Looking at your avatar reminded me of how little Mother content is in this game. It seems all Nintendo wants to do is bury that franchise as deep as they can.
:sadsheep:
Yes, and that's why they put EarthBound on the virtual console, because they want everyone to forget about the series.

The thing is, every day it seems like a greater and greater possibility. Think about the facts:

1) Sakurai doesn't care about how popular a franchise is (4 FE reps).
2) The only other character that was playable in Uprising that wasn't Pit or Dark Pit was Magnus, and he's an AT.
3) We still haven't seen any mention of a black Pit color.
4) Dark Pit is on the Palutena illustration (then again, Isabelle was on Villager's and she isn't playable).
5) Easy clone. Even if Dark Pit was meant to be an alt for Pit, Lucina tells us that these alts can easily become their own characters if there are only the slightest differences.

I'm scared.
Honestly, if Dark Pit was going to have his own spot Sakurai would have either revealed him alongside Palutena like he did with Lucina & Robin or would have kept him hidden as a secret character. The way the trailer ended tells me he's either going to be a boss or a full on alt.

And while Lucina did get promoted to being a separate character, she's probably a special case due to her being her own independent character as well as Marth being an rather easy character to clone due to the tipper gimmick. I don't see that happening with Dark Pit because there doesn't seem to be a point in making him play differently from regular Pit.

I don't care about the Items or Smash Run Enemies..they are relatively minor.

What I look at is characters. We have 2, not a big number, 1 stage on Wii U and one stage on 3DS, also not a big deal, all the series will have 1 stage on both versions at the very least.

In regards to Items and Enemies, some series just don't have a lot to pull from and Sakurai could likely more easily port over Kid Icarus Uprising Enemies into Smash Run, saving time since he wouldn't have to create as many new models and Uprising has a lot of potential for items.

It doesn't bother me. I absolutely loved Kid Icarus: Uprising, and I recommend it to everyone.

I don't think the problem is that the items are in the game, it's that we haven't been shown very much from franchises that are a lot more important than Kid Icarus: Uprising. How about instead of making another KI:U update that Sakurai shows us an item or assist trophy from Donkey Kong Country, Star Fox or Kirby instead?
Well, either they are secret or are just incredibly amazing they need to be shown later.

Some more I want to point out for everyone. The other content from other franchises could be unlockable. At the same time, I remember in the character discussion thread, there were people who said we should care more about gameplay then the character itself. Let's bring that logic over here for a moment.

First off the characters.

Pit was in brawl and Palutena is unique. Moving on.

Items. The thing to note about the Kid Icarus Uprising is a very item heavy series. Every weapon and item has a unique effect and that translate quite well to the Smash series as all the item offer something new. Back shield for example...protects you only from behind. That's quite the item right? Drill arm shoots a drill, Ore club shoots a gust of wind. Now someone may bring up Daybreak being similar to Dragoon, but while process may be the same, the end result seems to differ.

Enemies. Another thing to note is that Kid Icarus has a lot of diverse enemies with both unique attack patterns and ways of killing them.

Bumptiy bomb, for example, is very aggressive. However, as the name suggest, it is indeed a bomb, so it will blow up over time. So this provides you with options such as killing it before it explodes, or just trying to avoid it.

Clubberskull. Is perfectly harmless in it's normal state. However, upon being attacked, it transformed into a very powerful monster that does heavy damage. The rewards are great however.

Flage. Is unattackable and invisible until it's ready to attack.

Lethinum. Doesn't attack often, but when it does, it's a powerful laser.

Mimicutie. It's a mimic.

Orne. Instant KO.

Reaper. Most likely won't attack unless in line of sight.

Souflee. Harmless, but fast. If you manage to catch it you are rewarded heavily.

Now, let's just look at the DK series for a bit.

Now, I have no place to talk about it which is why you guys should fill me in. What DK enemies and items should appear in the game? Remember, they should add something unique to the game.

The only thing that come for me is the bee enemy from Donkey Kong Country, and the Rocket barrel. Other then that, we seem to have everything we need from my restricted viewpoint. Yes, we need some more assist trophies, but those will probably come eventually.

Feel free to fill me in on what else the DK series has to offer, (besides K Rool).

Honestly, what would annoy me more is forcing a character, enemy, or item in the game just to satisfy some arbitrary 'deserved representation'.
For instance, Pikmin's great..but all the characters that are possible are either huge, unimportant, or served the exact same role as Capt. Olimar. Yeah, they could use some different Pikmin but at most they'd be semi-clones like Luigi.

That said, I do hope to see some series grow and I suspect that DK will get a 3rd Rep at least with Dixie Kong and maybe a Fourth if K. Rool is brought into it. Metroid's only real possibilities are Ridely or Dark Samus and the latter is out due to Assist Trophy status and anyone before them would seem wrong to most fans. F-Zero characters don't offer much moveset wise, aside from Samurai Goroh, who's an Assist, or Black Shadow, who could take Ganondorf's moveset. Mother is sadly a dead series, as much as I'd love to see Kumatora, since Itoe said there won't be any more games in the series. Yoshi shares too many characters with Mario and any character from that would seem rather forced or be more based on their appearances in Mario series titles (mainly the Baby Bros) or they'd be clones. Wario has potential with Kat & Ana or Capt. Syrup..and had it with Ashley before assist status. and others I'm sure I'm missing.

Point is, I'll take representatives that feel natural over those that feel forced and unnatural.

I don't think they deserved a second character slot, but nothing else seems over done about it.

If you want to see overdone, go and count how many LoZ items are in the game.

The answer is at least 8. that's a lot.

It is of my belief that Kid Icarus: Uprising at the current time is under-represented. I am sure that Dark Pit and another item will resolve that, however.

Well Kid Icarus and Zelda are both games designed around many many items. It makes sense that a lot of them translate well into smash. Same with Mario. Ton of Mario items too.
What I'm saying is I don't think the Zelda items are really over done in comparison to KI though.

It's not just the characters, stages, enemies and items though. The Main Menu has the same style and they've also copied that difficulty scale system from Uprising. In comparison with other franchises it does seem pretty overkill.

the menus have been that style for sakurai's games for a while, really no need to bring it up

but out of sheer curiosity, can you name more stuff that could be added from, say, Pikmin?
Heh.

Characters: Louie, Plasm Wraith, Alph, Charlie, and the President(All of these could work in Smash, but the first 3 are the most likely, even though a second Pikmin character is unlikely in the first place.)

Items: Spicy Spray, Bitter Spray, Bomb Rocks, Brute Knuckles, and Rock Pikmin.

Stages: Forest of Hope, Submerged Castle, Formidable Oak, or basically any iconic area from the series.

Smash Run Enemies: Shouldn't even have to explain this one.

Assist Trophies: Some of the more unlikely Pikmin characters. Like the aforementioned President and Charlie. Some of the enemies would work great as well.

And don't even me started on the music.

/endpikminrant

Anyway, I do think Uprising is getting pretty overrepresented. The fact that it currently has more overall representation then Metroid, Kirby, and Donkey Kong kinda angers me. I'd be slightly more okay with it if there was more stuff pulled from the entire trilogy rather than just one game. At least the bias wouldn't be as...obvious I guess? Hell, I want some Kirby bias at this point.

On a different note, I think "Super Smash Bros. Mario/Pokémon/Zelda" is a terrible argument. They have a lot of representation because they're Nintendo's darn flagship series. They have tons of games, an extremely large amount of sales, and are way, way, way, more popular than any series in Smash.

And I swear if Dark Pit is a newcomer....

The Menu is also the same style as the menus for Kirby Air Ride and Super Smash Bros. Brawl..that's just the style of Menu Sakurai has used in his games since the release of at least Kirby Air Ride.

I heard a rumor, that I didn't fact check on yet, that Sakurai's wife is a Menu Designer, so that could be the reason.

Kid Icarus Uprising was also a Sakurai game and Sakurai is the type to re-use his older ideas in new games..like Subspace Emmisary had alot of elements from Kirby titles in it and Smash Run was directly stated to be inspired by City Trial from Kirby Air Ride.

Sakurai's wife (her name escapes me right now) is indeed the UI and Menu Design lead on a lot of Sakurai's games like the ones you mentioned, but they only married some time after Brawl was finished, I believe.

---------------------

In regards to over-representation in general though, I don't really believe in the concept, especially since people have these imaginary quotas for each individual franchise and they are incredibly biased about it. I honestly didn't mind 8 Pokémon characters being playable in Brawl, and I don't care much for Pokémon.

If something works for Smash pretty easily and Sakurai puts it in on that basis, then I don't see a problem with it. Such is the case for Kid Icarus: Uprising, it just has a lot of stuff that translate perfectly into Smash Bros.

The thing about the characters though is that they pretty much play exactly like Olimar in the Pikmin games. The only way I could see one of Pikmin 3 protagonists be different would be to incorporate that KopPad device, which is iffy. And the Plasm Wraith is pretty hmmmmm.

I think it'd be cool to see the Rock Pikmin as an AT, though. He could play the exact role of Bonsly from Brawl, where you throw him at close range for big damage.

I think there could be more than one playable Pikmin captain if they made it so Olimar only had red, blue, and yellow pikmin, and then Charlie or Alph or Brittany had white, purple, and rock pikmin or something.

I don't know about you, but a lot of the excess Kid Icarus enemies can be replaced by Pokemon. After all, its series sold over 200 million units, and has 5 enemies in Smash Run. This isn't against Kid Icarus, but a general complaint. Where the heck are my Pokemon punching bags?!

The absence of Kasplats, Gnawty, Zingers, Bandineros, or Primapes (who would be an amazing smash run Pokemon) is bewildering in favor of the KI crap

Because Nintendo doesn't want PETA on their case. Again.

We have stuff like Chandelure in Smash Run as they are very surreal, and of course, we have some playable Pokémon characters who are animals, but their designs are so cartoony that I feel they barely resemble their real life counter parts, and characters like Pikachu sort of have to be in the game regardless.

In any case, I just think Nintendo doesn't want people beating up a lot of innocent looking, animal resembling Pokémon in their relatively family friendly fighting game, and to depict Mario beating them up.

And as people pointed out, Uprising enemies are easy to port, as Sakurai can just re-use the same models he used in Uprising.

Kid Icarus? What's that? With all the content it's getting (and with the first two games getting nothing), the full name of the whole franchise should just be Kid Icarus Uprising. Thus, every subsequent title in the series (which who knows when, because it ISN'T that big of a franchise) should first say Kid Icarus Uprising: *Insert Subtitle*.

Metroid and Donkey Kong are in a serious dire of content right now, Sakurai should atleast try to expand their representation, because unlike Pit, they are mascots in gaming.

My problem with Uprising's representation is that it's one freaking game, released less than five years ago. Even Mario doesn't get that much attention, and his items are pulled from numerous games.

Even Kirby, which has five items (Star Rod, Warp Star, Curry, Food, Dragoon) took them from four different games (Adventure, Dream Land 1, Super Star, and Air Ride).

If it was a more established series, I'd be fine with it.

But it's one, ****ing, game.

I'm sorry but I don't see how you could compare KI representation to Pokemon, Mario and Zelda representation.

Kid Icarus: 3 games and only 1 really notable one

Pokemon: Over 100 games, has a tv series, one of the most known gaming franchises in the world, worth over 20 billion
Mario: Mascot franchise of Nintendo, 200+ games, #1 gaming franchise in the world, tv show
Zelda: About 21 games including the 4 spin off, tv show, 70 mil in sales, One of the most recognizable franchises in the world

I think the entire point of Smash Bros just went flying over your head.
I am not sure what you mean, the notion seems subjective. Unless you have a quote from Sakurai or Nintendo that illuminates the precise point of the game, that is. I am not entirely sure why adding extra content to prominent franchises opposes this "point."

I mean that the point of Smash Bros is that it's a big mascot mash-up. Every character is a mascot. Saying Pit isn't while Link and Samus are is just flat out wrong.

This point is not subjective either, it's literally the main selling point of the franchise.

Come on. I liked it, but I didn't like it that much.

And X/Y is so much better. Not in terms of story, but at least I'm actually still playing it.

There you go, twisting my words.

The thing is importance to Nintendo as a whole. Uprising wasn't that good, and it's definitely not important to Nintendo as a whole.

It was not necessarily important to Nintendo as a whole; however, it was important to Sora Ltd. as a whole. Last time I checked, that was the development team. Strange. Could it be coincidence? If you can find a source that asserts that the game must be "good" or "important" to Nintendo, you might be on to something.

...How do you insinuate a turn based game with fairly basic and static exploration elements is less involved than a highly frantic action game (that still has about as much strategy involved as Pokémon does)?

And yes, Uprising is that good. Nintendo doesn't do something really new and different very often. Nintendo doesn't provide a solid, stable online experience that isn't Pokémon, Mario Kart or Mario Sports-game-whatever, very often. Nintendo doesn't allow for charming characters with agency very often (which may hint people as to why Rosalina resonated with me so much as a Mario character). Nintendo doesn't allow for very meaty amounts of dialogue with top-notch voice casting very often. Nintendo doesn't do fully orchestrated soundtracks very often, especially outside of the recent AAA Mario and Zelda titles.

But Uprising had all of these things and more. If you asked me for Nintendo games that prove that everyone at Nintendo doesn't simply milk tired concepts for money, Uprising would be one of them, no questions asked. It also serves as a faint symbol of hope for other seemingly dead franchises, like F-Zero. That they may just get an equally brilliant game one day.

What did it also have? Awkward as hell controls, postmodernist lampshade hanging that was more groan worthy than anything, very little solo replay value that felt like level grinding for what it did have, and above all, (redacted for being totally uncalled-for)

Last time I checked, the game isn't a celebration of Sora. It's a celebration of Nintendo.

I assume that explains why there are twenty plus other non-Sora Ltd. series represented on the main roster and dozens more through other content such as assist trophies, stages, enemies, trophies, etc.

It IS a celebration of Nintendo. A second character and six items does not materially alter that notion.

I don't have a problem with Palutena. It's mostly the items that have got me so worked up, because I don't think even Mario has that many.

Like I said, the enemies from Kid Icarus were probably just easier to port over, saving them time since they didn't have to create so many different character models (granted, I haven't checked if they're using the same models)..and besides that, we haven't seen all of the Enemies in Smash Run yet, its possible there are several we just haven't seen yet.

Regardless, the representation is A LOT better then it was in Subspace Emissary Mode, considering the only non-original enemies were from the Mario series or were Bosses.

None the less, they're just enemies..its not like that matter all that much.

As for Items, its likely that, just coming off of KIU, Sakurai was still thinking about the items he put into that game and how they'd work in Super Smash Bros. as well.

As I said said though, some series just don't have that many viable enemies or items for representation that would be different enough from the others to see inclusion into the game without seeming rather forced.

Sakurai's wife (her name escapes me right now) is indeed the UI and Menu Design lead on a lot of Sakurai's games like the ones you mentioned, but they only married some time after Brawl was finished, I believe.
Ah, I thought so. Maybe they met from her being the UI/Menu Designer on so many of his games or something.

What did it also have? Awkward as hell controls, postmodernist lampshade hanging that was more groan worthy than anything, very little solo replay value that felt like level grinding for what it did have, and above all, a rabid fanbase as mind-numbingly irritating as Bronies.

Last time I checked, the game isn't a celebration of Sora. It's a celebration of Nintendo.
The controls are not "awkward as hell", they merely take some getting used to. If you can play Melee at a high level, Uprising should be a breeze for you. Even if not, it again, just takes getting used to.

If you are against the fourth wall breaking and what not in Uprising, that's just you being dry. It's gags were extremely well written, with lines of dialogue that really hit the mark in a snappy fashion.

The game has an immense amount of solo replay value that is no more or less grindy than the Challenges grid in Brawl, which will likely be returning for Smash 4. And if you can handle unlocking Mewtwo (who I notice is your main in Melee), then you can handle any "grind" Uprising throws at you.

And a game's fanbase has nothing to do with how fun the game itself is, especially when the online mode has no anonymous voice chat, and therefore, you are never exposed to this fanbase while playing the game. Plus, pretty much anyone in the Uprising fanbase is also in the Smash fanbase, and then the Smash fanbase has it's own share of bad eggs outside of Uprising fans. Soooo I guess Smashboards is hell for you!

And last time I checked, Sora has contributed a ton to Nintendo. And Sora is contributing a ton to Smash 4. Of course anything they make is going to be pretty prominent in Nintendo celebration. Iwata and Sakurai may as well be gay lovers, they are that close.

I don't really care. KI:U items are pretty much Smash items in spirit and functionality, anyway. If they were going to dump items from any one game, I'd prefer it be KI:U.

I think I was getting a little ahead of myself there. Meaning I was getting too angry to think right.

I misremembered the controls. It's been that long since I played last.

By grinding, I mean hearts. About 95% of my time playing KIU was replaying Stage 1 on difficulty 9 over and over again because that was the only way to efficiently get hearts.

I unlocked Mewtwo by leaving the GameCube on during school and overnight.

And I apologize for lashing out against the fanbase. It's just... Enough is enough, you know? I didn't enjoy it that much personally (To me, it was good, but not perfect), so it's kind of irritating constantly hearing how it's as heavenly as Palutena herself.

I swear I'm the only person who thought that KI:U's controls were comfortable (no hand cramps here!) and innovative. No matter how many reviews and opinions I hear, it's always the same; "I couldn't bring myself to playing anything past the first few chapters because my hand was bleeding hurt a lot".

But anyway, I picked "OVERKILL". Because it is, really. I don't care if Sakurai made Uprising. I don't care if he makes Smash Bros and can do whatever the heck he wants. I don't even care that Kid Icarus: Uprising is one of my favourite games of all time. None of that changes the oversaturation. I like Pit's new special attacks a lot and I think they were good picks both to show what Pit can do and to vary up his moveset (Angel Ring sux lawl). It's mainly the items that bother me, despite being a competitive player. Those and just the lack of things taken from the first two games other than Pit and Palutena themselves. Could we maybe have Medusa appear as an assist trophy? Or perhaps Hewdraw as stage boss on Palutena's Temple? Why did both Kid Icarus ATs have to be characters who only appeared in Uprising? Besides, it's not like Uprising retconned the original game out of existence (it actually makes a LOT of references to the first game infact), though it might have done so for Of Myths and Monsters. But I'm not sure on that one.

Klaptraps

Can't be attacked from the front by physical attacks and will sometimes even jump in the air and attack

Kutlass

Swing their sword so hard they get stuck in the ground, they also have been known to counter attack those that attack them.

Koindozer

Pushes opponents by ramming into them with their shield and will even point it's shield up if you try to attack from above or land on it. The shield also protects them of course.

Mini-Neckies

Fire coconuts from their mouths and swoop in on opponents.

Bazuka

Fire barrel items from their cannons.

Army

These guys roll in a ball and try to run into you but even if you dodge them they will follow you. When hit while in ball form, they go back to standing on 4 legs.

Fish Poker Pops

A big enemy that cannot be hurt by attacks to the head and has a giant pufferfish stick he tries to slam into you. When he raises it up to slam it down is the best time to attack it.

Firehead Neds

These guys move around in their cart but they will also extend their neck greatly and try to shoot fireballs at you.

Ack

These guys stack up on top of each other and try take a bit out of you as the fall down in unison.
