I think I slightly understand why Fireblaster gets a bit peeved when Melee players talk about 64. Someone said that 64 has no depth and that it's on par with Brawl. Just.. wow.

Speaking of Fireblaster, I've been really irritable these past few days, not sure why. Guess I will join him and Rob and form the disgruntled trio

Luigi sucks
i am so many levels above everyone else in terms of rage and resentment these days
Does this mean that you're better or worse?

It's kinda like the whole "I'm your worst enemy" thing. Doesn't it make more sense to say that someone is your BEST enemy (ie the best at being the worst)? ****ing people are so confusing.

i trolled a bunch of melee players at a melee tournament this weekend. i showed up with a 64 setup and said i had a couple free ssb4 codes to give away if anyone could beat me in 64. there was 1 person who could take a stock. I could take stocks from all of them on keyboard in their ****ty game that i dont play. me and another 64 player who doesnt play melee did their team tournament and got 4th or 5th out of 9 teams rofl. didnt stay for singles

sounds like a local with a bunch of ****ty melee players. I get that you guys don't like the game, but don't pretend like the skill ceiling is higher for 64

m2k vs boomfan happened right before peru.

boom 4 or 5 stocked him with random characters

boom takes stocks off of him in melee

My problem with melee players is their lack of individuality and their ignorance. They're mostly followers who hop on 'hype' bandwagons and suck the ***** of every top level player. I understand that with a lot of them, smash and the tournaments are their only social environments, but it doesn't mean you have to worship M2K or Mango like they're gods and have these extreme cookie cutter 'salty'/'hype' personalities because its what everyone else is doing. They obnoxiously overreact and freak out for short hops and wavedashes and gawk over getting top level players signatures because they desperately want to be part of the melee crowd. It saddens me a little but their ignorance is where I begin to really lose respect. They're clueless about 64 and pretend to think they know all about it and understand it because they appreciate melee streams. Melee players commonly say "If you want combos why don't you just play Street Fighter?", clearly they don't know what they're talking about. Or "64 is great and I love it, Isai is so good, I think he could be the best at Melee, do you know if he still plays Melee? He is so cool" when they can't name a single specific reason as to why they like it or why its great, they just say they like it because they just like anything that anyone else likes blindly, and its usually because they want to beat off Isai.

When I was a kid, me and my friends created an alias called Winston McJenkins, and it was mostly done as a social experiment to prove that there were people who will admit to anything or agree to anything or like anything if they thought it would help them identify with others. We would ask people if they knew Mr. McJenkins or if they saw him pass by moments ago and there was a large group of people that would say they knew him or saw him or met him once despite him never existing. I feel like most melee players are these kind of people, the ones that fall for Winston McJenkins because it seems like the cool bandwagon to hop on. I don't hate the players for it but it makes me feel bad for them and the problem with melee is it creates a community that attracts these people and only worsens that behavior and those needs because they are encouaged by their blind following of top level players and using the vocabulary of the commentators they think are cool. Words like 'hype' and 'salty' become overused and reactions and events are generalized as hype or salty instead of being more descriptive or thought out. The lack of individuality by the majority of the people in that community holds themselves back and the more the community is encouraged, the less likely these people will ever grow up.

In my opinion, hate for melee is less to do with the game or specific players, and more to do with the community as a whole.

you guys are all generalizing about melee. and karajan, melee and 64 are completely different games. boomfan taking stocks off of melee has nothing to do with what I said lol. the meta is completely different.

@ Shears Shears I get what you're saying, but isn't that the same as sports? You wouldn't fault anyone for getting hype about their favorite team. Not all Melee players are ignorant about 64, but a lot of them are bound to be because it's their favorite game. That's just how the world works. I'm sure you run into the same thing when people talk about sports teams and **** like that.

Actually, I'd say that Karajan trying to use boomfan taking stocks off m2k as an example of the 64 skill ceiling being higher pretty much shows that there are 64 players who don't know much about how Melee works. Karajan is notorious for making a lot of arguments based on false equivalence anyway.

It's a two way street. If they're more interested in Melee, they don't care about how much they know/dont know about 64.

then where the **** is your evidence that the skill ceiling is higher in melee?

the only thing across characters that makes the game more difficult technically is a design flaw in the gamecube controller, where if you come from a 64 background and cancel with the n64 z button then you'll have to get used to using a ****ty trigger. It actually isnt relevant to new smash players because you can cancel with the gamecube z button (next to the r trigger) instead. M2k does that which is why m2k cancels with R on 64.

Oh, and they have a C stick so they can do areals without jumping/fast falling, which is 1000x easier

Its one thing to not care about 64 and admit you know nothing, its another thing to know nothing but act like you do and make assumptions about the game and its players, i.e. thinking its the same as street fighter and every character has a 0-death combo on every other character out of every single move.

As far as sports goes, yeah its why I don't respect women that watch sports or NFC East fans (more specifically Redskins fans). None of them know what they're talking about and blindly cheer for the team without knowing the players, or they scream at the television "Get off your knees ref you're blowing the game" or "How can you not catch that?" when the penalty is clear or the QB was getting hurried and the receiver was double covered. Then theres always the Redskins fans who don't jokingly think they're going to win the superbowl but will argue and get in a fist fight with you if you say they're probably not going to win especially since they're coming off a 2-14 season for the 3rd straight time. If Redskins fans just admitted they weren't the best, or girls admitted they didn't really know what they're talking about, and everyone was just honest and didn't do things becaue they thought it was cool, I would have much more respect for them. But like the melee community, they are ignorant and have no individuality. As far as vocabulary goes, people that don't know **** about sports (i.e. every analyst on ESPN) always uses 'swagger' to describe all forms of success. He converted a hail mary? Swagger. His opponent missed the game winning field goal? Because he was afraid of his swagger. Although now it seems like they're using the word 'moxie' this year (10 years ago it was called the 'it factor', my only excitement is to see what it will be in 5 years from now). Again, I can't fully respect someone who falls under these personalities. Its why I can't watch ESPN outside of game broadcasts and its why I can't listen to melee streams and the commentators, or even bother getting involved with the people in the melee community.

Salty so salty, so much salt, salt, salt salt salt. Hype, hype level maximum, salt hype hype hype hype, M2K wavedash is hype makes Mango so salt, use salt to make hype, hype makes me salty.

I wasn't talking about technical skill... tho the technical skill ceiling is higher too.

@ Shears Shears I'm not gonna comment on the whole women or nfc east fans other than to say that you KNOW you're generalizing. Plus, how boring would watching sports/esports be if teams/players/spectators weren't self indulging? It's part of the experience. There are annoying people everywhere, but not everybody is like that.

The skill ceiling as in player skill? Sorry, but Isai is the ceiling. Isai / Jouske are more dominant than anything else seen in the Melee community. Isai can win the largest 64 tournaments locked into half of the character roster, without counterpicking. Jouske has only lost 2 tournaments in like 4 or 5 years in single elim, b01, character lock, with multiple opponents that can beat superboomfan.

I'm not discussing melee skill or the meta or anything about the game. I'm not saying I know anything about the game like melee people pretend to know about 64, I'm commenting on the community. I have been to a few PM tournaments, and these are observations I've made, not assumptions. Melee and PM people will talk about 64 (the game not community) as if they know all about it but then later admit they've almost never played it and aren't aware it doesn't have side-b and other moves/mechanics. I don't commentate on melee (the game not the community) as if I know about all its mechanics/moves/meta. I also used to play brawl and went to several tournaments for that well before I ever knew 64 had a forum and before I ever went to a 64 tournament which is why I've been a member of smashboards since 08 but my first ever 64 tournament was just over a year ago. I've spent a lot of time with other people in the community and around these games, my opinions are not assumptions, they are empirical and I'll admit mildly generalized, but accounts for more than half of the people I've encountered in the other communities. I think if your assertion pertains to a majority in a group, then its fair for you to attach those assertions as characteristics of the group. Anyone in the group that does not uphold those assertions isn't a counter argument to them, but a statistical outlier that can be ignored until they are significant enough to make a difference to the groups trends and behavior. Until then, I will stand by my opinion that melee (which I've used as the umbrella community for both brawl and PM) is a community of people that are ignorant of 64 and lack individuality.

to the melee community's credit they do give a **** about the game's preservation, hence raising all that money for evo and showing up in droves for mlg/apex/etc.

to their discredit, they still think #oneunit is a thing and something they're working toward.

Once again, false equivalent. Isai and jouske are the ceiling in 64 and they're the best in 64 in relation to everybody else who plays SIXTY FOUR.

You can't compare that information and say that because of that, they're btter than the best Melee players at their game.

Here's my evidence: There is WAY more competition in Melee than in 64. MORE TOURNAMENTS in the last year than in all of 64's history probably. People have been doing it a lot longer at the highest level and pushing themselves to be better than the top for a long time (> a decade). There are so many Melee tournaments every weekend that their players get to practice against OTHER PLAYERS constantly FOR MONEY (hundreds if not thousands of dollars). People have traveled internationally for a decade now to compete in this game. Now there are Melee players who have legit sponsors and make a living out of this. Not MANY players, but we are LIGHT YEARS away from getting that constant competition world-wide.

edit- your statement about Isai/Jouske I would compare to Ken back to when he was the best. They're way past that. Now the competition is so tight and demanding that no player can sleep on anyone. How could you say that the ceiling is higher in 64? I like 64 better... a LOT better, actually, but don't be ridiculous.

edit #2- this last summer, both armada and mango supposedly put in about 6-8 hrs of practice a day to stay in top shape for all tournaments. Isai doesn't have to practice nearly as much (if at all)to make sure he performs well. We're just not at that level yet.

I know smash 4 doesn't have alot of the special techniques, but the game feels nice, especially the combos, I really miss z cancel though
Got you added

For sure. I like the feel of all the demo characters except for Mega Man, he just comes off as really clunky to me.

Villager is definitely my favorite though. The tree is TOO GOOD
