New here, found this
Hey /v/. I have a friend who’s working on the translation work of Super Smash Brothers. Lately he’s been working long nights there translating trophy descriptions. They want SSB4 to have a worldwide simultaneous release, but since they’re still working on trophies, which have long descriptions, the translation has apparently been a nightmare. Like I said, he’s been busy with work, and when I was finally able to hang out with him on an off day, he told me some very interesting information about SSB4 that I figured you guys would like to hear, including the newcomers.First thing is that Character Transformations (Zero Suit Samus, Sheik, Pokemon Trainer’s Pokemon, etc.) have a new mechanic. From the options menu, you can toggle whether or not you want a character’s transformations both selectable from the menu, and if a character can transform in mid combat into another. When disabled, the B-Down for Zelda and Pokemon is replaced with a generic kicking move, and Samus’s final smashes simply don’t change her. Because of this, as well as some tech difficulties with the 3DS, none of the character transformations like ZSS or Sheik (and a newcomer) are ready to be revealed yet. Also because of this new mechanic, the Pokemon Trainer’s stamina thing has been removed.
Next is a new Pokeball mechanic. Very rarely, you’ll get a Shiny Pokemon from a Pokeball. Not only will it be more powerful, but it’ll leave behind a shiny Pokemon trophy of it’s respective species. Very rare, and very minor, but a neat thing.
Next, stages. There are some pretty fun ones this game, and he told me a few. City Trial (Wii U) is based off of the Kirby Air Ride mode. It’s apparently a big stage (New Pork City) but it drops neat power ups that alter your character’s stats. It can make your character lighter, heavier, faster, etc. Caps at 9 power ups, and they all are removed when you die.
Park (3DS) is based off of Chibi-Robo Park Patrol. The game looks at what color your Main Mii is, and fills the park with flowers of that color. It’s a fairly plain floating stage stage, but still fun.
Sunset Shore (3DS) is based off of the iconic Donkey Kong Country Returns stage. It’s a run-off stage, but the sillhouettes of all the characters are apparently very amazing. Was originally going to be revealed along with Diddy Kong, but their apparently not satisfied with it yet.
Fossil Arena (3DS) is based off of the Fossil Fighters games. It’s meant to replace the ‘Pokemon Stadium’ for the 3DS. Dinosaurs will occasionally barge through your battle and fight. Apparently it has Robot Dinosaurs too.
Baby Bowser’s Castle (Wii U) is the visually pleasing stage for the Wii U. All the visuals are hand drawn, and crafted to be 3DS. It apparently looks very amazing in motion. Baby Bowser will slowly approach from the distance, so you and your opponent will have to hit balloons that’ll throw eggs at him. If he comes to close, he’ll OHKO everyone, and run all the way to the back to try again.
Final Stage he told me is Big Squiddy Caves (3DS). Based off of the Starfy game, since it’s underwater, all the physics are lighter. A giant squid will try to hit you with his tentacles, but you can hit them to make him go away. Apparently, when you summon the Starfy assist on this stage, he’ll actually swim and hit his opponents as opposed to get hit.
And finally, what you guys probably want to know, the Characters. First thing, all of Brawl’s veterans are returning, since they’re easy to import into SSB4’s engine(Aside from the whole Transformation thing being a pain). And yes, even Snake. Really the only reason he’s returning is because Kojima and Sakurai are really close. Since they’re close, and Konami and Nintendo are still on fairly good relations with each other, Snake was able to return. Also, Mewtwo is returning.
Now, newcomers. First is Dixie Kong. Thanks to Retro’s DKC revival, Sakurai has reason to give DKC much bigger representation, since apparently he’s a big fan of the series. Dixie Kong is a transformation (They tag team each other, though the other disappears and won’t be in the background) of Diddy Kong. Like stated earlier though, none of the character transformations are ready to be shown yet. She was originally going to be revealed in the last Nintendo Direct, but since she wasn’t ready, they just revealed Little Mac instead, since Iwata really wanted to reveal a newcomer.
Next is King K. Rool. Like above, DKC’s revival let Sakurai add more characters. A bit odd, considering all the Kremlings have in DKCR is one easter egg cameo in TF, but Sakurai really likes the series. Like Wario, he has two costumes; His normal King attair, or his Captain’s clothing. His moveset is the same though.
Ridley is both a character and a stage hazard. Since Other M’s Ridley was a clone, that Ridley will be the Stage Hazard of the Pyrosphere stage, and normal Ridley will be the character. Sakurai knows how much the west wants him, and plans to fake you guys out for his reveal by showing the Stage Hazard Ridley first as a Miiverse picture. He apparently plays similarly to Charizard.
Isaac from Golden Sun is a character. Apparently him and Starfy were considered at the same time, and they decided to cut both of them, but at the last second they decided to keep Isaac and keep Starfy to Assist Trophy.
Shulk from Xenoblade Chronicles is a character. My friend hasn’t really seen nor heard about his moveset though, so he didn’t say much on him.
Anna from Fire Emblem, more specifically her Awakening appearance. They originally were going to put Chrom as a character, but Sakurai felt 3 Blue lords would be overkill, and it might make people uninterested about Fire Emblem, which he felt went against one of the purposes of Smash Bros. So Intelligent Systems suggested Anna, and Sakurai loved the idea (He wanted more female characters in this game). Her moveset is really fast but surprisingly heavy, with a mix of magic swords and money bags.
Palutena from Kid Icarus will be a character. Apparently she’s what you expect, though a fun easter egg is if you have her and pit in a match, and she wins, her victory screen has her cuddling and teasing Pit, with both of them light hearted and happy, and Pit congratulating her.
Ray 01 and Chibi Robo will be characters, with Chibi’s apparently focusing on household items. They’re planned to share a reveal, making a ‘Chibi-Custom-Robo’.
And the final character is one I really think you guys will be surprised at. It’s the fourth Third Party character, and he’s Jack Frost, from Shin Megami Tensai. Atlus and Nintendo have been on very good terms, and after some talk, Nintendo let Atlus add Frost to the game. Due to the whole Atlus situation that I know you guys know about, it was looking really bleak if he’d make it. Thankfully though, it all ended up well (Same with the Fire Emblem -x- SMT project, that’s also still in progress apparently). Mega Man is meant to be the Third Party rep to appeal to Western Gamers, while Jack Frost will be the one to appeal to Eastern Gamers. One thing my friend told me is due to the nature of the SMT series, they’ve had to be very careful with what gets a trophy for that series, since they want SSBIV to get at most a T rating in America, and the equivilant around the world. He told me the unfortunate news that a Mara trophy was one of the first to be put off the table.
Anyways, there you go guys. That’s everything he told me. In short, SSB4 will have new fun stages, and a total of 14 newcomers.
What do you think?
