Bayonetta's data was added to the game 2 weeks into the Ballot, and this was only discovered recently, which is why it's become a more popular topic of discussion lately.

The Japanese Ballot page also said that the results would be used for future games, so it seems likely that Bayonetta was picked early on in the Ballot, and then the characters who were near the top when the Ballot ended are being referenced now for Ultimate.

Also, I saw someone mention earlier that Sakurai hinted at Bayonetta before her reveal, which I remember too. He definitely said "climax" as a reference to Bayonetta. Therefore, I don't think it's too farfetched to think that things like the Rathalos screenshot being tweeted by him or the Skull Kid chairs are potentially hints.

Let us take a look at this.

The most wanted front-runners are Isaac, Geno and Skull Kid.

Isaac and Skull Kid are both former AT.

40 of them have been shown off.

If any of these select few are going to be Echos it will be Isabelle and Shadow.

Knuckles took Shadow's place
Kapp'n took Isabelle's place

We have not seen anything related to Skull Kid or Isaac yet. Moon is the Skull Kid replacement.
Which could mean
A) Skull Kid will be playable
B) Skull Kid will be a boss

I feel like if they were going to AT Skull Kid they would have grouped him with the moon.

Next big contender is Isaac.

Right now, I want Isaac badly, however, I feel like 85% chance he will be an AT again, 50% he will be a fighter and 20% we will get no Golden Sun representation.

Next is Geno
We have not seen anything related to Geno. Sakurai knows this is a high demand by giving us a Mii fighter outfit. (I am not counting the Majora's Mask since it's not a full Skull Kid outfit)
Which could mean
A) Geno will be playable
B) Geno will not be in Smash

So the big are out of the way, let us look at the rest of the AT chances

We have 40 AT atm. 50 total AT will be a nice number

So if we are not going to get any new surprises and Sakurai is going to pick 10 of the yet to be confirmed.

That is true, too. It might be too soon to make any calls. The Rathalos pic really could just be a screenshot Sakurai liked, or a hint towards some MH stage or character or something. It's fun to speculate though, and after years of having almost nothing to hold on to for concrete hope, it feels good to finally have one thing.

Second only to K. Rool? If this is accurate, it's a really impressive result for Isaac. It would put us in a better position than even Geno, and lend some credibility to the fact that he could be the next reveal after K. Rool and that he might be hinted at.

I seem to remember Nintendo/Sakurai using the word 'climax' when promoting that final DLC presentation, not just immediately before revealing Bayonetta. No one thought twice about it until after the presentation when retrospect kicked in. But I've no proof and I don't know where I'd begin to look, so I guess you'd better take this claim with a grain of salt.

Just going to chime in here, don't forget that during the first Ultimate presentation during E3, after Sakurai introduced himself and talked about Smash for Switch, "The End" popped onto the screen before he continued the presentation.

A lot of us K. Rool fan's thought it was a clear reference to K. Rools famous first boss fight where at the end of the fake credits it says "The End?" Before he jumps up from playing dead and the battle continues. Now that K. Rool was revealed I feel that was the intention. He absolutely throws clues out there.
