It's not about whether I would play Ice Climbers or not (I never really used them before, but I have friends who did), the point is that the technically superior game was held back by hardware limitations of a far less powerful system. Nothing about that feels right, and why exactly do you think it's so wrong for a better version of a game that came out later to have more content? That's a common occurrence these days.
Since the specific context for this entire discussion is in regards to the roster, this implies you think the Wii U version would have magically had a lot more characters if the 3DS version didn't exist.
The ONLY characters the 3DS version made the Wii U miss out on were the Ice Climbers and possibly the Chorus Kids. That's it.
Two sets of characters. BOO HOO.

Found a wikpedia list of Microsoft owned franchises.
The most notable ones are:
  • Viva Pinata
  • Age of Empires
  • Zoo Tycoon
  • Wizards and Warriors
  • BattleToads
  • Blue Dragon
  • Crackdown
  • Forza (probably not happening)
  • Project Gotham Racing (also not happening)
  • Quantum Break
  • Conker
  • Fable
  • Gears of War
  • Halo
  • Killer Instinct
  • Infinite Undiscovery
  • Jet Force Gemini
  • Lost Oddysey
  • Max series
  • Kameo
  • Ori
  • Phantom Dust
  • Scale Bound
  • Shadow Run
  • Blinxx

We, as a whole, keep ignoring a lot of Microsofts franchises saying that a different company (that they happen to own) made the ip. It's kinda a pointless differentiation imo. Microsoft owns them so they should be viable candidates of a microsoft fighter or crossover.
You do realize that 90% of us don't recognize more than half the titles here right?:awesome:

Don't act like such a condescending jerk. Literally ANY amount of cut content is a problem when the reasoning is so stupid. And do you really think those are the only characters that the game lost because of the 3DS version? That is laughably naive. The 3DS version ate up a lot of the budget and development time, if it didn't exist then I can gurantee you that the Wii U version would have had a lot more content and probably more characters. I definitely think that if the 3DS version was never a thing, Smash Wii U would have had Mewtwo, Wolf, Lucas, and maybe Roy BEFORE DLC.

Look, we have like, what now, fifty characters? Maybe more if we could DLC? Yep, truly the 3DS held the Wii U back for having such a small roster with all the bells and whistles that it came with. The biggest roster we've had is obviously rendered pointless because of one character. For shame Sakurai.

It ain't that big of a deal when you really think about it. If the 3DS truly withheld the Wii U like everyone said it does, then we shouldn't have the big roster that we do.

Way to put words in someone's mouth that they weren't saying at all, that's really mature and totally not annoying.

I am NOT, saying the game's roster is small or bad, I'm saying the reasoning for cutting a certain character is bad and that the roster could have been even better.

But you guys are going to keep getting on my case for having an opinion and defending the actions of a guy who is over in Japan rolling in money.

You say I'm being laughably naïve and then turn around and guarantee that the Wii U game would have a bunch more characters without the 3DS game existing based on.....absolutely nothing.

Lol, I'm done. This is just too ridiculous to continue.

Everyone needs to simmer down a peg or two. Wouldn't want this escalating further, after all.

Good, you should be done. Your arguments are terrible anyway.

Because we understand that things happen in development, and not everything envisioned can be put into play because turns out game making is really, really hard?
And I'm also stopping this here.

So new topic: What's everyone's opinion on the Nintendo Badge Arcade?

So no Sakurai retweet yet? But lots of interesting potential developments for the direct.

Interesting.

I will say.

I find it hypocritical when people attack the "fan rules."

It's always fun when they get broken, don't get me wrong.

But you guys always fall back on them shortly after.

It's funny to me.
I really dislike the term "fan rule" on this website. To me, most of what people refer to as fan made rules are actually logical conclusions based off of what information is available at the moment. I personally believe that Mii Fighter costumes based off of characters who aren't playable make them really unlikely to become playable. The consolation prize theory if you will. People who don't like this idea will a lot of times hide behind the term fan rule and use it as a means to make people with my belief seem like we're wearing tin foil hats and spouting nonsense, when really it's just us speculating and coming to a conclusion that we can most easily understand given the precedence and information available. It's one of the reasons I rarely share in speculation around here anymore and just keep it in my own head.

Did he retweet for the April 1st direct? At this point, we are bound for new content. Also, the mario maker stage came out on sept 30th right? Given the 45 day gap between smash updates, today puts us at day 43 (44 in Japan). Yupp, somethings happening.

Yeah sorry, that Zoo Tyccoon argument got a bit too heated. :troll:

More like it got derailed badly.

But seriously, I'm just happy with what we got. I miss the IC's too, but I got over it ages ago. I still got some great characters like Mewtwo and Sonic back. :)

Well considering the 3DS version still beats out the superior Wii U version in sales and how much bigger the 3DS install base is, it shows. Plus let's be honest here the 3DS limitations probably did more good than bad.

Transformation characters don't exist anymore and have their own character slot themselves
:4sheik::4zss: Being separated from :4samus:&:4zelda: didn't hurt them and made them each unique without being tied down to each other (Although RIP :pt:)

The much better balancing where it held back some crazy stuff (:4olimar: isn't as BS as his Brawl variant was)

And being the first and great portable Smash. Something which we would have never thought would happen and it did greatly.

Besides what did it hold back, at most was 1-2 characters, a few stages and Smash Run but in return we got a 50-man roster of strong and fun characters, over 45+ stages, multiple modes, expansive online interactions and features, customization and still features a diverse and unique roster of characters aside from the salty trio.

And plus some of those rules (aside from a few stupid ones like patterns) have held up for a long time and were even stated by Sakurai.

He's human and he can change his mind one somethings but NOT everything. He's not some crazy mad man, he's just a developer

I wouldn't mind Steve from Minecraft. He'd get in before a lot of the other indie reps (just saying). Multi billion dollar indie franchise, has a lot of influence of gaming...
...What other game has their own yearly convention?
i would accept minecraft steve over any indie character. my little brother loves that game.
