I see mainstream "music" as so empty of any sort of meaning that people must be listening to it in order to stop thinking. "Listeners" minds fill with such noise they can't even hear their own thoughts. "Artists" turn up the bass beat until it becomes overpowering, lightly pounding against you until you decide to dance with it. Drivers turn up their radios and the stupidity spreads like a ****ING disease, one that puts you in a blissful comatose so you can continue to delude yourself and deny reality and truths of life.
yikes. I'm sorry man.

I just got a last.fm dealie a few days ago. I've recently set out on a search for more modern artists to follow since the vast majority of what I listen to is 25+ years old, but so far I haven't found much that I like. I'd be much obliged for recommendations from sufficiently cool kids.

Oh right, that would be helpful info, where are my manners?
As far as bands that exist and put out albums right now, very very few. Wolfmother, They Might Be Giants, uh...I think that's about it =/
My favorite bands include Steely Dan, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Santana, Yes, King Crimson, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, etc.

Derek: Both of those were fairly good.

EDIT: Also I might as well post stuff that I've looked into and don't like:
Radiohead
Daft Punk
Dave Matthews
Dream Theater
Modest Mouse
The Killers

i always thought it was dumb that all of these "reccomend me music based on my tastes" websites only stick to the same era of music

i guess it can't be helped though

i think you can probably figure out why it works that way [this comes off way more mean then it is intended]

when you cross eras the musical landscape changes

ive been trying to word a post explaining this clearly for like 5 minutes
but i think you get the gist.

i think it's more because they way it tells similarity in music is by the tags people give it + what people listen to alongside it

which means all of them are tagged "classic rock" and all the people that listen to classic rock listen to more classic rock

its a vicious cycle

edit: but yeah i see what youre saying also

but there are some classic rocks bands that sound a hell of a lot like modern bands (queen and electric light orchestra come to mind)

Yeah that's basically the problem I have been having trying to find new stuff through last.fm etc.; it's not really telling me much I don't already know.

Plants and Animals. It's alright, but not really what I'm looking for, but that's the story with a lot of indie music for me. I can tolerate it fine but nothing has really made much of an impression on me. It's hard to articulate exactly why that is though, I dunno, it kind of seems like most of the blues and jazz is gone from rock these days which is the kind of stuff I tend to go for. I mean, I suppose really I should think of this as looking for something entirely new as opposed to looking for a new band that plays in the classic rock style, but I can only go with what I know so far.

I love ELO, I don't think they sound that modern though. Fire on High is one of my favorite songs ever.

Unrelated to this discussion, I think this is really good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vM_QKP4Q0s
Apparently this band did the music for the anime Cromartie High School. It sounds very King Crimson-esque.

i gotcha hyuga.

for me, i was the sort of guy who'd only listen to that kind of stuff too (i was really in love with jethro tull for the longest time)

then for some reason i don't remember, i heard of montreal and absolutely loved it, and it was a completely different kind of music i had never heard of or given the time of day and it opened me to a bunch of music i didn't even know existed. if you love what you listen to, there's no need to "open your mind" to different music unless you feel the need to (or happen to stumble upon by happenstance <3)

Hmm, I kind of disagree. I mean yeah there's no -need- to if you're satisfied with what you have, and you shouldn't force yourself to like something for the sake of being able to say you have eclectic and diverse tastes, but you have to explore and push your limits sometimes, and there is stuff you might like later that you didn't the first few times you heard it. It's like, the more I learn about music the more I realize how little I know. For a long time I was convinced I didn't like the Grateful Dead because I didn't like the songs they played on the radio. Then for no reason I decided to just check out random junk on youtube. One thing led to another and now I think they are amazing, they just never played the amazing stuff on the radio. I've had too many experiences like this to ever stop looking for new music.

I'm a BEAST.

Faaaaackin, listen to some Bang Camaro.

While you're at it scope out some tasty treats like Yanni and Enya, too.

Add a dash of Stevie Rey Vaughan and Double Trouble plus some Stray Cats and you got yourself a full course meal.

I've got about 1000000 musics to list off but I won't. Just talk to me at a tourney and I'll give you the run down on all the good ****.

No.

You're dumb.

I find Radiohead pretty boring, it's too "ambient" sounding if that makes sense and Thom Yorke just goes oooooeeEEEEOOOOoooeeee. Yes I called it boring and I'm the kind of person that can listen to the first 3 minutes of this over and over.

Fly: I liked it, I intend to check out more.

Derek: Didn't especially care for the Minus the Bear track. Tera Melos I will have to look into more. I liked the first 2 minutes and the last minute, it reminds me a lot of Yes. The middle I'm not sure about, but I can see it possibly growing on me. The other Tera Melos song rudeezy posted is pretty OK too.

Nintendoking has like a 90% success rate for recommending me music. I might suggest that y'alls Get At Him.
