You don't need to be from America to have a poltical stand-point or a view on an issue. The debates can be centered on a wide range of international issues including the War on Terrorism, U.S. Torture Facilaties in other countries, Abortion, Gay Marriage, etc. etc.

Really, we are just debating general things that the Presidential Candidates are also debating.

But it is hard to believe a non-American that isn't involved in American politics to win a debate like that. American reasons for immigration control are different from others. We shouldn't have to ask people to read up on massive and complex issues that don't concern/interest them in order to debate.

Eh... I guess you're right.

Like I said, I haven't really thought it completely through. I just wanted to toss it out there as an idea before I plan it out so I don't waste my time with the planning if the idea is rejected.

But even I am not active in politics and don't care about them since I don't have a voice in government yet (I can't vote) so I would be doing just as much research... Either way, someone will ALWAYS be more passionate about an issue than another person regardless of what the issue is.

It's up to you guys on whether or not to use the idea, I just tossed it out there.

Then isn't that exactly the same as what we usually do?

I would love to be involved in some "presidential debate." I don't know too much about the candidates, or their policies, but I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to research. Plus political debates need structure, because they always end up with someone flamming someone else. A fight usually ensues, or people just agree to disagree.

I need a clarification for one-line posts. Are the allowed, then? And just to throw in feedback, I find it possible that a member would get Debate Hall access for a week and spam/troll in a controversial thread. This happened in a PRoom thread on George Bush once, I think.

EDIT: Thank you for the clarification.

One liners are quite forbidden. Under no circumstances are they acceptable posts.

Can we have debates dealing with social relationships?

Like how to approach the opposite sex, being male or female. How to handle an early relationship, and the whole deal?

If you can pull it off using outside evidence, yes. If you are posting your opinions, it needs to be in an editorial form and a good length stating your ideas. If it's a rant, make sure to put like "Rant: My topic"

Question: How would you go about banning members from this room? Of course there is the issue of stupid and arrogant posters so obviously they would be banned but in the situation of an intelligent member who posted well but didn't follow the criteria needed to become a full-fledged member.

Would they simply be denied full membership and still have the ability to post to try again or would they be banned? And if they are allowed to keep posting, what difference is there between a regular member and a full member? Likewise, if they are denied access, is this a truly fair procedure?

Sorry if my question is stupid or doesn't make sense.

Edit: Thanks for the clarification.

If someone fails to fill out the prerequisite list, they will not make it to the voting round and considered a failure. If they are considered a failure, they can be added into the next wave, but if they fail that (by lack of votes or failure to do the criteria) they are barred for a month from trying out.

I must say, after just a few days of using this system, we're already starting to become more active, I haven't posted in this many threads in a long time, we have at least 5 active threads, very impressive.

The Lack of activity is disturbing.....

Is there anyway we can get an announcement about joining the Debate Hall. I maybe missed it, but I never saw one at the top of the main screen. People don't know that we have changed how to get in. I'd like to see activity!

Yea, during my weekend vacation, Evil Eye was supposed to allow that weeks worth of people. He forgot, and since then I've been quite busy. I suggest EVERYONE don't PM HIM UNTIL HE GETS ON THAT. Just saying is all...

I did not send a private message to EE saying this:

make the announcement about the debate hall said:
laskhfa;lhfasl;kghpioqwurqpoweryiyptqtyireutiyqrio qrqwrewrweuiryquiory
I'm also not assuming that a dozen people will send him something much more intelligent.

Yeah, I got caught up in last minute appointments. But...

1) What is Skywalker asking me to do? "That announcement" is more than a bit vague.

2) Eric said he didn't want to do admissions for a while, for whatever reason.

I thought by me saying I didn't want to do it for awhile, I meant you do it for a while. Just until I can get started with school because I will be busy for a bit to activate the newer members. I might not have been clear enough with that one, my bad.

Hey guys, I'm having a problem here. The thing is that I was accepted as a DWYP member, I made some post throughout my week (about one or two weeks ago), everything was ok, and them BAAM!! lost my connection. I haven't been able to get on the site for quite a while to finish my post and make my thread and whatever, and I was thinking, can I finish what I started (make a thread and one or two more post) or did I lost my chance to be a debater?. I know I'm late for that but if CK or EE can give me an answer to this problem, I'll appreciate it.

I'm sure you'll get an exception. But what do I know, I've been a temp debater for almost 2 months I think. Kind of my fault for being an idiot when i first joined though.

Thanks to school, I basically have 13 hour days where when I get home I am too tired for anything. Though since it's Labor Day weekend (bloody socialists) I'll do all admissions this weekend. Yes, people who were added during my absence might be revoked. Yes, if I do remove you, you still have another shot later. And yes, I will tell you how to improve.

I am looking to begin work on it tonight, and finish by tomorrow night. It'll be late, as I have a wedding reception to attend.

Temp Debaters removed. I'll be evaluating those who actually sign-in to that topic.

Just to update: I've been busy with school and work. So if you've been messaging me on AIM and I've either been unavailable or short on responses, that's why.

Secondly, the next round of admissions will be Thanksgiving Week (Nov. 19-23). Until then, that's all I got.

Yea, screw my original plan. I am adding everyone who applied to either the Debate Hall or the Temp Debate Hall. I'll be doing this once a month. It dawned on me that my method was too complicated since I can still remove people at whim.

Oh no! I read all the rules again and again since I applied  Your original plan was fine to me, but I can say that allowing everyone helps to create good debates. Thumbs up for that.

BTW, we have to do the same process? (Check in/out list, 6 posts, a thread, etc.?) I hope! Because It's a good method to keep in touch with replies.

Now, it's more of, I look at everyone who is in the Temp group. If you weren't a complete ******* and posted often, you'll be invited to come in. Though, now that you mention it, next time I'll make it so all temp debaters have to sign-in. It's too late now since I sent out the PM, but that's a great idea.

Exactly, while temp debater you can know people before making him able to post as a debater. Like everything there are pros and cons in admitting everyone at once. Pros: A lot of people would help to make a good debate and everyone can share opinions, Cons: you can't guarantee he/she won't insult, flame, Spam, etc. But It's obvious that kind of things are everywhere.

Anyway, I think the ones who end as members in the debaters group are the ones who didn't insult, flame, Spam, etc. and they can be recognized applying any method, as the old one or the "new" one.

After thinking about both this DBH and the old, non-exclusive on, I'm starting to get nostalgic.

Is it possible to have it that everyone has access to the room, but can get kicked out? Just because I still think the way we have it narrows down the topic, to where we usually have one active topic at a time, with two or so other ones with some activity, then we switch. Really, I'm enjoying the debates in the pool room more then here right now, because those are more open to everyone. If one person doesn't answer my question, someone else will probably answer it. While here, it's mainly Delorted or Snex debating, with a few extra people wandering around.

I agree, and have felt that way for a while now, although I didn't really feel like coming out and voicing it.

Although we seem to have lost a really strong and/or interesting debaters from the old DH (BBT, RDT, Novowels, etc.) I still feel like the Debate Hall could be at least partially revitalized by making it more open. A group membership in which everyone is in by default and only kicked out after they make problems would accomplish this magnificently, in my opinion.

What if we combined both worlds of it.

For a period of time, maybe like a 2-4 weeks, we open up the debate hall to everyone, they just come in and post what they want. Those who make intelligent posts, or show some intelligence get to stay, the other ones lose their chance, and can only come back when we open it up again.

I understand that the pool room debates are alright, but if we open up the DH fully again. I fear the worse. Just look at the Brawl rooms, imagine if alot of those guys came here to debate. There would be a lot of kicking out, and it would just become the same DH.

I agree that we don't want everyone from the Brawl rooms coming in here to debate, but that's okay, because most of them don't want to.

The number of people debating in the Debate Hall was never unmanageable. It's just that we never had a system to manage it before. Now that we have our own group membership, it would be fairly easy to deal with, I think.

Yeah, if the DH is open to everyone some wouldn't come, particularly because most members only want to post in the Brawl's rooms (and it's ok, 'cause this Forum is a Smash community).

But what I can see in the DH, is the lack of Spam threads or annoying posts, something that will be lost if this room is open to everyone in the future.

I'm not opening the Debate Hall. The newer-est way I am doing admissions is basically anyone who applies for temp status gets in for a month. They are good and don't act stupid, they get invited back, they are spam and ruin the room, they are banned from the room and warned.

I refuse to unlock the room. The Proom "debates" are ridiculous and based on nothing most of the time.

I remember old topics had Debate Hallers getting to decide who they like, though. I still think that should be taken into consideration. That's just my spindly, temp-debater opinion though...

To reduce the workload for you, maybe you could uh.... like, give everybody you let in a "Wave Number" (ie: Wave #1) and add that to the temp debater check-in template? So like, under my religious affiliation or what have you, I'd also have "Wave Number - 4" or something like that. Then you could just post a topic saying "Wave 4, who do you like/hate?" and hopefully everybody would go read the check-in topic and say Decoy Octopus to the former because that would make him a very happy tentaclular being.

*continues to ponder that last post*
