A rare moment of ranting, although i think this is well-deserved:

"social networking"

anyone else sick of hearing this term?

also

"Iphone"
"iPad" although this is the only fitting name for something as gay as all the new bull**** going on. Gee i'm on my iPeriod, i guess ill just use an iPad.

"Smart Phone"
"facebook", ****ing hell, did you really need a movie mark zucher****stein?
"twitter", most redundtant/useless thing in the world. also in this category "tweeet" "facebook status" etc.

America has succumb to be the face palm of the world. Where here we have Japanese and germans inventing and discovering ****, schools failing. etc.

Sad thing is the range is kids to adults who use this ****. So much time commutatively wasted on this ****, and everyone seems to be jumping on board.

Also "web 2.0", this is for technologically challenged people who think that they need to categorize something that they have no knowledge about, so why not make a new name for it.

the mass quantity of technological idiots flooding the internet, and trashing it.

tl;dr I hate people who are casualizing the internet.

I've been making this same rant for so long.

Humanity (it's hardly just our own culture) has faded into the ether due to the very same devices which were meant to keep us in touch. Sure we can 'hook up' online and let the twits hit the fan, but it's become the perfect excuse for offloading all of our stupid bull**** into the internet and has also served to make us all more passive aggressive as we forsake actual personal encounters for the safe, comfortable, inhuman interface of the world wide web.

Fight the power, Taki. Let the world know that our vitality isn't sustained by the internet.

And on that note, back to WoW.

The internet can both be used frivolously AND meaningfully. To quote Shakespeare, "there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." There are shades of gray to ALL of these new forms of technology and new ways of using existing technology. I find facebook.com to be an excellent way to catch up with old friends, ones who have moved away, or simply ones that I have lost contact with. The same is true for WoW and smashboards.com... currently my best ways to keep in contact with my friends in the US ("Hi guys!").

I fail to see how this message board is so different from all of the things that Taki just went on a rant about. Other people would likely view our online community with the same disdain that you just voiced for twitter users. Once again, it boils down to perception. I will admit, it is difficult for me, too, to look at these issues with a clearly objective eye. My lens is that of an English teacher. I see all these new forms of communication in a different way then most people. It is because of these networking tools that MORE PEOPLE ARE WRITING THAN AT ANY OTHER TIME IN HUMAN HISTORY. We all prove this every single time we make a post. The world's wealth of information is growing faster and is being shared more widely for this reason. Yes, some of the information out there on the internet is terrible... but, like in everything else, we take the good with the bad.

You can take my argument or leave it. I am not exactly making the case that all of these changes in technology and the internet are beneficial. Rather, I believe that it is important to look at these issues in a more liberal fashion. The elitist mentality leads to unnecessary anger and misplaced hate... look no further than Fox News for a perfect example.

Now that I think about it, we all initially harbored these feelings towards Brawl. We tried to fight it. It took us nearly a year to realize that the issue was not worth our time. We simply rejected Brawl and played Melee. If you despise twitter and company so much, you are well within your right to ignore them.

Facebook counts.

If you use it to meet people, then lol.

I don't need Libro de Caras to find women.

I need to get a job over the summer. The engineering program here pushes really hard into doing a cooperative education with a company, which sounds pretty cool, but I'm thinking of applying for an internship in game design. Anyone here have any experiences doing internships? The only problem I can think of right now is I doubt I'd get a paycheck, kind of ruining the whole job thing :(

I plan on going to /Hope2 for shiz and gigs. Does anyone need/want a ride with me. I will obviously be riding Alan if he needs one and also Rob if he wants in. So those guys get priority. So with them that leaves 2 seats open. I know its a close tournament, but I am also aware that some of you live on a campus with no car or typically mindgame money off of elderly women in order to use public transportation, so I figure I'd offer.

Some pay, some don't.

I'm required to get an internship to graduate, and it has to be related to my major(IT).

I'm putting in to work at UPMC IT over the summer; we will see if that's successful.

Internship experience trumps the fact that you won't be getting a pay check. That and if you look only for the ones that pay you won't find many, if any at all. And those you might find will be the harder than they should to get into simply because they pay.

So just find a good internship, and apply. Don't worry about money or nonsense like that because it'll play off in the long run.

I'm not complaining about the terribleness of the internet as much as how much its been whored out by fb, twitter, apple, etc... most of these "internet apps" have are either redundant forms of communication, or just a copycat that got all the notoriety and wealth.

So i think you're missing my point.

Are you saying we should just all convert back to myspace?

I think I'm going invent Mybook or Facespace, so Logan I have an internship spot available for you programming my pioneer website. It's going to completely keep the way we mindlessly communicate over the internet the same, but with a cuter interface to cater to all the mindless robot carbon copy women who will use it frequently enough that the adspace on the side bars will make me millions.

Step 2:

Step 3: Get rich as fizzuck and make a movie that has me sleeping with Megan Fox. Tell me that shiz won't be ten times better than anything about that nard that invented facebook. That'd be like making a movie about how Bill Gates came up with Microsoft...it should be 2 hours of him sitting in a dark basement programming on C until 4am when he finally faps and falls asleep, only to wake-up and repeat the next day until he gets rich (at which point the movie could transition into a rap music video with money flying everywhere and voluptious women shaking there butts for the remainder of the time). Which would be just like making a movie about Alan, except without the getting rich part.

And my post has successfully come full circle back to trolling Alan.

Life is gr8.

This post just made my day.

And no. Myspace was the sewers of the internet, creepazoids, camwhores, drunk bros, and guidos used it. Now FB comes in (which the only reason it ever got popular was because it was exclusively for college folk), and suddenly its the greatest thing ever, now 6 year olds have facebook and are camwhoring it up too.

The problem with the money is I'd like to have some available to like, do stuff. Like going to tournaments or playing WoW, I don't have any actual income to support them. And I don't wanna take any from my family since my mom already has financial troubles buying food each week lol (makes me sound homeless or something, I'm not, don't worry :p)

But yeah, I'm gonna look around. Anyone know any game companies near Pittsburgh? I don't meet Blizzard's requirements for an internship, I do for Riot Games (barely) but both are located in California anyways xD

Have you guys actually seen the Facebook movie yet? I have, and I can guarantee it's probably not what you think. Just fyi, it was directed by David Fincher (Fight Club, Benjamin Button, and others), with music by Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), and screenplay/scripting done by Aaron Sorkin (A Few Good Men). If you think it's a film glorifying the life and work of one Mark Zuckerberg, you're way off.

Well let me illustrate this.
While Fincher Sorkin and Reznor are all reputable people to bring to the table in producing said film, Catfish is becoming more and more widely considered the "REAL" facebook movie, comparatively speaking to The Social Network. I would suggest indulging in Catfish, 'twas very enjoyable. It focus's on a single user and his communication with a family with facebook as the medium to do so, has a huge huge HUGE twist at the end, and is a very well produced film *for its budget*.

I'm just merely making the statement that Mark Zuckerberg's life is probably not even close to what is depicted in the movie, considering he probably spent countless hours programming Facebook which I doubt makes for good entertainment hence my previous hyperbolic story. Which actually in some sense is a parody of the prospected movie about social networking, which in itself is a pathetic idea for a cinema and truly tells the situation of our society. When a group of people call a pretend biography about a real person "entertainment", there is something truly skewed about their perception of entertainment in my own opinion. And yes, this is a PRETEND biography as Mark Zuckerberg has already made the statement that the movie is mostly fictional.

As an aside, yes I do use Facebook, but for all the same reasons Rob listed. I also see the value in such a network, or any medium for that matter that asks people to write (albeit mostly grammatically insensitive, but some may argue that my own formal writings show similar in-sensitivities) because writing entails an expression of thought or emotion which is ALWAYS gratifying to the intellect of the person (I capitalize ALWAYS because there is no legitimate argument that can say otherwise). And yes, the school system is at the point where it would make me happy to know that my students are thinking critically about something, even if it is a Eminem lyric that they posted as there Facebook status because they feel it relates to there life.

So if you asked me if social networking and the internet are *******izing there initial purpose, I would say yes, but with the addendum that for all the worth that these two mediums offer to society I can justify there existence in spite of the fact that there initial use and purpose has been lost to most.

I heard it sucked, and nothing can really make me go see that piece of garbage. Even if it was good, the mere fact that it is about the creation and **** happening because of facebook would instantly make me not take it seriously.

I'll wait for the scary movie rip off of it called "FaceBewk"

I resonate with your post, Taki. Everytime someone mentions Twitter on the news, I want to Falcon Punch my television set. And the Facebook movie looks like a great big circle jerk among internet n00bz. I'm with Thomas, "Catfish" looks good.

Facebook sucks *** now. They can't keep the same layout or privacy policy for more than 2 months.

To be fair, the Facebook layout changes have generally been improvements to what was there before. I think they're still trying to work out how to best deal with privacy issues, which is why we're seeing all these changes on that front. Though I think the current incarnation of the privacy settings is better than it's been in the past.

taki makes a point that has been floating before facebook and even long before the likes of myspace. I am not an "original" user of the internets for I caught on late, but the point he drives is one that holds much more significance than the internet "gurus" back then probly anticipated.

I dunno how to help ppl understand I do feel like I see exactly where taki is coming from. I use facebook SOLELY because of the fact that its large and kind of common ground with like everyone. I consider myself sucked into it. dun get me wrong, im not one if those ppl who goto libraries and talk with their stagnant friends and professors about how computers/internet suck. There is a bigger picture that I am sure tat taki will agree upon in regards to the internet and just the bringing up of society today, but I guess thats a rant for another time.

edit:

<3 taki

There is some practicality with facebook and social networking, but comparatively speaking..... its a shame that its such a commercial thing and that the amount of trash filtered in is significant enough for me to have great concerns about the generations to come. At heart I am an extremeist and a part of me wishes that things would go back to the times of IRC / DC++ and when internet was not accessible to 12yr old Alice who wants a IPHONE for her birthday. Seeing what the internet in general has done to the youth is what will always make me an extremeist in the direction of the "golden age" of the internet(even though I really wasnt around)

I guess mankind will figure something out

So, everyone proved my point that they haven't seen the movie.

Anyone who had seen the movie would have realized that it isn't a biography at all. It's merely a depiction of how current social standards and the "depersonalized" lives we all live, (through mediums like the internet) force people who want to be successful to become ***holes. The whole point behind listing the main people behind the movie was to prove that it wasn't about Zuckerberg. Those people couldn't give a **** about him or his life's story. Trent even said that he thought a movie about facebook was the gayest thing he's ever heard, but Fincher showed him what it was really about, and he readily agreed. It's social commentary. By the end of the film, the man who has millions of "friends" and billions of dollars via facebook is sitting at his computer, hitting f5 over and over, desperately hoping that the one person who was truly nice to him (who he ****ed up with) will accept his friend request. The irony is that, even if she does, he still won't have anyone who cares.

Blame the parents who left their children absent-minded enough to be vulnerable to the blatant stupidities of the internet, imo.

Things like the modern Facebook have flourished because of the great demand amongst our people for a place to be as loud and obnoxious as possible, spewing their meaningless bull**** in as many directions as they can muster, and then passing off this impersonal ether-rant as some gratifying social experience. But the demand for this only exists because it's something that people have grown to want, have grown to feel accustom to, and parents are supposed to be the instruments towards the direction of that growth.

Warn and inform Alice of what she will confront on the big bad interwebs, or don't let her on them at all. She won't grow to be a braindead, passive-aggressive, networking zombie and it'll improve the online experience for all of us.

Again, I should know. I play WoW.

Get a job... anywhere. ALL companies are going to look at previous job experience... even if it is just at your campus bookstore. EVERY potential employer wants to know that YOU will be a reliable, hard worker. The best way to show this is to have SOME experience as a working man. In interviews, you WILL be asked about you have handled certain situations in previous jobs. If you cannot answer this question because you have not held a job before, you will be in serious trouble.

PS - I made close to $80 a day just working as a customer service associate at Lowe's... which would be enough to play WoW for half of a year. I'm sure that you could make a similar amount if you just work weekends at some place in Oakland.
