Since I was gonna post in the LH social thread about it, but it got locked, I thought I'd just make a thread about it here

It was a good game wasn't it ^_^

♥ Man, The original Sonic game is very spectacular, it was indeed my 1st game back in 2001 during his 10th anniversary, I've never managed to get all the Chaos Emeralds lol, I hear there's a secret boss fight as well?

I honestly can't figure out the feel of the Genesis games anymore. I went from Sonic 3 & Knuckles back to the original and was just like, "This is different." Still great games, regardless. Green Hill Zone never gets old.

♥ ^^I've always wanted to play Sonic & Knuckels, I've never played any of the other classic though, although I did play Sonic 2 briefly, but I must say Sonic 1 will always been one of my favorite 'classic' games to date, that Marvel Zone music is the bomb.

Sonic 1 kinda blows actually.

To me, Sonic 2 is the perfect Sonic game. Sonic 1 is too clumsy and slow. Knuckles/3 is too random and clunky. The rest of the games...well, I won't talk about those.

but yeah, Sonic 2 is the perfect balance between ultra speeding thru levels and stimulating platforming.

if only there was a thread where we could talk about random old games like this without making an entire new thread dedicated to them. like maybe some sort of "social" thread maybe. i dunno, it's a pretty radical idea.

Shame all it would generate is spam and non-game discussion, though this isn't the place to talk about it.

I agree with you though on Sonic 2. Sonic 1 was way too slow, the spin-dash ability really made Sonic 2 so much better, not to mention the co-op with Tails.

oh no, non-game social discussion! the horror!

Sonic3/Knuckles is so close to being the best Sonic game, but a couple of things hold it back in my eyes. Mainly, it is Sandopolis Zone, Marble Garden Zone, and Carnival Night Zone. These zones basically suck balls. There should never be a level where the 10 minute time limit is an actual perceivable threat. I hate that section of Sandopolis that loops over and over unless you do it just right.

I think Sonic 2 is better just because it is much more "to the point", where you are never hitting dead ends and wondering where to go, but it is still a good difficulty.

But Sonic 3/Knuckles has a lot more going for it. Twice the levels, an extra character, various Super modes, different bonus levels, etc etc. it's just the way the levels are designed that puts me off.

Yeah I personally dislike a lot of the Sonic & Knuckles stages & Marble Garden Zone. Carnival Night I do not mind though.
Can this be a Genesis/MegaDrive era Sonic game thread?

Sonic 2 is my favourite Sonic game, and I still enjoy playing it now. I can do it easy as anything now, but I remember getting to Aquatic Ruin was a challenge for me when I was little XD.
Sonic 1 was awesome, I'm more used to the PAL version, the soundtrack was brilliant, especially Starlight Zone, and it was overall a fun if not slow paced game.
Sonic and Knuckles was pretty sweet, although I never played it without level select, but Sonic 3 was easily the worst for me; the soundtrack and level aesthetics were great, but the layouts of all the levels bar Ice Cap 1 were terrible and a chore to get through for me lol.

I was playing through 3 recently on the PS3 collection, but it crashed on the second act of the last zone as I was in a spiked pit as Super Sonic DX.

I've always liked 1 the most, 2 and 3 have just been reeeeeeeeal easy for me, not saying they're bad games or anything.

Besides, I was never a huge fan of, "Hold right and jump" Yeah, I know it's a Sonic game, but still.

♥ I've always wanted to play those Sonic minigames, I hear they are fun, I did play Sonic Pinball on PC and I must say, it isn't all that great, it quite difficult IMO.

I find it extraordinarily difficult to continue playing Sonic 1 when I'm halfway through Marble Zone or Spring Yard Zone. Not to say the rest of the game is bad, but I guess the level motifs are just dull for me.

Sonic 2 on the other hand, I'll grind through that in a heartbeat, always trying to beat it in under 3-4 hours. I'm always thrilled to go through Oil Ocean Zone in each playthrough; ironic, considering I abhorred the level as a child. It just seems like the only level in the entire series that captures the "dark and gritty" feel without actually employing the aesthetics and scenery befitting the cliche "dark and gritty" motif we see nowadays. Definitely one of my favorite levels, even if the Aquis/seahorse enemies are an enormous pain in the ***.

So is it me or is Oil Ocean Zone supposed to be an allegory or metaphor of sorts for the Middle East or something? The place has a **** ton of oil in it, some of the structures might be inspired by Middle Eastern culture and even the music has some hints of Middle East music in there

I remember going as far as Metropolis Zone before I died and I only hit there once

I really REALLY hate Casino Night's boss. Like you have no idea how much lives I waste on him and how much he angers me

First time I remember playing Sonic 2 - I think I was 4 years old - I Game Over'd at Casino Night Zone. Next time I played it (I never owned Sonic 2 until I got Sonic Mega Collection, I had to constantly rent it on the Genesis before that), I Game Over'd at Death Egg Zone. I beat the game around the 5th or 6th time I played it. I never really got caught in that difficulty hurdle I see other people talk about. Never freaked out about the rising Mega Mack in Chemical Plant either; I just saw it as a nuisance and thought to myself "oh, ok, just more reason to go up the blocks even faster."

I never got past the barrel in Carnival Night Zone in Sonic 3 though when I was little. Never could figure it out. I could beat the game no sweat if I rented a copy of the game that had a save file at Ice Cap Zone or Launch Base Zone, but I could not get past that damn barrel.

I really hate the Chemical Plant boss. I hate that you can die/fall in the water after you beat him. In fact, many times I would beat him, then fall through him and into the water to die.

Sonic 3 and Knuckes is the best Sonic game ever IMO. That game has the best level design.

I actually like Sonic 2 less than Sonic 1. The levels just seemed boring to me, with the exception of Chemical Plant.

Thank you so much for making this thread.
Me? I thought 3 & Knuckles was the best due to the length of it.
Sonic 2 would follow it for me :awesome:

Most of the time when I played Sonic 2, I got all the way to the Death Egg, but it took me a long time to actually beat that final boss. I'd get all the way there and use up all of my lives and continues on it and still lose, and then not have the motivation to try again for a while. The first time I actually beat it was as Knuckles (with the Sonic & Knuckles add-on).

I never got past the barrel in Carnival Night Zone in Sonic 3 though when I was little. Never could figure it out. I could beat the game no sweat if I rented a copy of the game that had a save file at Ice Cap Zone or Launch Base Zone, but I could not get past that damn barrel.
The same went for me. Honestly, I don't know what Sega was thinking with that thing. I cannot count the number of times my sisters and I would get there and try all sorts of things to try and get through there, jumping up and down on it, using Tails to push it up and down even more, but we never thought to press up and down on it. We always dreaded getting to that point, because we knew we'd never be able to get past it.

How could you guy hate Oil Ocean? That's like one of the best Zones!
I was never a fan. I guess it's a pretty cool design, but something about it just didn't click with me. I'm not terribly fond of the music, and something about the level always gave me a headache. Same thing always happened with Act 1 of the Sandopolis Zone. I think something about the bright, sunny, desert kind of atmosphere did it.

Overall, Sonic 3 & Knuckles is my favorite of the games, and Sonic 2 is my least favorite. I love them all, don't get me wrong, but I've always been least attached to Sonic 2. That includes all of the Genesis games, too (except Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, I've never played that one and it's completely different), even 3D Blast. I know that one's received harsh criticism by some fans, but I honestly love that game.

Diamond Dust Zone Act 2 on the Genesis had the best music theme out of all the music in the Genesis games, no questions asked.

Yeah, I've always loved Sonic 3's special stage music. It's legit.

Final Robotnik, though. <3

Oh boy, the barrel? I personally think people in general overestimate the difficulty of that little puzzle. Sure, I got a Time Over the first time I played Carnival Night Act 2 before I decided to do something like up and down and got through. I didn't get stuck on it for months.

And yes, I was 5 years old or maybe a bit younger when I first did it.

the barrel is the dumbest part in the game because of the fact that jumping up and down on it actually has an effect, so it fools you into thinking you can use that to get past it. also, no other object in the game reacts to the up/down buttons so it really makes no sense.

That barrel was a nightmare.
I bet most people, at first, tried jumping up and down and all around to get it to go down, right?

Actually, there is. It's a barrel that's against a wall and to the left of it is a platform that holds a monitor with a fire shield and a monitor with 10 rings. It does indeed react to the up and down presses. But the thing is, you can make it past that point with jumping and/or tails so it's not really much of a hint either.

up and down and all around

That's what I mean. the earlier barrel can be passed by jumping.

and also, that's a barrel. I said "the barrel is the only object in the game that reacts to up and down" so you aren't really contradicting me.
