i'm trying to figure it out from a psychological standpoint..

why, as men, do we choose to represent ourselves using the girls we like in anime?

we don't choose big muscle men or awesome male protagonists as pictures

sometimes even in MMORPG's or RPG's, we play favoritism with the female characters we're attracted to

it's not that we want to BE women... i suppose it could simply be that attraction

lol i wonder what that says about men

we reveal our personality not by showing the male idol that we want to become

but through the fictional woman we love

i enjoy this boa hancock avatar MUCH more than i enjoyed that luffy avatar, even though it was awesome

to-love-ru is just fanservice. it's ok and very repetitive. eve from black cat is there and train makes an appearance. it's by the same writer of black cat.

@choknator, I always choose things I'd rather look at for hours in avatars and MMORPGs. I find looking at female forms more enjoyable than staring at some muscular guy.

but as for the particular choices we make...

sometimes it does show what kind of guy we are, or at least which animes we like. so we pick our favorite girls from our favorite animes/games/manga, pretty legit

Well... it's not really Eve and Train, but then again, it kind of is.
And I think the writer for To-Love-Ru and Black Cat are different. They just have the same artist.

And what's up with choknater going all Freud on us... Although he didn't come to any conclusions. Levitas simply just came and stated what is probably the best theory out there.
As for myself, Haruhi is probably my most favorite character. And I actually have a thing for brunettes with shoulder-length hair (and with uneven bangs), so she even fits that! And the fact that I can entertain myself with the colors every single day with a Haruhi avatar is also a reason. And this helps me keep track of the days of the week (before I started this, I often forget what day of the week it is).

PS: I've uploaded avatars to SmashBoards over 200 times, already. (Speaking of which, it's almost midnight where I live, so it's time to change it again...)

I was watching Hey Arnold yesterday, that's what reminded me of that. Curly ("Let's paint ourselves with tiger stripes and free all the animals in the zoo!") and Oskar Kokoshka ("Eh heh heh heh!") are the best characters IMO.
On topic: With Umineko starting this season, I'll be watching 4 shows with Rie Kugimiya, though she's only a flat chested tsundere in one of them. Hoping to catch her messing up and using her taco-loli voice for Nagi, or her tsuntsun Nagi voice for Alphonse or something like that.
