Even if Ridley is confirmed... :troll:

Speaking of Pikachu owning Ridley, what two characters do you guys hope can be put against or with each other in Smash Bros?

For me:
- Mewtwo vs Lucario
- Sonic vs Megaman
- Quote vs Megaman
- Ridley vs Bowser
- Victini vs Anyone :troll:

I grew up with Toad (SMB2 was one of my favorite Mario games as a kid) and I don't want him playable.
That's because you're special.
You're the one overly reading into it.
You cannot be serious. How am I reading into something that was stated by Iwata during a Nintendo Direct, in the context of what was being discussed; and something that is attached to Luigi's profile? You're the one basing your argument off a supposition that operates on less evidence than what I've expressed. It's not like we all didn't think Luigi was going to be revealed in part of the Year of Luigi theme anyways.

The funniest thing of all is I'd be fine with your point if you just responded and left it at that, but the fact that you're arguing against something that is plainly obvious and completely miss the point in your last sentence show there is no discussion to be had.
Honestly I'd more excited about the new Smash if I would ever be willing to trade my dignity for a Wii U/3DS.

still, it's definitely something i enjoy talking about with you guys.
Wait, what?

Honestly, the people who doubted Toon Link are pretty stupid.

Sakurai has flat out said that he sees the child Link as the "true Link."

Also, Sakurai loves his cartoony characters.
Wind Waker HD graphics would be cool :(
I'm pretty sure that Toon Link's model is somewhat imported from that game.

Actually, Wind Waker HD reuses the models from Wind Waker.

I believe they imported the Brawl model.
They have most definitely imported the Brawl models for most veterans (Samus being the obvious exception.) Toon Link is obviously an edited version of his Brawl self.

Has anyone seen John Knight's reaction to this yet?
I had the first reaction, then Smash Boards didn't load, so I made the second reaction instead. :shades:
Outside this thread?

Did he say or do anything notable relating to Toon Link on any other threads?

If he hasn't, then the answer to this question would be a yes from me.
All I said is the picture in my avatar looks like a new pose, which could signify he has more moves based on the Wind Waker. Man I would love to see Toon Link fight in smash like he did in the Wind Waker, all aggressive with lots of movement and stuff! It would be fan-freaking-TASTIC!!!

I'm sure there was definitely some sort of collaboration regarding the model used between Sakurai and co and the team behind the Wind Waker HD.

They probably imported the previous models and improved them with new textures and higher polygon count to match HD visuals.

Guys, I swear to Buddha that we will soon see a 3DS pic with Toon Link and Conductor Link together on Spirit Tracks. That'll be a way of Sakurai saying "**** YOU NONBELIEVERS!"

Is it just me or is half of Smashboards practically crying with joy over Toon Link and the other half is seething with rage? I wasn't expecting this reaction at all.
I kinda was. I mean, Toon Link is probably one of the few "true clones" in Brawl, so a lot of the anti-clone people see this as a waste of a character slot. There are also a lot of people who(still) think that veteran reveals are a waste, and that it's especially a waste to show off a character like Toon Link.

I still don't understand why everyone is excited for Toon Link, it's just an excuse to make Link terrible in my eyes.
Not really. I mean, people got excited to see Falco even though Fox was fairly decent in Brawl. We just love the movesets, skillsets, and playstyles, and how we use them when we play as them.

Link was bad in Smash 64, and Young Link and Toon Link weren't in that game.

Also, that pose in my avatar... it appears as if Toon Link will have a new style, maybe with new moves from THE WIND WAKER!!!
Do people really think Link is bad because of Toon Link?
People are probably the dumbest creatures alive.
This update certainly shuffled the deck for me. I have no idea what to expect now as far as characters go
Ridley, K. Rool, Little Mac, Miis, Pac-Man.

Talk to me in 18 months when at least 4 of those 5 are playable.

Can't say I'm surprised. He is still a pretty divisive character... Dem clone nazis.

i meant that im not that much of a nintendo sheep to buy a wii u/3ds, even for a new smash, but i still like discussing it with people.
I understand that -- goodness knows I had fun speculating about Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 long before I had access to a PS3.

I'm surprised by the adulation. Not something I expected. Somehow I feel the joy is less about Toon Link and more about the hope that there won't be many, if any, roster cuts. And Ridley.

I don't get the Toon Link hate. I mean, you don't see Luigi garnering any hate, and he's not a heck of a lot more original than Toon Link. Sure, in Brawl he had less borrowed moves, but his playstyle and statistical data (weight, jumping ability, movement, speed, etc) is extremely similar to Mario's data.

Meanwhile, Toon Link's statistical data is generally the complete opposite of Link. I just think a lot of it is stupid Link fanboys who are mad Link sucks in every game (well, I guess not too badly in the Japanese Smash 64 or Melee), and are taking it out on Toon Link.

Also, like I said before, just having veterans return is about 4 times less expensive, time consuming, requires less balancing and move fixing (ie: frame data, strengths and weaknesses, especially for a fairly balanced character like Toon Link), and intrusive than adding new characters. Thus, returning as many veterans as possible is the cheapest, most logistical, and obviously the best route to go if you want the most possibly playable characters.

It's more like Dr. Mario and Mario rather then Mario and Luigi

Or even more accurately Paper Mario and Mario

you act like people's distaste for clone characters isn't justified
Distaste for clones is justified, I agree.

But the point isn't that. Being a clone isn't a fault of the character, but of the game designer (in this case, Sakurai). The solution isn't to cut the character, but to luigify them.

Yet, we see many more posts demanding the former.

Rumor mill is churning that Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze might be delayed into next year. On the one hand, that stinks; but at the same time that relieves my wallet.

This is why I wasn't very excited really... We're getting the exact same thing we already got before... Such a waste of potential.
Why is the Spin Attack or Bow and Arrow returning so bad=???

I mean, I think the Fire Arrow should be there instead, but c'mon! The Spin Attack is too much of a signature move to cut, just like the swordplant or reverse swordplant are too much of a "(Toon) Link signature" to remove. The same goes for Luigi (and Mario) and their up B (Jump Attack) and neutral B (fireballs).
tourney*** pls go
Really=??? You are saying that on the home of competitive smash brothers=???

Where most of the users who post here in the Smash 64, Melee, and Brawl boards are from predominately competitive players=???

Also, it doesn't take a tournament player to know that Link sucks in Brawl. He's slow, sluggish, and his recovery is terrible for Melee, let alone Brawl.

Probably because, historically, Luigi WAS a clone for the early Mario games sans SMB2. Toon Link probably gets hate because of the artstyle in which case, they should be fed to bears, and I don't mean me.

On the topic of importing models, I don't if that's how it works, especially considering that there was a gigantic resolution jump from the Wii to WiiU. If any models were imported, it was to the 3DS. IIRC, Sakurai said something once how the characters are all remade from scratch every game.

As for the use of Brawl assets, this could have been something like coding, information for frame data, etc., but not necessarily models.

tourney*** pls go
What? We have to be "tourneyfags" to say a character sucks?

Back to Toad quick, upon doing some intense research, holy crap Toad has potential. He can actually do a lot of cool things if you look into him very far, I just have this feeling they wouldn't want to reference things so old or obscure, I dunno.
Problem is that any Mario Party/Kart/sports titles character can do most of those moves.

If Toad has more expanded originality in him that branches off from what started in SMB2, then he could definitely become a unique character that does quite a few things other characters can't do, but as it stands, eh, I'm very doubtful on that proposition.
I grew up with Toad (SMB2 was one of my favorite Mario games as a kid) and I don't want him playable.
Same here, unless Sakurai has some crazy as hell ideas for him (see: the Villager, the Wii Fit Trainer, Zero Suit Samus the Ice Climbers, and Captain Falcon).

That or Toad should finally gets some original (exclusive) moves before he ever becomes a playable character.

You know nothing of Paper Mario do you? :p
By "More accurately" I mean that people see Paper Mario as his own separate character, yet others as "Just another Mario" told in a different format

However, unlike Toon Link (Only recently) there is no canonical evidence to back either up

Edit: Also, did you just admit that Toon Link couldn't be as different from Link as Paper Mario could be to Mario? 'Cause that's what it looked like you just did

The timeline was already destroyed when OOT Link and Young Link fought each other in Melee.
It's non-canon, but still.

-----
I've heard the Young Link in Melee is the Majora's Mask Link from the Child Link timeline (because the Young Link in OoT doesn't use arrows) and the Adult Link is the Adult Time Line Link.
Honestly, the people who doubted Toon Link are pretty stupid...

I agree, everyone has their own definition of the perfect smash game.
Clones, Luigi-fied Clones or no clones at all, we all want SSB4 to be the best game it has the potential to be.

- Bodes well for Lucario and Ike: One thing to take away from this is that a character won't be replaced/cut just because don't have a most recent appearance. Keep in mind that development for a A Link Between Two Worlds started in 2011, so Sakurai clearly must have known of Classic Link's return in time to decide whenever or not he would be in. Ultimately, Toon Link was chosen. This is good for Lucario and Ike because it means that they won't get replaced because they aren't from the most recent generation/most recent Lord.
Wind Waker HD... SERIOUSLY. Toon Link, Ike, and Lucario aren't really in the same situation. While link between worlds link is the most recent, WWHD is still very recent so that's hardly comparable to a guy who hasn't gotten any games starring him at all recently. Not saying they won't get in but this means absolutely nothing for their chances.

I say he should be a lightning grappler with high flying techniques. He could be the game's lucha libre character. Technically speaking, we already have the kung-fu fighter (Lucario, but he needs to be more interesting) and the dance fighter (Wii Fit Trainer).

Yeah, Toon Link looked a little weird in Brawl because he was meant to have a cel-shaded art style. He looks more "toonish" now, while still having small details on his model like in Brawl.

Welcome to Smashboards.

This .
On the topic of importing models, I don't if that's how it works, especially considering that there was a gigantic resolution jump from the Wii to WiiU.
I was more referencing Toon Link's model in Smash Wii U and the Wind Waker HD maybe being a collaborative effort, or Sakurai got part of the data from it from the Zelda crew, similar to what was done with all the Zelda characters' models being borrowed from Twilight Princess in Brawl (sans Toon Link of course).
If any models were imported, it was to the 3DS.
They were imported to the 3DS.
As for the use of Brawl assets, this could have been something like coding, information for frame data, etc., but not necessarily models.
Models, no (sans Smash 3DS). But the coding, frame data, and obviously the moveset are frequently transferred. Plus, it is a lot easier and less time consuming to just "redo" or "slightly change" a character than to make one from scratch.
