I think Olimar's gameplay has advanced enough for us to be able to decide or at least debate the most effective way to play Olimar. Should we be offensive, perhaps defensive or campy? Is there even a "most effective" way to play Olimar? Well have at it, what is the most effective way to play Olimar? Please be supportive in whichever method you decide to choose.

Campy. He is a such camper. Best D char in the game hands down.
Idk. I don't have experience against wario, but doesn't he have some kind of ridiculous camping strategy? Anyway, I think things like offensive and defensive are generally more matchup based than overall observations, but I guess camping as a means of pressuring your opponent that leads to defensive play is pretty effective. I don't know, it's such a vague and difficult topic to analyze.

Pretty much every character in Brawl is better defensively than offensively. (stupid shield)

I always play campy, as the battle progresses the enemy becomes more hostile, then more opening begin to appear for grabs and the occasional down or up smash, but many characters are more defensive, the only time camping fails me is when I vs Falco or Marth. BUt patience is one of the many keys to victory. March on my fellow pikmin victory shall be upon us

It just depends on the matchup. Someone like Rob I usually play all out offensive, whereas someone like weegee you would probably want to play more defensively. In general though, I feel he plays more effectively offensive, but it can really change depending on your opponent.

I agree with Olimarman, an effective Oli is one who can space properly and knows the strengths and limitations of what Pikmin he has at any given moment. For example, a good Oli will NEVER try and smash with a White Pikmin...haha, anyway. Olimar is so versatile it depends heavily on your match up. Personally I am an offensive Oli. I use the pikmin throw to get quick damage and capsize on the very instent my opponent trys to swat my little army off. If they dont do it fast enough, I can Dthrow -> Fair for some good damage. Then it all depends on spacing.(Again)

Defensive

Pikmin toss is one of the most damaging projectile in the game, olimar's grab&smashes outrange 90% of the cast and have amazing IASA frames, and Olimar can juggle very well with usmash uair and pivot grabs.

White pikmin fsmash to grab is a good set-up ;)
Other than silly stuff like that... white pikmin are weak >>

~Fino
The only time I use WHite Pikmin to smash is for spacing and for Mindgames. Imagine this. Your Mario, you have 123% damage, and Olimar has just done a Fsmash..To your surprise...You only got nudged....

Ah well, thanks for that. Im gonna have to try it out. :)

usually if I use a white pikmin for a smash its usually a mistake but thanks for that trick fino I really must try it out, I may be able to kill slasherx marth, also anyone else win just becuase the pikmin whip grabbed the edge first before your opponent did I've won like 20 times because of the fast pikmin whip.

Most of the time I get off the stage, I stay off. I usually play DeDeDe's and MK's. Which can really **** Olimar if they catch him off the stage. The best I can do is Go for a quick Fair into Airdodge before Pikmin Chaining onto the ledge. Of course if Im spiked, I am screwed. This is why Olimar must not get off teh stage!

agreed@matchup based, you gotta mix it up, i mean, standing away from a space animal or Pit (or Ness *hi fino*) just throwing pikmin at them is not going to get you anywhere XD

"most effective" is relative... i mean, good luck playing super defensive against a meta knight on norfair, ya know? flip the coin and your doing dash grabs at a marth on FD. :/

You get gimped a lot? You gotta' work on that brah'. Seriously. =/ Try Whistling a lot more. It's fine to Whistle Spike Marth after he tries to Spike you. It'll make you laugh and you can replay it when you're down.

Ok... I am not saying to never use a aggressive move but for the most part he is a huge camper.
Oh my ****ing god! It's NOT camping, it's "waiting around" while throwing Pikmin. Lol.

i camp aggressively :]

i try to lead everything into a combo >.>
but it works :D
I agree with you here. I think Olimar is best played offensive-defensively. I know people are going to be like "WTFx they have that now", well yes, they do. If you play in a way that turns your offensive position into an uphill battle for your opponent, you can be on the offensive while still being on the defensive. Take Marth for example, while he's SHDFair you're not going to be attacking him because his offensive stance has created the best possible defense for him. I really think Olimar should be played in much the same way.

only characters that I'm forced to approach is ROB, Falco, and meteknight but hey its meteknight, he charges at me. I start off in the begging as full defense, as the battle time increases I slowly shift to offense, I have patience I fought through a 10 min match with a ness. I camped like hell:mad:

my game is agressive

i always starts the fight with grab combos

and i campy when i need! using the side B, and rage and pivots grabs
and i dont use Upsmash, only to kill, sometimes i use in a combo or other

and is working for me, i won 3 tournaments, and alots of second places, aind always top5

but i have to agree, campy olimar is boring to play against, but is not hard

my opinion

thats it, and sorry about my bad english

I don't get gimped a LOT. Just when I play MKs and DeDeDe's. So, whistle the spike? I usually only whistle when Im coming down after being vertically smashed. (Wow, Im making my Olimar out ot be horrid, arent I? For the record, Ive one many tourneys as Olimar. :))

This thread is kind of silly... It's impossible to pick one style that can be considered -best- because different styles are going to be required for every match-up. Though, I guess by that token one could say the best style would be a style that "Reads the opponent and plays accordingly," but that's kind of obvious...right?

This is one misconception I've been meaning to discuss for a while. White pikmin are bad to KILL with, not smash. If you need a bit of space and you have a white next, go for it. While not as effective as others, they can set up for combos also. I usually just toss them, but its not like your an awful Olimar if you smash with them.

I like the extra range... if they are already at KO damage then I will forward smash for some room.

Exactly what tools does Oli have to be aggressive in singles?
wut
besides the awesome grab and smash range that both set up ridiculous combos, or maybe the great aerials that are all disjointed with good range, or maybe the best pressuring projectile in the game allowing for an easy opening to set up said combos??

definitely no tools to be aggressive
definitely none
definitely

Olimar has no offensive tools at all! Out of the question! You're right!

(:

Just because Olimar camps well doesn't mean he's not a great offensive character.
