You don't need to buy any game. Steam is free. I think most people play either Left 4 Dead 2 or Hat..I mean Team Fortress 2. But rly, you don't need to buy anything.

Edit: you need some game to be able to join groups and add friends, there are some games 5 bucks and below though

Why do we need to buy a cheap game just to be able to chat on the SSB64 steam group? I find that really ridiculous, they should just charge for the client with "full capabilities" if they are that much money-hunger instead of offering something "free" that isn't no more...

Oh well I could hardly arrange a p2p match there anyway with everyone busy playing left 4 dead 2 xP.
