Every item has a default direction that it goes; shells go forward, bananas and fake boxes backwards, etc. without the need to hold forward or back, but you can hold forward or back to change the direction thrown.

I know, but this was a fake box that went forward & I wasn't even pushing forward. To make things worse this box caused me to crash down into a gap and I fell down.

@Box: nice job on that Mapletree level. I'm totally confused how you avoided BOTH fake boxes on that ramp there. There wasn't much if any room to avoid both of them.
How'd you do it?

Ok, I'm just lying to myself where I'm sure it happened when I was doing a tight turn. Don't know why that happens in the game, but it's happened to me before.

There was just enough room to get through(I had to slow down alittle though) lol I put a banana there after I made it through and it would be impossible I get through that
