I don't know what to think right now...
Ryck, the guy in green who runs Friday Night Fights at Dibbz, and the Dibbz owner, Kevin, have basically decided that Friday Night Fights, starting sometime in either December or January, will include Brawl. This would, in fact, eliminate a Saturday Smash Bros tournament entirely.
What Ryck told me: It's good for our community and possibly adds more people to it. A good number of people that play smash play marvel for the most part ("the guys that come from Houma all the time"). Dibbz gets most of their money on these Friday nights, as well as Saturday. Each week, there'd probably be a different tourney (SFIV, MvC3, Brawl/Melee, etc.). There would still be the $2 venue fee (w/armband), and $5 to enter. Maybe some Dibbz/gift cards could be thrown in as prizes (not confirmed). We'd setup around 3pm, start signups at 5pm, and work from there. Ryck said he will be at NOM this Saturday, so we can all get on the same track then.
My thoughts on this: Well, he started out saying that he would like to add Smash to FNF. First thing I said: I can't do it. My Times-Picayune job, as of now, does not allow me to take off, as this is temporary, and I may be able to ask off ONLY IF they keep me after the turnaround period is over, which happens to be the end of December. Not only would I not be able to run it, I wouldn't be able TO GO PERIOD. If I ever have went to a FNF, it's been for an hour at the longest. But I digress. He told me the specifics, and I don't like it.
We've had NOM's for over a year, (we're on #15) and I personally don't see any other business Dibbz gets Saturday morning/early afternoon other than the venue fees we've always paid. The "Houma guys"? That's just Lee he knows, and for all I know, the only Smash players he "knows" are some of the older Melee and the oldest Brawl players, if that, plus Adam, me, Jio, Arcadia, and Vaughn I guess, so he has NO IDEA who's in or what our community looks like now. He doesn't understand when I told him yall are notoriously able to prolong tournies, so much that I start at 12:30. Imagine us, in a CROWDED Dibbz, setups everywhere, just like 5 or 6 setups for smash, while there's one or two other tournies playing/being set up AT THE SAME TIME. Some of yall have stuff like school/parent johns/jobs that wouldn't enable yall to get to Dibbz that early, and imagine what would parents think when you get home at 3am from a tourney thats less than an hour away. We'll get new people? Yeah, new people will feel SO comfortable dealing with not one, not two, but THREE fighting game communities they don't know jack about.
I don't like the fact that this "Kevin" has never tried to talk to me about this, as I assume that Ryck is now his lapdog. The "Dibbz guy" Arcadia and I always get in touch with is Mike, with whom Ryck never mentioned. HOWEVER, he basically ended the conversation with "well, if you can't run it, I will, cuz Kevin and I are probably going to do it anyway." That ticked me off. In typical Ryck fashion, he claimed that he wanted my input, but once his ideas are set into motion, you can't persuade him otherwise. If you disagree with him, you're an idiot/****** to him. Ask me, my bro, my roommates. I detest Ryck as a person, and you know why I don't DQ you guys? Cuz I know you all, most by a first name basis. It's all good to me, as long as it doesn't make it bad for everyone. I can see Ryck being "that guy" DQing, or even banning, you guys if you make delays. He will claim he tries to do stuff for the whole, but ITS ALWAYS ABOUT HIM.
Luckily, I just so happened to start searching for a bigger venue for BIG tournaments. Like LasT/HOBO big. But as far as NOM's go, I don't know where we go from here after the one this Saturday.
I want all of you guys' inputs on this, so I can get a view what you guys want, cuz that's all I care about. Would you like it on Friday?
tl;dr: Ryck/Kevin/Dibbz wants to add Smash to Friday Night Fights. I don't like it for the reasons stated above. What do you guys think? Ryck will be at NOM this Saturday.
EDIT: I personally do not want this to happen, but if you all, as a whole, would like this to happen, go right ahead. Just know that I won't be a part of it.
