Hyde apparently takes himself out (and thus Jekyll as well), but only because Jekyll had enough control left to realize he was becoming Hyde permanently and how evil he had become after Hyde killed another character. This along with one of Jekyll's friends picking up the pieces also ends up keeping the authorities in their town from discovering Hyde and (I think) the potion's existence.
