sense to me.

Some character's potential is underestimated as much as people see good players playing and want to get that good, wheres other characters (arguable which ones, but IMO luigi and pikachu, Mew2 are on the list... and maybe ganon ) don't get used enough to develop their metagame to its maximum potential.

I agree with most of VA's post, but I would argue that the ones who get picked up and used a lot at first get the most publicity and therefore more people choose to main them, then more of them win tourneys, then more people want to main them... etc.

You're wrong. Simply because characters like pikachu evolved as viable in response to the characters in high tier. The ones with the most potential are better at first because they have more obvious strength. Luigi was ridiculously bad in 2006 because people don't realise how he can gimp a fox, how to use his awkward recovery and moveset. The evolution of these characters is marred by the situation in metagame; i.e the metagame is made of spamming fsmash with marth, there is not a lot you can do against this with luigi.

When the game began to take shape as a serious competitive game, strategies arose with the lower tiers that make them more viable. They are hard to wield and often lead to people giving them up in favour of high tier. Although the opposite can now be said as well. i.e Eggz ditches Mario in favour of Fox, Coey gives up Sheik etc in favour of Luigi. It takes a pioneering player of exceptional skill to lay the foundations for a low tier to rise at this stage.

Also Mewtwo is in no way more playable at high level than he is at this point in time; Taj is possibly the only player than can be that good with him, regardless he has horrendous weaknesses.
