Wizard (the guy running EVO) got something from Nintendo that they reversed their decision after all the negative press from every major gaming outlet.

Earlier today, Nintendo told EVO NOT to stream Melee at the tournament this weekend. This caused a big stink and the power of social media got them to retract their decision in less than five hours. Everything is back on schedule.

I saw a comment on Facebook that raised an interesting theory.

What if this whole thing was actually a publicity stunt? To see how serious fans were about Melee being at EVO, they pulled the plug as a test of faith for the fans? If so, Nintendo truly is a troll company.

Brawl is already black balled by all major tournament organizations, and now it looks Melee is black balled, too. This will happen with Smash WiiU and 3DS... probably immediately.

Unless I'm mistaken, I remember you saying that you wanted to play that competitively. Well, good luck getting livestreams for that, which hurts the community growth, hurts the community interaction, and actually hurts Nintendo.

Saying certain things could happen (I'm not saying they will) doesn't mean I'm wrong or right, but that, because of this, it is very possible. The thing that scares me is summed up by this: I don't know what they will do; you don't know what they will do. Instead of stopping this months in advance, Nintendo waited until literally the Majora's Mask 72 hours started. What's next=??? Does Nintendo go down a downward spiral, or is this it=??? Anything is possible.

Brawl is black balled by tournaments because it's a crappy competitive game that has a built in variable in tripping that cannot be controlled and could potentially alter the outcome of a match. Couple that with some of the other complaints we've been hearing about since 2008 and it's no wonder people prefer to forego the game, especially when there is a more viable alternative in Melee.

Nintendo isn't hurting community growth as much as they are showing their continued incompetence regarding digital media. The fact that you're referencing a fictional cataclysmic event just proves that you are taking this discussion from logical discourse to emotional pragmatism. While it is never wrong to consider the ramifications of certain decisions -- especially from a company with a record of falling into the same pitfalls -- to take that to the point of saying "the competitive EVO community will die" is an absolute overreaction. Of course I cannot tell you what will happen, how can I? Believe me when I say there are a lot of marketing directors within Nintendo right now who would love nothing more than to fix this situation, but it's not their call. We will have to see what comes of all of this in the coming days. Biting people's heads off and acting like Chicken Little does no one any good, and only serves to make you look poorly.

If there is one thing that I have missed from the old sprite based FE games is the sick animations.
Myrmidon critical animations were so beautiful to watch. Now we just get a gif strip close up of the character and they do the same attack.

1. I said if this stood it would probably kill Smash at the large fighting game tournaments and from things like EVO and MLG forever. Now, since we won, I think the inverse is true, thanks to the power of media!
2. The other stuff could still happen. Quite frankly, ever since the Xbox One reveal (and kinda sorta the Patriot Law passing), this crap scares me. I merely entertained the possibility of such extreme stuff happening based on what had happened that Nintendo did in the past. I like to talk about all of the possibilities, and discuss all of them. I'm not an inclusive person like that; this is just how my brain works
3. This shows something of a disorganization at Nintendo and a disconnect with their fans and what is socially acceptable.
4. Your first post was right; it shows their incompetence and scattered business model in motion.
5. We won, so yeah! Smash WiiU and 3DS will be all the better competitively and livestreaming for all of this!!!
