Have guys heard about Cool Cat?
Well, IT SUCKS.
Not only is it bad movie, but the creator is such a baby about people who criticize it.
I've been following the story. It's pretty entertaining. Another example of how to NOT interact with the Internet.

Undertale's fad status is pretty much the same as OFF's a few years ago.

Simplistic indie game with "deep" meanings behind it, a bunch of characters who generally only have one personality trait that actually defines them, and characters that because you interact with them more than anyone else, end up being the fan favorites (the skelebros for Undertale and Zachary for OFF).

OFF a few years ago was huge and had a massive fandom and tons of art and people proclaiming it the best game ever. Had this poll been happening then, OFF would be steamrolling vastly superior games that have actually stood the test of time, just like how Undertale is doing now.

The only reason it's being rated so highly is entirely due to the fact that it's the current fad. It will absolutely fade and people will generally forget about it even existing (like many people probably did about OFF until I brought it up).

It's things like this that make me hate fad culture more than almost anything in gaming. Far too many people go "game I'm playing right now that I like = best game of all of time" and completely fail to think long term about the game's lasting appeal or the impact it will have in the future. It's the reason why Undertale is being treated as dog god's gift to gaming more than the neat little indie diversion it is.

The fact that it's beating out possibly the best Mario 2D platformer is testament to the how strong fad culture can be. For a game that within a few months from now, will be something that almost no one bothers talking about anymore. It happened with OFF, which was basically Undertale before Undertale was Undertale. Undertale, I can safely say from past experience, won't even be a blip on the radar of gaming history. Undertale is a 2 month old feelsy game that creatively averts a lot of RPG tropes. Super Mario World is a game that defined a console generation and the platformer genre as a whole. It is objectively a better game than Undertale.

But because Undertale is the flavor of the month, it's going to beat out a genre-defining game because it's still living out it's Big Thing(TM) shelf life that coincided with this poll.

And I say all this as someone who loves the game and is currently on his 4th playthrough of Undertale.

This game is the definition of fleeting popularity, and you can quote me that by this time next year, no one will give a rat's toss about Undertale.

Gender?
Sometimes it's complicated.

SJWs?
Most of them need to calm down.

Fandoms?
See previous statement.

FExSMT?
I think I'd rather just watch the reveal trailer again than play the finished product.

Let's Plays?
I'd rather play than watch a loud person do it.

Let's plays are give and take with me. I don't think the idea is inherently bad. And if someone can be informative or at least funny, then more power to them. Video games are a medium to work on much like anything. Even things like reviews or posts on a forum are a lot like LPs: As they're relaying an experience or opinion.

Oh sure you have the crappy Let's Players (likes the ones who scream over crappy horror games), but you'll always get those kinds of people with anything.

God I hate lets play culture.

We're at a point where people would rather watch a game than play it. And what's even worse is that people seem to think that watching a game is the same as playing it.
You seem to forget that tons of people don't have the means to play it.

Like, I REALLY wanna play all of MGS. But I can't, so me and one of my best friends are watching all of it together. And this is even better then playing it; we get to experience all of the story by watching it, instead of playing it and learning about the story and such separated.

You don't need to be so rude and judgemental despite not knowing why people may watch a game.

It's too early to be calling Undertale best game of all time, it's also too early to say it's a fad of the month tho.

Let's Plays are why i'm on the internet. I saw a video from Chuggaconroy and it was a slippery slope from there. I am a failed let's player, (****ty mic, no exposure, bad upload schedule, quit because college. But it was a dream so I dont care) so obviously i'm a little biased but some of them can be very well done.

Some older games people dont have the ability to play. And some of them can be super informative and well made (Chuggaconroy). Not to say there aren't a humongous amount of ****ty ones who either just scream or play fad games. But sometimes watching instead of playing isn't so bad.

The opinions of Undertale will become more objective after the period of hype has passed.

Briefly. Then they will become exaggerated again as people put on their rose-tinted glasses.

GOAT is subjective anyway. Last I checked people didn't uniformly enjoy the same things equally.

You know what else seems to kind of a fad? Five Night's At Freddy's.
I'm not hearing about it much anymore.
Yeah, even with that Halloween dlc and RPG in the works, literally no one seems to talk about it much anymore, not even people who I know like the series.

Yeah and had OFF been on Steam I'd be willing to bet it's stats would've been pretty much exactly the same.

I'm not denying it's a good game. Far from it! It's a fun game and I'm enjoying the heck out of it rn.

But a game that LASTS? Not a chance in hell. Like I said, get back to me a year from now and see how popular Undertale is then. People will move on from it faster than they would stepping on a fly.

None of you have PS2s or 3s? My friends and I will usually go out and nab whatever game we want and play it together.

Although if that's not your style or if there's just circumstancs then it just comes to different strokes at that point.

You know that really isn't much of an accomplishment...

Most of the comments find it messed up, but that doesn't do anything, you gave it a view and that's all he wants. Either way, I found this sickening, and would never stay friends with someone if they did something like this to me. You are a truly distasteful person to try something like this imo.

not... really, no
its actual gameplay is pretty much garbage? all the bosses are damage sponges and the combat is otherwise standard atb
it's a run of the mill rpg maker game, outside of the lore

FNAF is still popular.

It has a new game coming out.

People are just waiting for the next game, FNAF World.

Lots of fanbases go quiet while waiting for the next game.

Sonic fanbase has been quiet this year when it comes to gaming.

Sonic confirmed fotm, take him out of Smash now, Sakurai. >:[

I'm not hearing about it much anymore.
Yesterday, in the metro train, I saw a 7/8 years old boy with a drawing of the characters of that game.
He was telling to his dad that Foxy (or whatever) was the best and that he wanted to make copies of the drawing.

I laughed a bit.

Sam Pepper is pretty well known for being a massive piece of **** and harassing multiple women as "pranks", he got put on blast last year about it.

I thought he was gone for good but guess not

Well, I think that's a good thing.
Of all of the "fad" games I can think of...the series is currently the only one I don't like.
I mean...The Last of Us is a AAA post-apocalyptic shooter...Shovel Knight is a 2D, retro, mascot platformer with wide appeal...
Five Nights At Freddy's is a short, experimental indie horror game about looking at cameras...why did it gain such a ridiculously huge fanbase?

Uh, no? I have a Wii U, 3DS, Xbox 360. Is that not enough? I've been considering picking up some kind of Playstation but I don't have it right now sadly.

Exactly. It's different strokes. There's many circumstances why people like watching videos over playing the game. While I prefer playing the game, I have to watch the LP's sometimes.

(well, I'm watching MGS the movie, but it counts)

Well, I think that's a good thing.

Well, the gameplay of FNAF is completely unique, unlike The Last of Us's gameplay. I won't say Shovel Knight is un-unique, because it's unique, but FNAF tried something that has never been tried before in gaming and succeeded while Shovel Knight is a platformer, while a great one.

And also..

1. The characters tend to attract fans, mostly on deviantart.
2. Lot's of popular Youtubers play the game, so many people are bound to see it and like it.
3. It's a horror game, and a lot of people just love horror games.

There's some reasoning, at least.

Because it was perfect for Youtube. People eat reactions up and a game all about jumpscares? Reaction opportunities are pretty much the entire game.

All the big youtubers did it and here we are.

I don't care for an indie game because it's the hip new indie game that 4chan or NeoGAF or tumblr or whatever is into.

I will care for an indie game if it looks like a good game that will appeal to me, same as a AAA game.

For example, Freedom Planet is my favourite indie game, simply because I tried a demo years ago (when it was still a Sonic fan game) and thought it was really ****ing cool.

TBH, I have a seriously have a hard time believing that it will become a fad.

I think it will become resonated with fans for a long time, just like the Mother fanbase.
Heartwarmer or not, it's going to decline in popularity or not. People always think something won't be just a fad, and it turns out that it is. Doesn't mean the game is bad, though.

Octodad became popular because he works hard. Leave the poor man alone.

i do like octodad and think it has its merits
