not... really, no
its actual gameplay is pretty much garbage? all the bosses are damage sponges and the combat is otherwise standard atb
it's a run of the mill rpg maker game, outside of the lore
But again, because it was the Hype Game(TM) of the time, it's good points would've been exaggerated to hell. Just like with Undertale now.

The combat in Undertale is "try to get the middle of the bar and dodge the bullet hells". It's just a stripped down Paper Mario for attacking + basic Touhou for dodging, with the occasional one-time-only boss gimmick. And the Pacifist paths are all just "select the right menu options or touhou dodge for long enough".

Just like OFF, the combat/gameplay itself for the most part isn't anything to write home about, and also isn't at all what anyone cares about. It's the characters and the story that are the only things people care about, and while great, can't 100% carry a game to greatness on it's own. The game isn't lauded because Toby made the best RPG of all time (which he didn't), it's because Toby wrote characters and dialogue people went gaga over.

Five Nights At Freddy's is a short, experimental indie horror game about looking at cameras...why did it gain such a ridiculously huge fanbase?
As a long time horror game fan, let me explain FNAF.

I'm going to preface this by saying that story is not a priority for me. I really don't care that much about the endless speculation revolving around the series' lore. I will be talking exclusively about game play.

Horror games work on a cycle. A game comes out, everyone copies it, then a new game comes out that breaks the cycle and starts it anew. Resident Evil 1 copied Alone in the Dark, then everyone copied Resi1, then Resi4 came out and everyone copied Resi4, then Amnesia came out and everone copied Amnesia, and then Slender.

FNAF is the newest game in the cycle.

The fact is, regardless of how you feel about FNAF, it was something new for horror games. In Alone in the Dark you had to pick your fights, in Resi4 you blasted through baddies, in Amnesia and Slender you ran from them. Here? Now the concept had changed, you couldn't run. You were truly trapped and it was up to your wits.

Everything about the way this game played was completely different from other horror titles. You had to learn enemy patterns and figure out when to route them. A horror gamer's best friend, resource management, was still here. But now the focus wasn't on exploring to find more, it had a different feel to it. You couldn't get more, you had to use them smarter than ever. The game was tense, stressful, the monsters and setting were unique and original. And most importantly, it was fun. FNAF is honestly one of the most refreshing and original horror games I had played in years.

BTW FNAF2 = best game in the series.

Liking or disliking a game because it is Indie is silly. Sure there is a bit of charm because a tiny little company made something but the gameplay isn't vastly different because of it. Games are games. Putting random tags on it for the sake of having tags doesn't change ****.

i do like octodad and think it has its merits
but "lper culture", for lack of a better term, is deeefinitely a contributor to its popularity
y'know, slapstick humor, ragdoll physics, whatevs
He's just a normal dad, it's a normal game, what are you talking about?
(i agree)

TBH, I have a seriously have a hard time believing that it will become a fad.

I think it will become resonated with fans for a long time, just like the Mother fanbase.
OFF resonated with a bunch of people as well for how deep it was and it's lore, characters, and it's ending and all of that.

But when was the last time you heard anyone talk about OFF outside of me bringing it up right now?

Undertale is going to go down the exact same path. Save this post and come back to it in a year (IMO it won't even take that long). I'd bet my account on it.

Because of Markiplier, basically. You know.... That vid with that title claiming it was the scariest game in years? Yeah, pretty sure that's how it started.
Because it was perfect for Youtube. People eat reactions up and a game all about jumpscares? Reaction opportunities are pretty much the entire game.

All the big youtubers did it and here we are.
This too, excellent point.

As for Undertale conversation. I don't it's a fad per say, but I do think it is indeed being exaggerated. It'll still be liked, but it wom't be so high and mighty.

Also, eh, the gameplay of it doesn't seem to interest me at all. So I'll probably just watch a playthrough of it.

I cant make a top 10 list of games, Im extremely biased towards one series and would probably on choose games from said series....

I havent played Undertale to determine if its better than Super Mario World, but even then my opinion cant compete with the thousands of other people out there.

Havent watched SU either, so I dunno what you people are on about.

I like Indies cause plenty of new ideas are made from just about anyone and everyone.

We cannot determine which games are fads or not until, say 5 years after the games release.

The best way to describe FNAF IMO is that it's a tower defense horror game. Which is pretty unique.

Also I just watched that Sam Pepper prank, that was ****ing atrocious.

Though a part of me thinks the person being pranked was actually in on it. "HE'S ALL I HAVE" sounds like a really over the top and cheesy thing to say if you were really in that situation, unless you really, really did have nothing but your best friend left.

I should elaborate on my post a bit: I don't specifically dislike a game because it's indie, I just meant that no indie has really caught my eye yet personally. There are probably some out there that would really appeal to me, but it's hard to tell since the indie market exploded just a little while ago.

That is...actually very applicable to me.
Even I wouldn't say THAT though...

Heartwarmer or not, it's going to decline in popularity or not. People always think something won't be just a fad, and it turns out that it is. Doesn't mean the game is bad, though.
That can be applied to pretty much every game really. Let's use Super Mario World for example. Even after Super Mario World released nearly 20 years ago, the game still is very popular, continuing its popularity through ROM hacks, which includes Kaizo Mario.

In my opinion, with the UT fanbase creating their own story on what the Undertale's post game are like through comics/videos, the seemingly endless dialogue and secrets, and the huge potential of Undertale mods with the gameplay, I think it will be a community that will last for a long time.

What in God's name is that Sam Pepper prank? That is just cruel.

Hope that sicko gets banned from Youtube, and hopefully from making pranks if that's even possible.

Mario World was a high-budget game that was created by the most famous gaming company in the world, starring protagonists and antagonist everyone already knew and loved, alongside much more.

Undertale is an indie game by one developer that has characters no one has ever known about before.

Big difference.

Started looking up the Sam Pepper thing...

Stopped short of actually watching the video, because that's what they want. Yet another case where someone's gaming the system by making something everybody will hate and talk about. Just another mariotehplumber.

If you guys want an actually good pranking channel, I recommend fouseyTUBE.

There are one or two I think would be slightly controversial but most of them are perfectly fine, like this one:

He also does some thought provoking social experiments:

Sure Undertale will probably won't be as popular as Mario himself, but that wasn't the reason the game continued to be popular. It was the joy of making custom levels by modding SMW combined with it's super smooth gameplay led to where the Super Mario World community is today.

Heck, Super Smash Bros. Melee still manages to live in people's hearts through the nostalgic atmosphere of the game. The game became more popular when the competitive scene came in after finding advanced techniques that made the game more exciting to watch.

I think Undertale can live as long as those communities, just through other unique means like the ones I mentioned.

I think let's plays are fine if you find the "hosts" entertaining, like I enjoy Game Grumps, Achievement Hunter, Super Panic Frenzy, and a bit of Markiplier.

I would never watch a let's play to experience a game and its story, I don't even like watching friends play games, they're the kind of thing that really should be experienced first hand.

In my opinion I find Wario's bike better than his Signature Shoulder charge side B PM.
Why?
Because 1.It removes Wario's only projectile (Which to me is quite a problem for Wario against certain characters),
and 2.It gives him less recovery, sure it does give him recovery, but it has less vertical recovery

Now don't get me wrong, I am fine that the makers of PM give him a Shoulder charge side B, and giving his WL series more love to it's fans. But to me it's not that useful to me than the Bike he had in the offical smash games.

I usually watch people play games that I can't and by "I can't" I mean I'm too afraid to play through most silent hill games by myself.

I'm not really a fan of solo let's players (with the exception of ClementJ64), I'm more of a fan of let's plays with multiple people in them, such as BrainScratch and the Super Gaming Bros.

Oh my gosh, Indivisible is at 96%. They're totally going to make it, especially since the art-contest ends tonight; so all of those people that were holding off on throwing money at it until they know the results of the contest are going to be tossing in their funds tomorrow.

Speaking of the art contest; if anyone is interested, here's my entry.

And on the subject of Let's Plays and stuff... yeah I tend to only watch if I've already beaten it, it's a game I'm never going to play, or it's a game that has a lot of replay-ability like people playing Mario Party or something. I haven't watched any Let's Plays of MGSV, Bloodborne,Fallout or certain other games yet because when I get my PS4 I'm going to be playing through those; after which I'll probably go watch TBFP or Game Grumps play them.
