All of the starter Pokemon are arguably the most important Pokemon in the entire franchise...
I made the same thread nearly a year ago that got quite a bit of discussion, but now that almost everyone is familiar with the new Gen 5 starters, I thought it was time to bring back the topic that's always fun to talk about; which gen has the best starters? Or even more controversial; who has THE best starter line of the 15?
The thread is made for general discussion on starters, so feel free to answer any of the following questions below or just discuss them in general. REMEMBER base your opinions off of looks, originality, names, how fun they are to use, etc. DO NOT base this purely off of base stats and movepools. Take that to the Battle Tower.
SOME QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT WANT TO ANSWER (my opinions included)
Who has the best water starter line? (Mudkip)
Who has the worst water starter line? (Oshawott)
Who has the best fire starter line? (Charmander)
Who has the worst fire starter line? (Chimchar)
Who has the best grass starter line? (Turtwig)
Who has the worst grass starter line? (Chikorita)
Who is the best 1st form? (Snivy)
Who is the worst 1st form? (Chikorita)
Who is the best 2nd form? (Combusken)
Who is the worst 2nd form? (Chaobuu)
Who is the best 3rd form? (Charizard)
Who is the worst 3rd form? (Meganium)
Which gen. had the best starters? (1st)
Which gen. had the worst? (5th)
Who has the best starter line, overall? (Charmander)
Who has the worst starter line, overall? (Chikorita)
GEN 1
Charmander-Charmeleon-Charizard
Bulbasaur-Ivysaur-Venusaur
Squirtle-Wartortle-Blastoise
These guys will always be the best group of starters in my eyes. Yeah they get major nostalgia points but 4 generations later I still feel like Charizard, Venusaur, and Blastioise still dominate the rest of the competition in the bad*** category. And all of the 1st forms are arguably still the cutest. All 3 in this group had cool concepts, great names, simple yet awesome designs, and most importantly, they were all fun to use. Charizard is still my (and many others) favorite Pokemon to this day. No more explanation needed.
GEN 2
Cyndaquil-Quilava-Typhlosion
Chikorita-Bayleef-Meganium
Totodile-Croconaw-Feraligatr
I don't care what anyone says Chikorita has THE worst starter line out of all the others. Every starter minus Meganium is bad*** in some way, but somehow Meganium failed in that category. Plus I STILL don't know wtf it is to this day. The whole line is just flat out boring in almost every aspect. The Cyndaquil line is pretty cool, but Typhlosion was a step down from Charizard in my opinion. The Totodile line keeps this group from being the absolute worst for me. Croconaw has the coolest design of any of the 2nd form Water starters for sure. I love the caveman look it has (I always imagine it with a club). These guys had a lot to live up to after Gen 1, and they managed to fall quite short, which is why I'd rate these guys 4th place out of the 5 generations we've had.
GEN 3
Torchic-Combusken-Blaziken
Treecko-Grovyle-Sceptile
Mudkip-Marshtomp-Swampert
If any group comes close to topping Gen 1's starters, it's this one. Mudkip is Mudkip. Nuff said. Swampert has a very useful and cool typing that made me love it when I first used it. Arguably my favorite Water starter line. Sceptile was the first speedy Grass Pokemon we had, so it was a very welcome addition. But the cream of the crop for this group is undoubtedly the Torchic line. When I first played Ruby I didn't know what to expect from Torchic when it evolved. When I saw Combusken the bad*** chicken for the first time, I freaked out. I thought it was the coolest Pokemon I had seen, and then I found out it was also Fighting type? Can you say awesome? Blaziken undoubtedly rivals Charizard for the role of my favorite starter of all time. Almost everything about all 3 lines was awesome, which is why I rate them as a close 2nd behind Gen 1.
GEN 4
Chimchar-Monferno-Infernape
Turtwig-Grotle-Torterra
Piplup-Prinplup-Empoleon
"Wait they made the Fire starter Fire/Fighting again??" Yeah my initial reaction when I saw Infernape for the first time. I've hated the Chimchar line with a passion ever since. And I've always thought Infernape is a pretty ugly Pokemon. But then I saw the awesomeness that is Torterra, my favorite Grass starter. I think design-wise Torterra looks very cool. A huge bad*** earth turtle. I also fell in love with the Grass and Ground type combination. I thought Piplup was meh, but Empoleon was like "Wooooah." The Water/Steel typing really does it for me. Plus it's a penguin, and penguins are awesome. Despite the coolness of the Piplup and Turtwig line, Infernape drags this group down which is why I rate it the 3rd best of the 5 generations.
GEN 5
Tepig-Chaobuu-Enbuoo
Snivy-Janobii-Jarooda
Oshawott-Futachimaru-Daikenki
When I saw all of the 1st forms for the first time, I had HUUUGE expectations for their final forms. Oshawott is the cutest starter we've had just because of its awkwardness. Everyone knows how popular Snivy "Smugleaf" was when he was first released. And Tepig gave many of us hopes that we were finally going to get a Fire starter that was more on the defensive side, and maybe even be a Dark type! Then the worst thing imaginable happened; we saw the evolutions. Snivy ended up having the best line of the 3, but Jarooda is still pretty "meh" in my opinion in terms of its design. Oshawott has the only line out of all 15 that I just don't understand. Otter > Otter > Narwhal??? Daikenki makes NO SENSE to me whatsoever. It's a pretty cool looking Pokemon, but the fact that it's a narwhal that evolved from an otter really bothers me. It barely resembles Futachimaru at all. And about Tepig... ANOTHER FIRE/FIGHTING WHAT THE **** DUDE WHERE'S THE ORIGINALITY GAMEFREAK? And Chaobuu is one of the ugliest Pokemon I've seen, easily. At east Enbuoo looks pretty cool... Unfortunately, it looks like the newest set of starters aren't only the newest, but the worst of the 5.
HAVE FUN!
