You know, I don't have the highest standards when it comes to anime. I do watch a lot of mediocre stuff, but it's for plain fun. Sometimes, a cliché shounen action show can be entertaining.
You know SAO is bad when I found it to be a disappointment. Me, the guy who has low standards and doesn't take entertainment that seriously, found SAO to be crap.
Though I do enjoy it when a show pulls off some intricate and well-written narrative with interesting characters. However, I feel that complaining about every anime not having such kind of depth comes off as elitist.
It's like saying that a video game like Smash Bros. isn't good because it's not "artistic", you know?
This said, I do think that anime could be a more respectable medium and there's a lot of room for improvement in that regard. Video games, for example, are a reference in how a medium can grow to be respectable.
