You guys should ask Smashmods if you can add your stuff to their website.

It's a cool idea, is it technically speaking legal? burning melee & changing the files around i mean.

that's cool. well, if you guys end up doing this just don't make the hacks too...overwhelming. looking at lucky's wii with like inverted fox/marth on an inverted yoshi's story with ****in happy hardcore music blasting is the opposite of appealing to me. like, some well done skins and polished up stages would be cool. but a master hack of seizures ensued sounds meh.

You can edit the rom pretty easily now, so if you dont like the default settings of the rom, they could put other packages (or maybe full roms) that re less...obnoxious.

It's illegal to distribute a ROM you didn't purchase, iirc, which is why smashboards doesn't allow you to do that.

wait, smashboards doesn't allow you to do what, distribute a ROM? Well, how it works is if you own a physical copy of any ROM you use, it's legal. Same goes with the concept of downloading music, which is also why torrenting is still legal, but not torrenting things you don't own.

and yeah, you could edit around and change packages, but i think ultimately that defeats alot of the project. the easiness of having an overall master hack without having to know how to do it yourself

The problem is if they try to create an 'ultimate' rom, it's inherently not going to be liked by everyone, so giving people the option to change things (it's really not that hard to ,say, use one texture over another) would make the website/forum they use that much better for everyone interested.

and *shrug* that's how i've always understood the rule at smashboards, which is why SleepyK made you send him that email that automatically sent you his ROM rahter htan just posting it here (or so i thought)

I also thought it was illegal to produce copies of the rom and distribute them, but again, im not 100% sure on these things.

Is that really your email ruken lol?

god i'd kill for an @melee.com address lol

and i agree with trahh about keeping it rather low key and professional rather than a rave, although if it was easily accessible to alter, then there shouldn't be a problem

actually yeah, i think that's where it goes illegal. you can download a ROM you own, but you can't distribute it.

"In some countries, it is legal for an individual to personally make backup copies of a game they own. Individuals may make backup copies for various reasons, perhaps as insurance against losing the game or as redundancy in the event that the original game's medium becomes unreadable. See the section on ROMs and Preservation.

However, in the U.S. it has been illegal since 1983 for a user to create their own backups of video game ROMs onto other cartridges"

also just saw this..

"Some games companies, such as Nintendo, print warnings inside their game manuals that they do not allow users to make backup or archival copies"

it's still illegal whether or not you own an original copy

nintendo website said:
There is a good deal of misinformation on the Internet regarding the backup/archival copy exception. It is not a "second copy" rule and is often mistakenly cited for the proposition that if you have one lawful copy of a copyrighted work, you are entitled to have a second copy of the copyrighted work even if that second copy is an infringing copy. The backup/archival copy exception is a very narrow limitation relating to a copy being made by the rightful owner of an authentic game to ensure he or she has one in the event of damage or destruction of the authentic. Therefore, whether you have an authentic game or not, or whether you have possession of a Nintendo ROM for a limited amount of time, i.e. 24 hours, it is illegal to download and play a Nintendo ROM from the Internet.

I don't really get that, it says you can download a copy of a game incase something breaks, but then 24 hours or more later you can't have that copy? so you're melee breaks, and you download a copy online, you can only play it for 24 hours then destroy it? Because it does say:

"The backup/archival copy exception is a very narrow limitation relating to a copy being made by the rightful owner of an authentic game to ensure he or she has one in the event of damage or destruction of the authentic."

is that not saying you can do it? the whole paragraph just seems like a lot of wording made to confuse people to scare them out of downloading games.

The 24 hours deal is a myth that goes around the internet that states it's legal to have a ROM on your computer (assuming you own the original) for 24 hours and then you have to discard it. Otherwise, it's illegal from that point on. What Nintendo is saying on that quote that even if you hold a ROM for less than "24 hours" it's still illegal.

I don't think that's what their saying..i'm pretty sure their saying it's a myth that you're able to have two copies of a game, one being illegal, just because you bought the first, and that this situation is only legal in the case that your game is damaged or unuseable and you download a 2nd copy.

wouldn't that be why it says

The backup/archival copy exception is a very narrow limitation relating to a copy being made by the rightful owner of an authentic game to ensure he or she has one in the event of damage or destruction of the authentic. [sorry for quoting again]

see, in there, it doesn't say it's not allowed, it just says it's a very specific, narrow legal thing to do in the case that it happened. "a very narrow limitation"

edit; gahh then reading the rest just sounds like the opposite of the prior sentence. I dunno. confusing. maybe you're right. either way nintendo worded that like *******s

Hey guys, I talked iwth one of the admins on Smashmods, and they are willing to let you guys have your own subforum on their website!

They want to know if someone is willing to blog about it on the front page (when you get to smashmods.com) or not.

i swear

i've been saying this idea for a long time now

but does anyone think it's a good idea to hack melee so that the screen shakes less (in doubles, for example, or when the wind blows on DL, or when bowser wavedashes, or when someone misses a tech, etc), or when the screen's zoomed out, have the percentages get translucent like they do in brawl?

so that when you're in dreamland, in teams, and someone's dying off the top, and the wind is blowing, and you're getting tech chased, you can see what the ****'s going on?!??

just a thought haha

This is a really interesting idea. But forgive me if I wait and see what the whole smashmod forum will be about before I jump into anything here.

Are you going to keep it completely aesthetic? Or are you guys thinking about changing gameplay such as buffing the negligible and low tiers, adding characters, or making Melee- (super crazy fun wildly unbalanced melee, for kicks and giggles of course). I've never really understood while brawl is lightyears ahead in the hacking department than melee while the game is 7 years younger.

Or maybe thats just cause melee is actually a good game without hacks

because brawl is simply easier to hack. oh and another major reason is because the wii has a SD/USB slot, so you don't have to burn anything just to see if the hacks are working..and no, there will be absolutely zero gameplay hack changes.
