Well it definitely can't be considered family friendly...

At least not when it's blatant, anyway...
Eh, I was just meaning the different meaning of "mature" in an ironic sense. I do get what you're getting at though.

KoF12 was... it was weird.

While the visuals were amazing, the camera was really zoomed in on the fighters and it felt pretty cramped. The new mechanics were off (and they didn't even return in 13), there were only like 5 arenas, barely any characters, no teams, no final boss, super generic soundtrack (only one of the KoF staples returned), terribad netcode.

The whole game screamed "EXPERIMENTAL".
Yeah, that honestly sounds like a real low quality game sadly.

How was 13 by the way?

Man, y'all forgetting what made Awakening sold.

It was 3 reasons and one of them wasn't even fan service. That was the cherry

  • The casual "no-perma death mode" was a special case to help newcomers get in and the classic mode was still a challenge for veterans
  • How much work and detail Intelligent Systems put into the game to make it work

And here's the big one everyone is always forgetting, you wanna know what it is? Simple:

ADVERTISEMENTS
ADVERTISING
ADS ADS ADS ADS ADS
MARKETING

Nintendo actually marketing the whole damn game the whole freaking reason FEA ever sold, the first time NoA & NoE put actual WORK into getting people known about FE games since Blazing Sword came out for the GBA.

Y'all more invested over the 'waifu/husbando' thing than the people who like them moreso. It freaking sold because it was actually marketed to the masses instead of throwing it in there also Codename: STEAM and what Xenoblade X is probably getting.

Yeah, it was basically experimental for KoF 13. :/ And even then not too great of one, really. I always forget about it because it feels so awkward in the franchise as whole. It was definitely a misstep.

I... I don't... how did this happen? I feel like three things that don't go together stumbled their way into an episode of 'Will It Blend?'
Well... To be fair, as surprised as I am about that, I'd be even more surprised if it weren't for this.

Yeah, this. I mean, really. That's a simple thing people forget about in general, really. A lot of things have just flopped because of the lack of marketing.(I'm looking at you Pacific Rim.) But people tend to go around that and try to find other reasons why it flopped.

How was 13 by the way?
Probably my favorite in the series. Which is funny, pretty much went to one of the worst from one of the best. Literally everything improved. Just as I can go about why I don't like KoF 12, I can go on about why I love KoF 13 so much.

I really doubt fanservice was THE reason why FE:A did so well. Sure it helped a bit, but it wasn't the thing that made it so popular.

It had a lot going for it that helped big time: Accessiblity (Casual Mode), familiar characters to push sales (Lucina who resembles Marth), the inclusion of demos, etc.

I've known so many people who wanted to try FE but could never get into them due to the difficulty and the permadeath was a huge turn off for many. Then there comes FE:A and suddenly the same people are now into FE!

FE doesn't need fanservice to survive. There was a GAF post that explained this far better than I did since said poster is more familiar with FE than I am and went into a bit of depth on what made Awakening successful. If anyone wants a link I'll link it.
Agreed with all this.

Still, it's a shame that the sort of fanservice FE Fates has tends to be all over the place in Japanese media.

Fire Emblem used to be among the Japanese series with the least of all that stuff and now it has more of that than most of the anime I've watched.

Granted, I tend to avoid anime that have too much fanservice as I always do some research before watching something, but still.

While it doesn't really need it, I wouldn't say it's "shoehorned in".

Sexual themes or strong romantic themes are a big part of medieval fiction whether you like it or not, especially if you are at all trying to give it an resemblance to actual medieval themes. That's why Game of Thrones is such a big hit.

From what I can tell, FE is supposed to be a series Nintendo wants people to view as "mature", so it's given mature themes. Sexual relations are just a part of that. Meanwhile, Zelda will remain the "family friendly" fantasy game series (even though it still has fanservice, mainly in Twilight Princess).

Whether or not that's done tastefully, well, I can't say, as I haven't played the games. But I don't see what's wrong with having that element in Fire Emblem.
Fire Emblem isn't just a medieval fiction: it's a strategy game first and foremost.

Previous games didn't need it and had compelling storylines and engaging gameplay. This is what Fire Emblem used to be about.

The fanservice stuff is unnecessary and it's clearly shoehorned to attract the otaku crowd while alienating the older fans who actually cared about what the franchise meant to be about.

Previous Fire Emblem games did have some romantic themes, nothing wrong with that. But now you have absurd character design for the sake of fanservice (whereas before the armors looked practical), fetish fuel stuff like the face-rubbing feature (this isn't sexual stuff that fits into a medieval game no matter how you put it) and a stripping skill that is unrealistic and is clearly there for the fanservice.

This used to be a franchise that took its themes of war seriously. It was a series that had actual political drama and showed the war in and out of the battlefield. The Tellius saga even dealt with racism, albeit in a fantastical way with its two species of human beings.

Those are far more mature elements than shoehorning sexual stuff because SEX.

Adding sexual stuff doesn't make a work more mature. It can have the opposite effect, actually. Adding sexual stuff for the sake of sex and have it lack substance is actually quite immature, to be honest.

And no, I wouldn't call stuff like the face rubbing feature or having weapons suddenly strip the enemy nearly naked in the middle of the battlefield as handling sexual content maturely.

Hell, some FE games have incestuous undertones, but actually are handled in a way that fits the medieval setting perfectly.

That's cool to hear. I've never played KoF except for the Capcom VS SNK games if that counts and it always seem rather cool to me. I remember being very impressed with the background art in the older entries. SNK is a god at pixel art.

I think that makes sense for the NA release, but the Japanese release not as much.

FE12 was a remake of the most popular/best selling game in the series up to that point, and introduced the majority of the mechanics the West was introduced to with Awakening, and yet it sold under-whelmingly despite being on a better selling system than either the SNES/3DS. I don't think fanservice was the factor, at least I hope it wasn't, but I do think it was a factor otherwise I don't think Fates would have cranked it up a couple notches like it did.

Really, while there definitely is a line of where things start to get weird...

There's a level of sexual pandering that's perfectly fine. Healthy even.

Sexuality is something I expect in a rated T game and sex in general is fine.

It's when characters are reduced to objects where things get bad. But even then I feel people are too judgmental with that.

I mean, people decry Cia for her design and "attributes" but I personally love her. I was initially "lol them Japanese and their boobs" like everyone else but as I played the game and especially her DLC, I found her to be an interesting character with motivations that we really don't see in fiction anymore. I thought that she was written pretty well. I found her interesting and charming and eventually I saw her design as a positive of the character as opposed to a negative. She's a sexual person and it's not like they reduced some chaste hero to that or something. Cia definitely wants to be that kind of girl. She's speaks in innuendo. She openly flirts with Link. She's competent and fights Ganondorf to a standstill. Twice. She's definitely not reduced to an object. She's just a fun character and I never would have figured that out if I kept reducing her to an object because of her design...

People judging her by her looks was more sexist than her looks. That's really what we were doing. Not ifs, ands or buts.

So I guess... I look at the writing instead, which is why I plan to give Fates a go.

Sure Camilla has balloons instead of breasts but I want to see how she's written. Maybe she's the confident sexy one, or perhaps she's insecure and she dresses like that like that to feel more confident. Does she have hidden depths? I don't know. I want to find out. Tharja as poopy as I found her to be, had them and that made her interesting. Unlikable (to give credit where its due, she was supposed to be), but interesting. I don't want to call Fates a pandering fest until I see the writing. If the characters are interesting, competent or at least feel worthwhile, they can be as sexy as they want for all I care.

Face Rubbing is a bit weird honestly but I'm personally only gonna be irked if non-romantic choices say romantic/sexual things. If its only your S support giving you titillating suggestions and encouragements than, hey go for it. As far as I'm concerned, married people need to have more sex with each other. It does wonderful things for the relationship. If it turns into a harem, then I'll be miffed.

Naoshi Naoshi Again, I can't speak for how tasteful FE is with it's fan service. I hear Awakening is fine though and people are mostly only getting concerned with Fates, but I think we can safely assume at least a good chunk of the dialogue and scenes will be censored anyway, considering what they did with Xenoblade Chronicles X.

In general though, I think stuff only needs to be censored if it's for cultural differences. Like in XCX, not letting Lyn wear skimpy clothes in the international version is fine, since we have different views and laws regarding that here than they do in Japan. However, removing the option to change the female avatar's bust size was stupid, especially since the default size is still actually kinda sizable anyway. It also is stupid in the sense that I don't think anyone would have noticed it was there if they left it. That sort of thing is commonplace in modern RPGs where you create your own character, because most people actually like to make a character that resembles themselves. That includes features like biceps and bust size. There's no reason to deprive people of that.

It's also extremely hypocritical on NoA's part, considering they gave the A-OK to this:

Oh, and while it may be an old game, it's getting a remaster, and it has this in it...

The Double Bogey animations are also wonderful.

Examples;

-Mario gets hit, and turns into Small Mario
-Gold Mario gets hit, and turns into Super Mario (really lovely touch)
-Waluigi falls into one of those comical "GET OUT" holes
-Kamek's. That is all.
Why does the Golf game have a better roster than the Tennis game?

Screw Dry Bowser and Sprixie Princess, I'd trade them both for Birdo, Diddy, Koopa and Kamek.

Fates is a game that lets be honest is doing TOO MUCH to appeal to many audiences.

You have Nohr where the gameplay is much harder and much more similar towards past FE titles while Hoshido is at worst just Awakening reskinned. You have the Phoenix Mode thing that I don't even think casuals would like, so much newer abilities and a better gameplay aspect which hasn't been reached since PoR.

However it's all the extra crap that shows how much is just too much. This game is gonna have the title for 'lewdest FE game in the series' for all the wrong reasons and it just seems forced upon. And don't even blame Awakening for it because it never reached that far. EVER.

Not even until maybe the DLC levels which are optional and even then it's tasteful.

Fates just went full blown crazy with it because they think this what the audience wants when they just want a better story and more gameplay options at most. The girls and guys support marriages are extra and you don't need crazy stuff to show for the fan service. I can ignore Camilla, I can ignore the amie ripoff, I can ignore the garbage supports and story but I can't ignore how much of that was put into the game for every character and how much of it was just pushed instead of it being in the background.

Fates is gonna be good but it's gonna be polarizing as hell and IS should learn from this experience when making FE 15. When SMTxFE looks less anime than FE14, there's a massive problem

Ah, well that oddly makes me less salty about my little bro getting my PSN banned then. :p Because that's the only thing I haven't tried out yet because I prefer not to play fighting games online. But I was actually going to try it out recently.

Which Capcom vs SNK? I mean, the neo geo styled SNK vs Capcom, the first Capcom vs SNK, or Capcom vs SNK 2? Anyone of them counts in my book, but I'm curious.

But yes, I've only gotten into them recently, but I've grown to love them. CVS2 is what got me interested. And now my Mugen is filled with SNK stuff. I love the characters and pixel art and everything. It's a shame the route KoF 14 is going..... But at the same time, I can't really blame them too much given their financial stance. The art in KoF 13 cost them a lot, but I still think it was worth it given how much I love that game. Hopefully KoF 14 at least won't kill them, so they could survive and hopefully recover eventually.

Yeah, the removal of the breast slider was indeed a strange move. The only justification I can only think of was to prevent making a 13 year old looking character (like Lin) to bypass Lin's censorship, which is understandable... but even then, they should've just worked on some restrictions concerning that instead of removing the slider.

I'm gonna be honest, I don't see blatant sexual pandering as mature. It feels like the complete opposite to me.

Most if not all of the complaints I hear regarding KoF12 was the lack of content. Mai aside, I didn't hear much about the lack of fanservice.

I think removing fanservice can only being really potentially damaging to franchises that relied on them in the first place such as Bayonetta. I think FE can get by fine without such pandering IMO
I agree with almost all of that.
Bayonetta doesnt rely on fanservice, but it is prominent; that much is true. Bayonetta the game is a good even without the fanservice as it's a really tight action game. Bayonetta the character is more about tongue in cheek humor, innuendo, and flamboyancy much more so than pure fan service. I mean most of the fanservice is in cut scenes and some boss finishers, so I'd hardly call it a reliance on fanservice.

You should definitely check it out if you havent already. If you get the games on wii u you can just use the costumes and avoid a ton of the fanservice.

To be honest, Bayonetta doesn't actually bother me. I've been thinking of getting the games after hearing so much good about them. The fanservice definitely looks tongue in cheek and doesn't seem like anything making me feel uncomfortable.

And yeah, I think I worded Bayonetta too poorly, I've meant prominence. But you are right, the games does a lot to stand on its own.

I beat like the first five chapters of Awakening (played on hard because regular was kinda too easy, but it was the first couple chapters so lol. wasn't super big on the game but I might try it again) and I have to say Sully is my favorite character.

Say what you will about Fates though, it has online multiplayer, some of the best Amiibo support out there, and is the biggest FE game yet.

Even if you don't like fanservice the game is still going above and beyond in all these other aspects too.

It's not like this is the first time Zelda has been 'sexy'. *Cues Young Link getting smothered by Cremia's busom*
My issue isn't Zelda having sexy stuff. In my honest opinion, I'm a demisexual and even I don't get why people have such an issue with sexual material in games, especially since much of what you find in Nintendo games is still suggestive at most, slightly teasing at least. I'm the kind of person who doesn't see why having a sexual fantasy over a character is "too much" and "weird and creepy", yet fantasising about characters beating each other to bloody pulps is acceptable and fine and not weird at all.

My issue is with Nintendo being A-OK with above average busts in Zelda, which is considered family friendly, yet having the same thing on a PLAYER avatar, in a game that's meant for an older audience, is apparently crossing the line.

NoA are just really hypocritical, that's my only issue.

To be fair, I actually like Aversa's design in Awakening.

She was a manipulative villain, after all. One that used her attractiveness to manipulate others, but she is also shown to have some depth as a character.

She had genuine loyalty for the cause she fought for. When Validar is defeated, you know she's pissed about it and drops her seductive persona in favor of rage.

And then when you recruit her, you find out she was manipulated by Validar all along and shows regret for the atrocities she's done, having lived a life that was itself a lie. It's kind of ironic when you think about it.

Awakening had fanservice and I defended the game. Nothing wrong with some fanservice, but I believe it should be done in moderation, as with everything.

Say what you will about Fates though, it has online multiplayer, some of the best Amiibo support out there, and is the biggest FE game yet.

Even if you don't like fanservice the game is still going above and beyond in all these other aspects too.

Think it's mostly so people don't make underaged looking characters with huge ****.

Aw c'mon, you can't say ****, REALLY?:glare:

I'm okay with fanservice(I know, I know, surprising knowing me.)..... But it has to make sense and in character. If that makes any sense. Unless something is already really, really over the top and anything goes.

Because otherwise it just becomes unattractive, out of place, and just silly.

In other words, yes I am one of those few people that does care about the plot when it comes to porn. :p

That's pretty much what it boils down to for me.

Like, Bayonetta is a very "sexual" character, but she's portrayed as being comfortable with it and proud of it, and it gives her flair.

Similarly, I think it's fine to have characters who don't have sexual personalities, but still have amazing bodies, but they don't really dress in a way that draws too much attention to the fact they have those amazing bodies.

But if I'm playing a game that is otherwise serious and there is just this one character that is blatantly wearing impractical clothing or whatever then yeah it takes me out of it. Like Quiet from MGSV. Yeah I know they give her an "excuse" to wear revealing clothing, but that doesn't change the fact that Kojima did that in a poor attempt to justify what is otherwise, completely out of place fan service and that whole plot point is arbitrary anyway. Plus her entire character is designed for the player character and by extension, the player, to fall in love with her. She's waifu bait, nothing more. She even has a figure with squeezable bust. Like c'mon. It's beyond me why people defend her portrayal as "tasteful".

I think the biggest thing is that people in general can accept fanservice if they are enjoying the work regardless.

It's like Star Wars has ridiculous stuff happen but people accept it because it's fun.

Same kind of thing really.

Sorry I had to do this.

I wouldn't blame Cremia, I'd hug the hell out of him too since he's too damn adorable.

And I'm not surprised why we are in the subject of Fire Emblem's new fanservice direction. That's part of why the new audience was attracted (waifu jokes aside) along with the option of Casual Mode for those who weren't experts at SRPG's.

Sometimes, I feel like the only one who's excited for Genei Ibun Roku #FE. :(

Twas my impression the first time around too. I really liked playing Returns 3DS, though, so maybe I should give it a go again solo. Or I could just finish DKC2, which I already know is fantastic.

I don't mind fan service at all

I mean, some of it is optional anyway

You a bikini costume for example.

If you don't want your immersion broken. don't use it

Honestly, I'd feel more open to cries against all fanservice of one gender if the people decrying all forms of fanservice of one gender weren't hypocrites about it.

The man has a bulge, that's awful. But cleavage is okay.

The woman has cleavage, that's awful. But the bulge is okay.

I mean that kind of stuff just gets to me.
