I doubt before Brawl that many people even talked about Pit.
They did, but usually only in the context of Captain N (where he was called "Kid Icarus", remember) or to get someone to ask who on Earth Pit was so they could reply "exactly." Sort of like the unfortunate position our girls are in today.

Oh yeah....Captain N....I remember people bringing that back up after Simon Belmont was revealed. It seems Sakurai brung back the Captain N crew. If only he could reunite the Captain Rainbow crew. Little Mac, Lip, and Takamaru. I don’t know when that would happen, but it would be a neat throwback to a rather obscure title. (Despite Tomorrow’s Passion being a thing on Boxing Ring.)
As for Lip tho, no offense to Takamaru fans, I know he has actually appeared in Smash as an AT for two games, but I could kinda see Sakurai putting Lip in first considering just how much PdP seems to affect him as a developer. Then bringing in Takamaru and having Nintendo revive both. They honestly deserve the same treatment Little Mac got. As for how long the wait will be, I dunno, but as long as Sakurai and/or Nintendo keeps on referencing it, I refuse to believe Nintendo is just going to keep doing this for years to come. I’m sorry, but I just do.

Bluntly, get used to it. We've already had one Lipless decade, and it's very likely we'll be getting another. Panepon's 20th anniversary passed without any sort of official acknowledgment, its 25th will too, as will its 30th... As long as Fire Emblem prints money for IS, their smaller franchises are likely to stay dead. Or worse, in the permanent naughty corner with everything else Nintendo wants to forget.

...I really hope that rumor that Nintendo will use the Switch to reintroduce their dormant IPs to a new generation are true. A new F-Zero, Wars, Starfy, and...yes, even Panel de Pon, portable, with modern graphics and production values. Would this not be a beautiful thing? But unfortunately, we live in the darkest possible timeline.

Exactly.
Smash Bros alone has the ability to take long, forgotten franchises and shed light on them, making them cool and relevant again.
I know I mention Kid Icarus a lot here, but the thing is, my case with it is completely true.
I doubt before Brawl that many people even talked about Pit.
I know that PdP is a Japan locked series, but who says it has to stay that way? Just do the Marth thing in Melee again. Fire Emblem became huge, PdP has the potential too. I’d even argue it could become bigger than FE considering how popular magical girls are nowadays. People make clubs around this type of thing for Sakurai’s sake.

Actually, Pit had a lot of demand for Brawl.

Yeah, there was a cult following for Pit before Brawl along with a trophy that helped his relevance. I think it was really only relevant outside of Japan since the GB Kid Icarus game was not released until a few days before the JPs release of Uprising which is never mentioned in the game. Which could explain why KI was not on the Famicom Mini.
I think Pdp is more comparable to KI in Japan since it was included on the SFC Mini. Only recently the Japanese audience picked up from the mini. Its clear there's a Pdp cut in Japan with the videos. (Its very small though) Punch Out!! had limited releases in Japan until the Wii, but it could be said for the Panepon games except for the handheld ones. (Though the GBC Pokemon game hasn't gotten a VC release in Japan) Though there still isn't video uploads everyday for Pdp, but its a series without a new game in 10+ years that wasn't the same look in every game.

Would it be accurate to say that Panepon now in Japan is about as popular as Kid Icarus was internationally before its revival in Brawl, and Panepon now internationally is about as popular as Kid Icarus was in Japan back then?

Idk.
All I know is that Lip is virtually unknown here in America. Even tho Lip is strictly Japanese (as of now, hope it’s victim to change) is PdP that popular? It can’t be as popular as Puyo Puyo....unfortunately. Oof.

The only reason people would talk about her here is because of the stick.
The other day, someone was suprised Lip was a girl. Double oof.

I'd still say Pdp is obscure, even in Japan. Many people in Japan were surprised that it even made it into the Sfc Mini.
The handheld games was the best opportunity to see if the fairies would do well and see if they would properly establish the skin for the series, but they ended up not using them in the GBC color game. (The handhelds are more popular than consoles)
The GC was a bad time like the SFC era because it wasn't nearly as popular compared to the PS2 as seen with a possible reason they cancelled the 2003 release outside of Japan. Pdp is also more complex to play than Puyo Puyo, hence the game's sales. They mention in the Pdp interview that it may take you weeks before you can get through Pdp. Puyo Puyo is also 3rd party, so it can be available on more consoles than what Pdp can ever have.
Nintendo to this day has never let the fairies be on handhelds except for the New 3ds VC.

I feel like an outlier. I learned about Lip in a method that was not Lip's Stick in Melee... Very sad that this is her eternal legacy.

I'd like to encourage everyone reading the thread to try and spread that petition around as much as you can. This isn't just my fight, and even if it were, I don't want it to linger at 25 signers forever. We all need to lend a hand if she's going to survive. Every one of us.

Already did.
Now whether or not the people decide to just skim over it or not is out of my control, unfortunately.
It also seems like the only real way to make her and her series relevant again is...well....Smash.
As of right here and right now, the only non-smash reference to PdP was New Leaf. The fact they brought it back after 9 years of nothing speaks volumes to me. They know it exists, they know they could do something with it, they know people want it, BUT whether they go through with it or not is unknown. With Ultimate, I’d like to believe it will mean something (mainly because it started to pick up steam around the smash ballot, and the Puzzle League update for AC happened one year after the ballot ended) but based on things seen so far, it’s iffy. Sukapon and Takamaru being assists say one thing, but what we supposedly saw recently says another. I don’t know what to think. Oof.

All I hope is that people don't run out of steam after Ultimate if Lip's not there. It's already hard enough to get this fanbase excited about anything. It seems 99% of us have been beaten down into complacency after years of ignorance from all sides.

I hope not either.
But at the same time, I understand those who might feel down about her still not being in.
The ‘Everyone Is Here’ thing is what really stirs that pot. Lip is still a somebody.

There's also the worry that, after all the beloved, classic characters who may finally be getting their time to shine after years of fan requests, people will start to think that anybody else would either be put in to advertise a new game, or would be scraping the bottom of the barrel.

You mean like :ultcorrin:?
Lmao, kidding.
Smash should really be about mixing in the old with the new imo.
I know a lot of people want characters like Spring Man, Rex & Pyra, as well as even a gen 7 Pokémon, (Which, apparently, isn’t going to happen in at least the base roster, oddly enough.) but having some classics to bring back to light alongside them never hurts.

Lol, after doing some web searching, imagine if THIS was the roster for Smash 64:
A952DA42-42AB-4FE3-921E-76CD0177C2B1.jpeg

Just imagine a world where instead of the original 12, it all started off as the original 24.
And Lip was among them. She was in every Smash entry since the beginning, and never got cut.
I wished we lived in this timeline.
(Plus, Banjo and Pit being one of the originals? Hell yeah. Mewtwo looks possessed by a demon, tho.)

If the Grinch leak (Banjo) was true, then the only character absent from this picture would be Lip...
12 + 1 (64) - Master Hand a Boss
6 (M)
3 (B)
1 (U) - If Grinch is true
1 left...
Lip would stand as an odd choice since she's the only one who was never considered for any game to be a playable fighter.
Others made it into later installments.

That image will be recreatable if Lip is ever playable.
It would be funny if people was to acknowledge this picture when Banjo is confirmed is like, we just need Lip left.

Well Lip isn't my most wanted character in Smash with that spot going to Shantae and Dixie but im sold on that proposed moveset and on the first page and it would be nice to see more classic franchises pop up. So im rooting for you!

I'd replace Falco with Wolf and it'd be perfect.

The thing that sells this roster for me is that we have Ness and Lip and the same roster. Later in Brawl, we get Lucas with Ness, then Furil with Lip. This would’ve been a great reality to have.
Hahahahaha....but FIRE EMBLEM....hahahahaha....

I'm okay with most of the Fire Emblem characters, but there was no reason for Corrin to exist besides capitalism.

Here’s a good question:
If PdP took off like FE did in Melee, how many reps would you think it would have at this point in Ultimate, and who would they be?

Personally, I think Lip, maybe Flare as an Echo, and Sanatos, plus some appropriate new characters if the series ever got around to adding any. I like the idea of the Fairy of Dreams that was brought up earlier in the thread. We don't really have a fighter who uses portals yet.

I'm not worried about that. If Nintendo is smart and want's to make maximum cash, they will strike a balance between advertisements, fan picks and third parties Juggernauts. The DLC will be just as "Ultimate" as the base roster.

And old forgotten classics that deserve to be revamped anew. As much as I like the new IP’s, Nintendo needs to stop being so afraid of bringing back the old and making it new. It seems they are slightly improving with Golden Sun supposedly being represented in Smash, but lesser known IP’s need their time to shine too. (PdP especially)

I just want to see what Issac supporters will go to next after he gets into the game, maybe another dormant IP?

Yeah, like maybe... oh, I dunno. Joy Mech Fight. (Sarcasm of course.)
Takamaru, but not much people ask for him in Japan. There are people who do ask for Takamaru. He wasn't even in the Smash 2 Melee poll but it means he is more of a choice outside of Japan. He doesn't have the origin region supporting him, similar to Ninten.

That said, I also support Sukapon and Takamaru, and Prince Sable is my most wanted. Will you forgive me for doing business with the competition?

No way.
How DARE you have an opinion on who you want to support!
.....
N’ah, just kidding. Support whoever you want.
As much as I want Lip, (She’s my #1 choice because of how underrated and poorly treated she is) I also support Shantae, Shadow, (Although I think he’s guaranteed at this point) and Takamaru to an extent just so we can have the Captain Rainbow trio together. (Forgive me, I actually don’t know THAT much about Marusame Castle outside of Takamaru’s appearance in Captain Rainbow, but he seems like a cool character to have in Smash)

My most wanted characters are Lip, then in no particular order Inkling, Bomberman, K. Rool, Ridley, Geno, and Banjo. The Ultimate development cycle has been something of a roller coaster for me, as you can imagine. Three are playable, two may be playable, one is an Assist, and poor little Lippy is, as far as we know, still MIA.

Well....considering the grinch leak...at least most of your wish list will come true.
As for me....ugh...Shadow will be cool. Banjo too.
I just pray on everything Sakurai will pull a ‘But hold on....we have one more thing to show you’ and it’s a character NOT on the banner. And it happens to be you-know-who.
Again, a guy can dream.

If the Grinch leak is real, then it'll be a very bittersweet feeling. I might end up buying it after all, and I'd definitely end up enjoying Inkling and K. Rool and Ridley and all the rest, but I don't know if I'd have the heart to call it the "ultimate" Smash game if our girl is still missing.

The only real char on that banner that harms her chances detrimentally is Mach Rider.
I’m kinda wondering when Sakurai will get into the retro SNES characters, it seems he is still fixated on NES. Which isn’t a HUGE problem, but there are still NES characters like Excitebiker who people seem to be more focused on than Lip, despite her item.
Still, I hope she’ll be in Ultimate despite Mach Rider’s appearance. We could still get a NES retro, and a SNES retro even if the chances seem slim.
(And, again, before anyone mentions Geno, I DO NOT classify him as a retro rep since he is still a Mario character.)

It's kind of a heartbreaking thought to imagine another decade (or more) with no Lip. A character as adorable and sweet as her doesn't deserve to be forgotten.

Oh, she won’t.
I personally still believe that Lip outfit in New Leaf 1 year after the ballot ending had to mean something. I mean, I that was also around the time DLC mii costumes started existing in Smash 4.
Assuming that the Lip outfit in New Leaf meant something, what would make them decide to have a Lip outfit in New Leaf rather than Smash 4?
(Now imagine if the Lip outfit was a mii costume in Smash 4 instead.)
