Honest question here,

I play melee mainly and barely touched smash on N64 so I was wondering, why do you guys like playing The N64 version over melee? What makes it better to you guys?
I don't. I just play it more (and probably better at Smash 64) due to the people I can play on Kaillera.

I dunno it's not as simple as combos or anything

I just like the way it feels

It's a very different game

Melee I never feel as in control

Really simplifying things to "I hate not being able to drop through platforms" or "I don't want to have to grind out techskill forever" doesn't cover it. It's like asking why someone prefers basketball to baseball. They'll give you a bunch of reasons, but in the end it just comes down to which they like more

1. Really good balance. Samus has a better chance of beating pikachu in 64 than Kirby beating Fox in Melee.

2. the combo game in 64 is more fun.

3. Ness is more fun in 64.

4. I like the 64 throw system better

5. Isai is dirty. Like to an extent that make Mango look like a noob in his respective game.

64 has online. And it's balanced. I value character balance probably more than the average gamer, because I like playing multiple characters.

IDK if I would like Melee more or not, because I haven't played it competitively.

What battlecow said.

Also I like the physics of.... everything in 64 better, and I like the shield system better.

And being able to shield drop with ease lol xP

Shield dropping in melee isn't too hard. It takes practice, but a lot of things in 64 take practice, too.

As far as character balance goes, I've experience the worst of character balance in two of the smash games for my favourite characters. Ganondorf has never been very good, and then in Brawl, he's not only bad, but he's the worst! I honestly prefer that my favourite characters aren't very good because the challenge is what makes it truly fun for me. Working with less options to overcome the odds just feels really great. Bowser is just as bad in both games.

I'm also against smash games having online play because I feel that personal interaction is one of the few things keeping Melee so strong over the many years it has existed, but perhaps the same case could be made for 64 due to online play.

what tank said!
and of course nostalgia. good old days.
i like the "don't get hit or you probably are going to die" mentality. and it's not that hard for beginners to get into this game compared to melee

in addition to what others said, i HATE how good shielding is in melee. like everything i do gets shield grab, and i'm like: wtf, i attacked you, got some shieldstun, i feel like i should have the advantage in this situation not you

RIGHT? this is one of the things that keep me from playing melee for more than a few matches, so annoying

So just because you don't like something, no one should get to have it?

I've had this thought too. I don't know how good shielding really is in Melee but I like how shielding is not very good in 64.

Really? I feel the opposite way, like I have less control when I play Smash 64 than I do when I play Melee. I'm not sure if it's because you can't fast fall after doing an aerial attack, there being no wavelanding, or just something total different. I just don't feel as in control as far as movement.

Usually you're going to like whichever one you started playing first (competitively). Not always but most of the time.

I really enjoy playing melee. I think I just enjoy ssb64 more because I'm better comparatively. I have more of a chance at taking games off Isai/Boom than I do Dr. PP or Mango.

But **** if online melee is getting to the point of being playable I might have to start playing melee more.

I dunno I play a lot of melee with people at/above my skill level, and a lot of 64 with people at/above my skill level. They're both great games but I just objectively have more fun playing 64.

it already is, u obv need a much better comp than for 64, as for laptops ud prolly need a i5/i7 with a dedicated graphics card

for low cost 60fps melee desktop upgrade NEW parts costs like $300(200 for all of mobo+cpu[i3]+ram, 100 gfx) i'd say; and for a comp all together NEW would be like $400-450(other stuff ^+power supply+case+hdd[w/dvd drive optional]) example build its 380 alltogether, coo

NEW laptop that can run melee 60fps is like $650-750 example laptop 1 example laptop 2 (for the love of **** don't use win8...)

proof u can play melee online w/ no desync

I have a core i5, so that's fine. I'd just need a new graphics card.
amd radeon hd 7750 1gb will run it fine and you don't need any special power connectors, just snap it in and go

gtx 640 1gb as well but its slower and a little more expensive (lolwut)

if you want a good gfx card thats low cost and ***** any current game with 1 monitor and 60fps, get a 7870; get a 2gb if you play high gfx games like bf3 with high mem req, if u have fast ram [1866+] ignore 2gb and go 1gb

Graphics card doesn't matter as much as CPU does. A decent graphics card will do. Ask the SSBMO devs and they'll tell you the same.

SERIOUSLY. Shield is the best attack in that game lol. Sometimes I feel like I'm playing SF how peeps be camping and turtling. This is one of the major differences that kills my stamina for Melee sometimes.

But yea, why are we talking about Melee...

Bond. James Bond.

and 10 pizzas
Dude, this reminds me. SkyFall was amazing. Who's seen it :D

Oh god, another Daniel Craig hater >__>, but ANYWAYS xP . Seriously though, Craig was on point, and Javier Bardem was a legendary villain (as usual).

"DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT DOES TO YOU!"
I'm making a series of memes from that scene btw

i wish i had more room in my signature for this.
It's my famous line bro :)

And as I was typing it, I knew it was a legendary post.

Daniel Craig is at least better than Timothy Dalton though. But Daniel was much better now than in casino royal and QS. And the movie was ****ing great overall, so I liked it allot.

Melee shields are fine imo. I like the skill and creativity it requires to properly shield pressure and space around punishments, and light shield is a cool mechanic that adds depth. 64 shield is fun too but mainly because of finding ways to trap people in it. Brawl shield is really really dumb though.

what he said
but my only issue with melee shields is that certain characters have such a bad one that shielding is somewhat useless (I.E. GaW and some others) and that certain characters have a move that can potentially shield stab alone (I.E. Peach's d-smash)

Neither shield system is perfect, in my opinion. I think 64 has too much shieldstun (even though I love shieldbreaker combos, lol) and I think melee might have slightly too little. I like how the little shieldstun in melee gives you many quick options out of shield, but you guys really overstate the power of shieldgrabs in melee. When I first started trying to play melee I felt exactly the same way, "I HIT YOUR SHIELD AND YOU GRABBED ME BEFORE I EVEN HIT THE GROUND WTF!," but then I realized it's just much more difficult to shield pressure in Melee and oftentimes not worth it. Spacies can shine-aerial and stuff but even that has tiny holes that you can buffer rolls out of or shine OoS if you're a boss.

The way the games deal with shielding is just different, I think they're both fun, just don't try to use one games tactics when shielding in the other; picking up Melee will mean you have years of bad habits from 64 to dust off, I'm still working many of those off myself.

Koro's right about shield size for some charactes, notably Game and Watch, and Peach's dsmash is ridiculously good at stabbing shields, don't hold down against that while shielding, lol, I always get stabbed -> 3 or 4 hits from that trying to shine OoS.
