I believe the inherent intent of the message was to assert that move-set potential will not keep a character out of Smash. Something that I agree with wholeheartedly.
Well of course, I'm not saying that it's impossible to make a good moveset for him, I'm just wondering how they're going to differentiate him from the other FE characters in terms of style.

If he's similar to Marth but uses different sword techniques, that would work, but it'd be a little bit boring.

Ooooooor, they won't differentiate him. I mean, have we seen any actual clone characters yet?

Only Toon Link, which is kind of odd. He's literally the only clone in the entire cast. It makes me doubtful that they would make any newcomers clones this time around.

We'll have clones for sure, they'll probably be the unlockables though. That would explain why we haven't seen them yet.

And Toon Link can be somewhat justified in that, unlike every other clone, he's not the same height and build as the character he's a clone of.

Which is also why I think if Lucas is potentially being cut, its highly possible Falco might be cut as well, and Falco wasn't specifically mentioned by the leaker because Lucas and Ness was being debated; Falco was the obvious underdog in the Falco vs. Wolf debate, though.

Why would that be the case?

Custom movesets make Falco completely irrelevant. Most of his attacks are almost the same as fox's, and any of his custom specials can be assigned to Fox as alternates. Speed can also be adjusted in custom movesets, and since Falco is the exact same height and build as Fox (just like Wolf), Falco is literally completely irrelevant.

All Wolf needs is minor adjustments to his specials, perhaps getting some new specials, and he's fully original. Plus he's more popular in Star Fox, anyway and was planned for Melee before Falco. Falco is really only popular in Smash Bros. due to his high tier.

Granted, if they make Falco even more original, that would likely rectify the problem. It all depends. Wolf is just easier to make more original than Falco is, and they'd have to completely change Falco to not make him redundant.

EDIT: Again, Toon Link isn't completely redundant because at least he has a different height and build than all the other clones. Falco doesn't even have that. If they're considered cutting Lucas, who is more original than Falco, that says a lot. And they were even considering cutting Ness, which throws the seniority argument completely out of the picture.

Falco's more popular, both with Starfox vets and with the competitive scene, but Wolf's much less of a clone. It's not an obvious decision which one would return either way, but if it's about preserving unique assets I'd say Wolf has a bigger chance of coming back and getting some new specials to make him into a completely new character.

Wolf also has a whole mode to himself in the upcoming Star Fox game...

But I don't see why either of them would have to be cut.
It's not the same situation as Lucas, where he was only in a single, Japan-exclusive game.

Perhaps Falco is more popular now, but prior to Melee it was actually Wolf. Falco probably became more popular due to his high tier in Melee, which doesn't say much. And again, they're even considering cutting Ness, which throws the seniority argument out of the picture.

Wolf has a whole mode to himself? I've never heard this before... Did Miyamoto mention that? Interesting...

Personally, if they're cutting any veterans, it should be Jigglypuff. She has absolutely no relevance anymore, whereas Ness still does.

See, I agree with this notion as well. Granted, she is kinda relevant, she still appears. But she doesn't appear in the anime and movies anymore and has lost most of her popularity. She was never really all that popular in Smash Bros., either, being merely a niche character. Bringing Mewtwo back and making him good would be far better than bringing Jiggly back. Although I doubt they'd outright cut Jiggly; they might give her a very low priority and if she doesn't make it, put her up as DLC instead for only the people that actually want her.

Yeah but Link is much more than -just- a Swordsman. He uses a variety of tools and items which further round out his moveset. You can't say the same for Fire Emblem lords, who have a much more limited pool of unique options to draw from by design.

Chrom is no doubt going to have a unique moveset, but what is going to be his IDENTITY? Fast swordsman? Medium speed trickster? Heavy hitter? Duellist? As a character, he has no inherent niche he fills, unlike Link, who can be summarised as "Sword and Shield user who also uses a variety of weapons and items"

Marth is "A quick, skilled swordsman who wields a thin blade with one hand." Ike is "A rough but powerful swordsman who uses a great sword and carries the power of Aether"

Chrom is "An agile swordsman who wields a sword in one hand." he has no real 'catch' to his design. He doesn't have aether, he's just another quick, well-rounded FE lord with a one-handed sword. He's been shown doing acrobatic moves in FE:A trailers but that's it. Aside from the rather obvious buzz-saw attack he does when fighting Luciana and the issen-like cut-through he performs, he doesn't have much to draw from that really defines who he is.
Fencing duelist - Marth
Knight in Shining Armor - Chrom
Battlefield Brute - Ike

I'd be sad to see Jiggly go, but I wouldn't particularly mind it. Her main value is that she's a 'looks weak but is actually strong when mastered' kind of character, and those are always good for teaching new players why Smash is so fun.

That said, you can probably slap all of jigglypuff's moves on Kirby as custom options and just use similar Kirby attacks and you'd have a very similar character. He has enough moves to pretty much mimic her entire set of specials.

Ness still has relevance outside of Smash? Either way; Jigglypuff is safer than Ness according to the Gematsu leak anyways, so I suppose the point is moot.
Well, he's a main character in a historical franchise and the only one that received much of an international presence. Jigglypuff is a not even an important character in one of Nintendo's main franchises, and only enjoyed popularity because of the anime for a short time. She's not even a particularly strong or well liked Pokemon these days, doesn't have a role in any of the more recent games or anime. I don't think their importance is comparable.

The Sal leak didn't mention Jigglypuff, so we can't know that.
It did; however, mention that Ness and Lucas were plausible omissions as there was debate pertaining to which one would remain (albeit, I suppose both could potentially remain). Therefore, according to the leak, Ness is in more "danger" than Jigglypuff as there is (presumably) no troubling news for any other characters. I do agree though, we cannot objectively know if that is the case unless we were to receive an update.

I do agree that Jigglypuff is more relevant than either of them, having been retyped and getting a lot of new moves in X/Y.
Yeah but lots of Pokemon got retyped and have new moves in X/Y, including oddballs like Snubbull. This doesn't suddenly make them important Pokemon though. Wigglytuff didn't even get a mega-evolution like Mawile did and wasn't used by any important trainers throughout X/Y's story like Lucario (X/Y has an entire segment dedicated to Mega Lucario being a thing, and the anime deals with it for like 4 episodes in a row)

Jigglypuff as a Pokemon isn't anything important or special, unlike Lucario (mascot tier Pokemon with story relevance in the game/lore) and Greninja (Ash has a Froakie in the anime, final evolution of the most popular X/Y starter.)

It's just one of many Pokemon now, and hasn't had any special role in quite a while.

Mewtwo has a much larger chance of returning than Jigglypuff if we're going by X/Y. It got TWO mega evolutions, being the only Pokemon other than Charizard to share that honor, and played a small role in the postgame story, and also starred in a recent movie.

I agree. But once again, I don't see why either of them need to be cut.

I always thought Jigglypuff was one of the most at risk characters to get cut, and that her "ORIGINAL 12!" status meant **** (don't know why people keep insisting "ORIGINAL 12!" is completely safe to always come back regardless of the character's current status, when Ness has been repeatedly in danger of being cut). With the aforementioned significantly diminished popularity/relevance compared to other pokemon and other Smash characters, being from the most represented franchise, and after her horrendous showing in Brawl, I would imagine that she would be among the least prioritised characters to add to the game. With that said, she would be such an easy and simple character to add, so I see it's still likely she returns.

As for the Gematsu leak not implicating her in anything, I wouldn't take that as meaning she's safer than Ness, as the leaker hasn't stated he told us everything regarding newcomers and veteran cuts.

Now that I think about it, she WAS one of the least prioritized characters in Brawl, along with Toon Link and Wolf.

So who knows.

Who is Yulia's Score?

NEVERMIND. GOOGLE IS MY FRIEND.

-feels like an idiot-
Lol, only people who have actually played the game would understand what it is. Luckily I played it. :D

Anyway, I still don't think Gematsu is "it." But we'll see how things play out.

Let's be honest. Mewtwo has almost nothing going for him besides being promoted a little in X and Y and the recent movie. He didn't even have an important part in the game, which is arguably more important. His support is running off of fan support and almost nothing else. So people need to calm down about him getting in over jiggs, it's not gonna happen.

All this talk about a Mother character getting cut.... I thought we already established that the Ness/Lucas partof the leak was most likely false....

No we haven't? We've thought of reasons why it could go either way, but that's just speculation.

He got the Mii Fighters name perfectly right, which is not something you can even really guess. Wii Fit Trainer is a very very unlikely guess, but not outright impossible. Mii Fighters is, because, notably, this is their first official appearance in Smash. They even have the SSB Universe symbol. We have a good feeling about DLC in itself, as Nintendo has been using it often, and Sakurai did say he might look at it(which is notable enough on its own).

Uh oh, here comes Smashchu
Hey, guys.

Funny that this page is talking about a new e-mail, because that's exactly why I'm here. Received one last night, but missed it in the mix of all this crazy E3 coverae.

But there's not much new about it, so I didn't think it was worth posting on the site.

I'll leave what it says here, though, in case you guys can use it in any way.

Basically, I was told that:

- Last E3 before game's launch (obviously)
- Participating characters: Pac-Man, Mii Fighter, Goddess Palutena, Shulk, Chrom, Chorus Men (none of these are new, obv, so I take he means these are the participating characters for E3?)
- There has been internal debate about keeping Lucas versus Ness, apparently Lucas is likely to get the cut
- Nintendo is planning post-launch character DLC, source doesn't like this as he thinks it's greedy

And that's it. This E3 should make or break whether this guy's the real deal. Let's hope for the best! =)
There is two big things that don't make a lot of sense

First, why are they debating Lucas verse Ness now? Yeah, it says "has" but you'd think that they would come to a decision by know and it would be articulated in the e-mail what the verdict was. This late in development, all the characters would be decided
Second, Sakurai confirmed that he chose Greninja before the X and Y were released. The e-mail in April said "Pokemon from X/Y." Wouldn't he know by that point who the Pokemon was. It was decided long ago.

Believe what you all want. I'm just throwing it out there. As an aside, I'd don't think cuts would matter if they are actually doing DLC. They could just bring back characters at a later date.

No. See where you're wrong is:

1. Falco will never be irrelevant.
2. Custom movesets should be looked at as the long awaited justification for keeping clones.

It allows for us to keep fan favorites like Falco, Ganondorf and Lucas, but for us to diversify them from similar characters on our own. My Falco can be different from the next Falco, and both of them can be different from Fox. We get to keep all of our All Stars intact this way and hopefully people will stop complaining about a diverse cast. With the current cast we already have at least 30 unique movesets. Falco won't make that any less impressive.

Take your Falco beef to the "Them's Fightin' Words" thread. I don't see what cutting clones has anything to do with the "Almighty Sal" anyway.

Little Mac
- Last appearance: 2009
- Was an AT in Brawl
- Popular in US only

Mewtwo
- Last appearance: 2013
- Was planned in N64 as playable
- Was playable in Melee
- Was planned for Brawl as playable
- Popular in US AND Japan

Mewtwo has more going for him then Little Mac did, so I would say he still has a pretty good shot.

Oh, and for those saying Jiggz should be cut, I think she and Lucario should share close to the same status. They both are FORMER mascots to Pokemon, and heck Jiggs I think is more known then Lucario is honestly. So yeah Jiggs should stay if Lucario does. She's done more for Pokemon then Lucario has and ever will.

And Pokemon can have six "slots" Mewtwo and Jiggs will probably both get in.

In regards to "oh he got Mii Fighter!" well he said "Lady Palutena" which isn't her exact name. So those two points cancel out. Plus why would he get that new info right before E3 but also have really OLD info about Lucas vs Ness? That doesn't make sense...

And we've tried arguing that rationalization to (seemingly) deaf ears despite the fact there is very clear and fortuitous reasoning as to why things were told the way they were.
