A rough translation of sakurai's tweet is about a 7 o clock nintendo direct, and he is sort of exclaiming that it will be early.

On Miiverse*, which as discussed is not an accurate measurement by any means. However, this is not the place nor the proper topic for this discussion.
Yeah, thought this was the social topic. But one last thing:

Where? Miiverse? A place where every child with a Wii U (and now a 3DS) can go to voice whatever they want, and a place that didn't even come into existence until the roster was mostly finished? Besides, I wasn't talking about on Miiverse. I mean overall. Aside from Mega Man, Ridley's probably the top-requested newcomer.
Do you really think Nintendo couldn't contact kids before Miiverse? Ridley is the most requested character in hardcore smash communities. Metroid would be dead without smash, and it's the only reason Samus and Ridley are remotely in the public eye. The majority wants Miis and Rosalina, not the purple boss from SSE.

Unfortunately, a lot of people assume that Sakurai started directing games at the tender age of 18 because he was some kind of video game prodigy or something. But if you dig enough through mostly Japanese information, you find out the less than flattering truth. That's not to say he hasn't learned the ropes more and more over the years, but the way some people treat him as a demi-god when many, many other people could have been in his shoes now through pure chance kind of annoys me.
Well you learn something new every day. Also that type of demigod worship just comes with the territory of being behind a monster of a franchise or just making really good games eg. Valve or Tim Schafer. Not to say you should change your tune but honestly the fact that he's a dropout doesn't change my views on the Smash series as a whole. The man behind it? Maybe.

IS IT HAPPENING?

Okay before a Mod comes bring all the hype from here and go to the Direct thread

So it's obviously smash news then if the man decided to acknowledge it. So all bets about these 'direct leaks' are on I guess.

Based on what? He and his team struck gold with the idea for the first Smash game, and since all the following games have just been derivative of the formula, of course it's going to be successful. The fact that it has Mario and Pokemon characters in it also helps.

It's completely fallacious to think Sakurai and only Sakurai can create the best Smash game possible and that any decision he makes is inherently good. I'm not saying he's a bad person, just not necessarily the best, and the idea that he knows what's best is complete nonsense.

None of this addresses my point. Have faith in him if you want. It still doesn't mean nobody could do what he does better. And the fact that people have such faith in him will lead them to believe that everything he does is the best, essentially creating a self-fulfilling prophecy: if you want to love something so much, you will.
Don't worry Grimnir, I'm with you :)

I think you're underestimating fans. If we know something is bad, we won't buy it. You need more than just product placement to make the game. You need a game.
Marketing can't do crud if the game isn't good. Look at Other: M.

When did I say this? Where did I say "Only he can make the best game"? Now you're just putting words in my mouth.

The guy has still made some of the best games ever. Kirby Super Star, Kid Icarus Uprising, and Super Smash Bros. To say he doesn't know what he's doing at this point is silly.
Again, I never said that. He knows exactly what he's doing. It does not make it "the best".

In an alternate universe where Joe Shmoe created Smash Bros. instead of Sakurai and added in Peppy and Goombella, you can still bet people would be praising his decisions.

Eh, fine. You're probably right. I disagree about the Metroid thing though, but it doesn't really matter. Let's just shut up, since at this point this has absolutely nothing to do with rumors. :p

You mean the game lots of people still bought and most reviewers gave a good score?

I never said you did. You're putting words in MY mouth. This whole conversation started with me talking to someone who DID claim that he knows best and you got involved.

I don't mean to bring anybody down potentially, but Soraya Saga retweeted the Direct news as did two Platinum people. If you've been following along, when Soraya Saga retweets Nintendo Directs, it usually means something in relation to Monolith Soft is coming. The Yoshi revamp leak made no mention of anything related to Monolith Soft, so it may be safe to assume that the Yoshi revamp leak may very well be false, but we shall see.

Sakurai tweeted about it too though, which means Smash news of some sort, regardless. It's not like the Yoshi leak was likely in the first place. :p

So we get X, Bayonetta, and no Year of Yoshi?

Sounds good to me.

You're making an unfounded assumption that's not supported by hard data, Smash may help but we have nothing that concretely says the series got more help from being in Smash then any other series present.

I'm so glad Bowser Jr. isn't getting in as a playable character (likely, since Rosalina's reveal). He deserves to be an assist trophy, at best.

Also, the Iron Man 3 comparison was a pretty good one, I feel. I'd wanted to see the Mandarin ever since the first movie, and they had really teased the fans about it with the Ten Rings organization, and then by making Ben Kingsley look AWESOME as the Mandarin in the promotional material for IM3. Many people I know who have been fans of Iron Man since...years ago (myself included) were extremely excited to see him, but then it was all just a huge farce and a BS plot point of the movie. Sure, the majority of people liked it because they had no clue about who the Mandarin was or where he came from, but those fans who wanted to see the villain in there since the get go got let down.

However, if they just made him a legit villain, they could have easily appeased both audiences, because those who don't know about Mandarin's role in the Iron Man series don't really care. If the movie's good, they'll flock to it no matter what, and then you could make the diehard fans happy as well.

Smash is a very similar case...or, at least, it should be. There are fans of characters like Ridley and K. Rool that have wanted them in the games since forever, and they have yet to appear in a playable form (or in K. Rool's case, in any form at all). Instead, we've gotten ridiculously silly characters like Pichu (who was a waste of a character slot) and off-the-wall, random newcomers like ROB and, more recently, Wii Fit Trainer (ROB turned out to be pretty cool, but let's face it...he was a gamble). No one asked for them, but they DO find their niche. Casual players may still like these characters, but they'd also still like characters such as Ridley and K. Rool...so why not appeal to everyone and include those characters that the fans of their respective series will fawn over, and that casuals will still play as regardless?

Plus they may learn a thing or two about them. There may be a good number of people out there who don't even recognize characters like Ridley and K. Rool, despite the fact that they are key aspects of their respective series that have a long line of games which will, undoubtedly, continue into the future. These kinds of characters may spike interest in those franchises which have struggled as of late and then we may see some more support for those series...both on the end of the fans as well as Nintendo. This would be a great reason to include Shulk as well...Xenoblade was a fantastic game and X looks to be even moreso. If you can place an interesting character into Smash, which will go out to millions of people, who promotes a lesser-appreciated game series at the same time...I figure it's pretty much a no-brainer.

You guys are talking like K. Rool and Ridley are not in the game. Calm down, they are still likely.

Gotta say, there are some really great points and comparisons being made in here, but they need to not be made in here.

Take them to the main General Discussion thread, please.

What the heck is up with his mouth? It's scary man.

Metroid almost died with the first game, the second did poorly, and Super's sales was a big reason for the series being dead for so long. It most likely would of went the way of Kid Icarus without SSB. It's a similar situation for Mother, Kid Icarus, Earthboud and most of the cast really.

Gotta say, there are some really great points and comparisons being made in here, but they need to not be made in here.

Sorry, forgot again. I'll drop it this time.

I apologize for the off-topicness. I've said my bit about Sakurai and I'll leave it at that.

Getting on topic, I see only one leak that I can see in the OP claims Diddy will be revealed tomorrow. Several claim he is in, and one claims he'll be revealed this month. I don't think him showing up or not will kill as many leaks as people think.

Edit: Fenrir and others, if you want to argue more about Sakurai with me, take it to PMs.

Compared to other Nintendo competitive multiplayer games, smash games are much more than derivative.
My biggest fear for the smash series is that the Mario Kart director or somebody similar will take over and take the life out of it.

Honestly, name a multiplayer game director who is better than Sakurai. He's made some mistakes, but for my money, he very clearly tries to put more into each game than practically any other director. heck, KI:uprising had 100+ unique weapons. Each Smash has hundreds of collectibles.. The dude tries hard.

Calling out that he's a dropout is pretty irrelevant... A number of incredible people have been, so I'm not sure what you are trying to say. The games he makes show more to his talent than a college degree.

I'm not saying he's perfect, but imo, he's among a very elite few.

Edit* sorry mods...
