I'm only going by what Sakurai said about Rex. Smash 4's DLC and Smash Ultimate's DLC are two different things.Corrin was also “too new” when Fates was first announced nearly four years in January 2015, two months after Smash for Wii U. And look-he became DLC.
I apologize if I sound like a jerk and if I’m twisting your words, but my point is that characters after 2016, let alone ones from yet unreleased games, can make the cut. “Too new” can mean many things.
Like you said, it's subjective. I was really pleased in 4, with 2 of my 3 most wanted (Robin and Shulk) and some other (Villager, Cloud). All subjective and opinion based. I personally felt Smash 4 had the worst newcomers out of any Smash game and Ultimate is tied with Brawl for best newcomers.
I cant stand JRPGs or 3rd parties so to me Smash 4 was a nightmare. Greninja, Shulk, Cloud, Roy, Corrin, Lucas, Lucina, Robin, Mewtwo, Charizard, Ryu, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Bayonetta (though shes more of a 2nd party character now and Ive warmed up to her over time). At the time I wasnt too big of a fan of FE I've warmed up to the series after 4 came out. Still added too many of them in 1 game though.Like you said, it's subjective. I was really pleased in 4, with 2 of my 3 most wanted (Robin and Shulk) and some other (Villager, Cloud).
Meanwhile, for me, Ultimate is disappointing. I had several wanted characters, with one of them being the remaining one I wanted in 4, and none got in: Isaac, Elma, Rex, Sora, Waluigi, Phoenix, Paper Mario. Actually, Ultimate is really lacking any newcomers for RPG fans like me (not counting Pokémon and echoes).
It's subjective.
I personally see 3 characters from Square Enix as realistic from a business point of view, the aforementioned Lara Croft, a Dragon Quest character and even though it seems unlikely given how the content is being handled it's still within the realm of possibility, a Final Fantasy character, with Noctis making the most sense purely from business point. There's a lot of talk about Square Enix characters and people seem to be pointing at Geno, Sora and a DQ rep mainly.
However I feel like people could possibly be sleeping on a very iconic character who's comes from a major video game franchise, one of which Square does currently own the rights to. That is of course Tomb Raider, and Lara Croft being the character. Although I'm not particularly sure how likely of a pick she'd be for Nintendo especially since she hasn't had much presence on any Nintendo console since Square bought the rights to Tomb Raider, but nonetheless she'd be a pretty big addition to the game and could attract new players to Smash if she was added.
Wait, what?! When?!Steve has been spotted as a Spirit.
There's a picture of it over in the Reimu support thread. Here it is:10 minutes agoWait, what?! When?!

Why is monster hunter music under fighters catergory?
And, Animal Crossing was given the same treatment in Brawl.i think assist trophies have been before
Is this for real? Because if these characters legit are not Spirits, then there are some surprising omissions, and it could definitely be evidence that they were planned already as DLC. Because there are a lot of really obscure characters as spirits, so you'd think the more popular ones would have been represented first. And even if Sakurai and his team haven't yet started development on DLC characters, it is not unreasonable for them to have decided them a long time ago.We found all the spirits now
Here’s the most particular characters not being spirits
Banjo Kazooie
Sylux
Rythmn Girl
Porky
Monster Hunter
Adeliene
Tibby
Edelgard
Cross
Travis Touchdown
Crash Bandicoot
Sora
Reimu
Hayabusa
Lloyd Irving
Steve
Style Savvy
Erdrick
Slime
Chrono
Doomguy
Dante

Saber
Bit Trip Runner
Heihachi
Jack Frost
Hey! I just wanted to give you a head's up that Heihachi is actually now in pixelated form inside of Pacman's Namco Taunt.Well, with Reggie's comment in mind and whatnot, I suppose I can just update my own preditions:
1.- Joker (confirmed)
2.- Heihachi Mishima: Mii Costume is absent and there's seems to be no existing Tekken content in the game so far, so I suppose he's fair game.
3.- Dante: With the old /v/ leaker standing still about his Smash comments, with his call about a DMC anime being correct, and Joker's presence; I think he's actually gonna join the game.
4.- Steve/Banjo: Data for Rare characters, plus rumours about Minecraft content still in the air, it could either way to be honest.
5.- Sora/Neku/2B: Yeah, I still think we'll get a Square character, things are just more open now that Joker shows just how many liberties there are with choices.
I still trust Vergeben after last night. Don't know what happened there, but whatevs.
Also, God bless Nintendo for knowing it's more important to bring desirable characters than making cheap publicity stunts. Things are better off that way.
Wait, really? Haven't unlocked Pac-Man yet, so I can't verify that yet. Think you could pass me a picture of it?Hey! I just wanted to give you a head's up that Heihachi is actually now in pixelated form inside of Pacman's Namco Taunt.
I would suggest hopping over to the Heihachi thread! Should be near the latest post.Wait, really? Haven't unlocked Pac-Man yet, so I can't verify that yet. Think you could pass me a picture of it?
Thanks, mate.I would suggest hopping over to the Heihachi thread! Should be near the latest post.
Err isn't Lara Croft an Square Enix property?Lara Croft - Microsoft rep
Whoops, you're right. Put her on the wrong list. Will fix thatErr isn't Lara Croft an Square Enix property?
Wouldn't Crash be the most likely Sony rep?My revised predictions now that Joker is in
1. Heihachi/Lloyd Irving - Bandi-Namco rep
2. sylux - Metroid Prime promotion
3. sora/Lara Croft - square rep
4. Master Chief/Bajo/steve- Microsoft rep
Bold prediction: sony rep. Very little chance this happens, but it would fit with the characters you would never expect theme for the DLC. Top contenders for that role would be Kratos , Nathan Drake, sackboy, or maybe Ellie or Joel from Last of Us. None of those are likely, but I do think we get something extremely out of the blue, possibly as the final character overall
He's no longer Sony. Hasn't been so for a long time.Wouldn't Crash be the most likely Sony rep?
Man that's confusing; the link is so tight in my head lol. He's no longer Sony. Hasn't been so for a long time.
As you can see, clearly not at all. Glad I was one of the few that wasn't soaking up the Minecraft and Granblue dribble and actually came out on top. My list changes more in the angle that Marx isn't happening at this point.>Granblue
>Dragon Quest
>Minecraft
Good lord these are awful choices! We live in the darkest timeline where these insider clowns end up being right and we have to sit through this absolute garbage they spew out.
Here's my list of choices that you'll probably hate:
1. Sora
2. Joker
3. 2B
4. Rayman
5. Marx
