Despite my strong detraction for Cloud prior to his reveal
I have to admit being very wrong regarding him
While he may not have many ties to Nintendo, as other users noted here, his series does
And while other FF characters would be more suitable in terms of relation to Nintendo
This is more about Final Fantasy rather than Cloud
We all know he is the "emo guy with a big sword from FF" which makes the first thing that comes to mind being FF itself, something the other characters might not do to younger audiences
Besides, he looks ****ing cool and I'm still hoping for Miss Cloud
And if that happens I'm dropping Ganondorf and maining him day one

And that is ultimately the problem with the series now.

Super Smash Brothers is the only crossover where folks want and expect that the game should add content outside of it. You didn't see fans of Marvel vs Capcom asking for DC characters. Or fans of Heroes of the Storm asking for Red Alert characters. But in Smash, asking for Nintendo is seen as a bad thing. The fact that someone who wants the series to focus on Nintendo, the point of the games, is seen as a purist, is telling.

Through out all of this, I have really only seen maybe 2 folks legitimately excited for Cloud, one of which is a friend of mine who loved FF7. Most people are excited about the character only because he is an "icon". They would have been the same had MasterCheif been added. They don't care who the character is so long as its iconic.

There is an old marketing saying "Try and appeal to everyone and appeal to no one." FF fans aren't going to drop their PS4s just to get Cloud in Smash. You can't keep adding outside characters because it gets costly. Of the 26 series in the game, 5 of them are third party. 5 more stages. 5 more sets of music and trophies. I saw someone on Twitter question why he wasn't excited for Cloud. Its hard to get excited when "an icon" has been added 6 times before.

The series succeeded, in part, because it focused on Nintendo. Smash Bros appeal to Nintendo fans. There is no issue adding Nintendo characters because most of your target audience knows who they are. There is this weird assumption we have to have everyone else, and I think it's coming from a fact that these fans can look at the game and say "look at these characters" Cloud honestly looks like a boring character, which is partly why no one is excited for that. I would say I'm a purist. I'm the base. I want the Nintendo crossover to be about Nintendo. Sonic is one of my favorite game characters, but I would not bat an eye if he was cut because he's not suppose to be in Smash. Give me Sonic and Sega All Stars instead (didn't like Ralph in that game either). To put it another way, I don't want mechs and spaceships in avhigh fantasy game. I see nothing wrong with the Nuntendo fighting game being about Nintendo.
Nintendo characters can always be added into the next game. Especially as we are arguably coming down to the 'less of a Nintendo icon and just additional representational for the sake of having it' level with Nintendo characters, 3Rd parties are a great way to keep the hype going (but I've already stated that in my response to you previously!)

It makes sense to focus on 3Rd parties for DLC for a a number of reasons.
Contracts are easier, splitting revenue is easier and they can bring in new customers.

Making a character like 9-Volt for DLC: Who would that appeal to? People who own the game and honestly would probably buy any DLC they throw out.

3Rd parties bring people to the table, even if you don't like it personally. We are the base, but we don't represent the majority of the fanbase.

I seriously doubt most of the 7 million people that bought Smash care about the sanctity of Smash and it being a Nintendo only crossover.

Anyway we can debate this later ;).

Speaking of it, I'm really disappointed with TPHD
This may just be my bias against TP but I don't see much improvement
The lighting is a little better but it's still The Legend of Zelda: Brown and Black
And there is no fixing the overworld

But no worries, we are in good hands
These are some games made by the company in charge of the remake
FB_IMG_14474308072893749.jpg

Truly nothing to worry about

The Game Awards just announced their GOTY nominees.
The Game of the Year nominees are Bloodbourne, Fallout 4, Metal Gear Solid V, Super Mario Maker, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Full list of nominees: http://thegameawards.com/nominees/

Also lol MKX wins by default probably. (not complaining tho)

Are people seriously expecting Master Chief or Steve now?

Sigh.
Not seriously, no. It's more of a thought experiment meant to examine our communal critia of what makes a character Smash worthy.

Some of the choices are overall weird, looking at Best Fighter.

They put up MKX against
- The niche anime fighter (which has a decent chance but come on)
- The game that shut down after only 2-3 months
- The game that's only in an early alpha state

Some impressions:

FFVII is one of the most well known JRPGs of all time, and an argument could probably be made in service of Cloud being the "face" of JRPGs in the same way that Ryu is the "face" of Fighting Games and Pac-Man is the "face" of Arcade games (or video gaming as a medium, even.)

I don't think Cloud breaks any "rules". He's just a little bit distanced from Pac-Man in terms of importance to Nintendo consoles, i.e, he has none. It's not a big deal to me personally, because a ton of gamers grew up with FFVII and FF as a franchise does have links with Nintendo consoles. Final Fantasy III/VI's popularity may have led a lot of Nintendo fans to grab a PS1 specifically to play FFVII - so I don't think Cloud is in any way too distanced from the Nintendo fandom.

So I don't think this makes something totally outlandish like, say, Master Chief very plausible. As one of the very few consistent single-faces of an FPS franchise, I could see an argument where he's the "Face" of FPSs, and he conveniently uses a ton of plasma and lasers, but Halo doesn't really have much overlap with the Nintendo fandom.

Then again, Snake didn't really have any either, but Metal Gear as a franchise is whacky enough until V that Snake still kinda fit with the cast in Brawl. I used to believe otherwise, but watching some playthroughs of the early games again made me realize... yeah, Snake fit pretty well.

We should probably make a list of third party characters and just adequately consider their merits at this point

If each of these companies got a second character for parity (I don't necessary think they should, mind you) I would prefer it to be these choices.

Tails because Sonic and Tails is an iconic duo, possibly close to the level of the Mario Bros, and because Sega doesn't have any really noteworthy characters for Smash besides Sonic characters.

Lloyd because he's perfect he could be a rival to Cloud in a way, the most well-known but not recurring protagonist from a single game in a long-running JRPG series. Also because the Symphonia games are both on the GameCube.

Lara Croft because she's an iconic character and because, if Sakurai decided to budge on the idea, a character that dual wields pistols would be extremely unique.

Simon Belmont because it's history is like 80% Nintendo; he, along with Mega Man is probably the most "Nintendo" non-Nintendo character you could add.

Disclaimer: This is just for fun. I'd like all of these choices but I don't want any to be added solely for parity.

I will say this, if Shovel Knight some how does get in (a prospect I'm not exactly buying at the moment), then all bets are off for future speculation.

He is basically the exact opposite of Cloud. He is from a brand new franchise that was created by a tiny Western studio. He has no legacy but has strong ties to Nintendo.

If both he and Cloud are in, the only real rules for third parties would be: a video game character that appeared on a Nintendo console in some form that is popular.

Yeah that's deserved, glad people are realizing the story wasn't so good.

No Undertale in Best Soundtrack. Why. :ohwell:
That OST is ridiculously catchy.

It HAS to win the best RPG though.

I have a REAL hard time arguing against Simon Belmont (I'm a HUGE Castlevania fan, more then I am a Bomberman fan actually) and Lara Croft (super icon and all), but I really feel like Enix and Hudson should get their own reps.

Might just be bias since I want Bomberman and a DQ character in Smash, but still, those comapanies have their own legacy and history with Nintendo.

Bummer that X is released too late to be nominated. Not that it matters anyways, these award shows are usually silly as ****.

Also, while I personally don't think Master Chief is all that plausible since neither Nintendo's fanbase, nor does Nintendo have any sort of connections to it, it's still actually possible at this point for reasons I had stated in my earlier most, so... I'm prepared for it. He'd be the FPS guy to add.

Considering stuff nowadays undertale will only have a chance on indie category.
I still pretty bummed that Tropical freeze OST was forgotten by everyone.

Fighting category are always a joke, street fighter V will be pitched against othe 3 average joes next year.

If you consider the fact critics nowadays only consider initial impact rather than legacy, makes a bit of sense.

Well Cloud revived the speculation scene and in turn Smash 5 speculation. The possibilities are seemingly endless now.

So one thing to know about me is I like to search "Super Smash Bros." in Google Images within the last 24 hours to try to find interesting pictures.

Tried to do so today but got a no results screen.

:4cloud: broke Google!

Master Chief does have one vital factor in his favor that a lot of FPS characters don't have, an arsenal with a lot of lasers.

I still think Banjo would make it before he did though. Banjo is the icon of the 90's 3D platformer that Mario pioneered before slinking back to the linear power-up based thing of the old games.

Well, this is just for fun, in the event that, yes, we are getting two representatives per corporation, I would choose these fellows.
That being said, part of the reason I passed on Bomberman was because he doesn't feel like a Konami character, because indeed he is really Hudson's character.

Also, I was confused. I had thought Tomb Raider was the Enix franchise absorbed into Square by the merger, but I had it backwards with Dragon Quest.

So everything I have listed here basically checks out, however I could add a single Enix, Microsoft / Rare, Hudson, and Ubisoft rep, and it's easy to guess who those are.

Needless to say, if they had all these characters the third-party cast is literally perfection.

I am very pleased and happy to see Simon Belmont there. He is my #1 most wanted third party character. Castlevania as a franchise deserves representation in Smash.
