Oh, KEY has a forced update?
The Smash Stack method should always work regardless of your system version.

Yeah Smash Stack works. I accidentally updated my wii to play DCKR. :p
So I had to install homebrew again.

Uh, I don't think the Wii actually updates when you put in new games. I think that's just the Wii's method of installing games or something.

I'm confused about what you're trying to say, Ricky.

1. On many newer games, access to said games from the system menu is refused until you update.

2. I have only gotten this on New Super Mario Bros. (Disc update was 4.1) and Donkey Kong Country Returns (Disc update was 4.3).

3. The update doesn't happen immediately when you put it in. You have to agree to it when you load the game.

4. The newest version of the Homebrew Channel isn't deleted by 4.3 if you choose to update.

Are any of these facts related to the point you're trying to make?
Please explain which are (if any) and why. ^^;

By the way,
NICK, DO YOU HAVE ANY CUSTOM BRAWL STAGES ON YOUR WII THAT YOU WANT TO KEEP?

Well, I remember getting that pop-up when putting in Metroid: Other M for the first time. However, nothing changed in my Wii when the update completed (I don't even have an internet connection on my Wii in my dorm, so how could I get a system update?). I think that the game was just installing itself onto the hard drive or something, just like games do for the PS3.

Games don't install themselves to harddrives otherwise your memory would fill up quicker than normal. And I don't think I had custom stages to begin with Shaun.

No, games actually update the system. The updates are stored on the disc itself.
The updates have almost nothing to do with the games themselves, Nintendo's just trying to stop people that use Homebrew to pirate games.

I don't know anything about your specific situation or why you weren't forced to update.

EDIT: There should be three custom stages that come with the game, Nick. If you still have them, delete them whenever you get the chance.

The Wii explodes, killing everyone in a twelve-mile radius.

Actually, I have no idea.
I would assume that it just wouldn't load the .elf and would instead display the three stages or something like that.

Did you use Smash Stack the first time you did it?

It's an exploit of the way Brawl loads custom stages.
From what I can tell, *when the game fails to find custom stages on the Wii itself, it tries to load from the SD card.
Smash Stack is a specialized bin file that you place in a "private\wii\app\rsbe\st" folder that forces the Wii to load .elf files (like HackMii's boot.elf).

*That's why you can't have custom stages on the Wii itself.

(Mind you, this is just what I've deduced from the way the files are arranged and the one time I've used this method to install on someone's Wii, so I can't really go more in-depth on the subject.
^^; )

If you bring your Wii to the next smashfest, your SD card will have what's necessary to install HBC on it.
I'll bring my laptop as well to switch back to your normal files after installation.
