I used the term "relatively hard sci-fi." When the series you're comparing it to is Bayonetta... it's pretty damn hard.

You think Brienne looks like a man because femininity is not designed with practicality in mind in real life. It doesn't allow for women to be physically active. Society has coded masculinity as the "default," especially for physical activities, when in reality it's just the absence of feminine traits.

Here is Ibtihaj Muhammad, a famous female fencer.

Nothing she wears is expressively feminine except for the hijab which she wears for religious reasons under her helmet. She wears the standard outfit all fencers wear. Samus wears power armor that is practical in her setting.

I could go into a whole dissertation about how feminine expression is largely commodified by men who want to keep women in certain boxes, but I'll spare you of that. Point is, in a practical setting, when it comes to physical activity, feminine expression is a nonpriority.
I still don’t feel like I really understand where you’re coming from. But I don’t think it’s useful to keep going around in circles. It is fiction after all.

Also. I always feel attacked when I hear things like this

Because I LIKE dressing and acting in a stereotypically feminine manor. In fact, when I don’t, I feel less like a woman. I actually have to give myself a pep talk every morning just to go to work at camp in a t-shirt. It’s how I feel comfortable in my skin. And now you’re telling me that I’m actually oppressed and I should just look like a man because “we should be liberated from the concept of womanhood, it oppresses people”. No. I’m not doing that. I’m a woman. I’m going to dress like a woman. I’m going to be proud of my ****. And I feel like other women should be able to do that too.
I’m just sayin, that looked like a strong woman to me. And then you swoop in with the “she looks like she has a ****” and it’s a bit of a yikes imo
You can feel that I guess. But she doesn’t look like a strong woman to me. If I saw that picture with no context, i’d think it was a picture of a man.
SnakeFighter64 SnakeFighter64 I seriously doubt Samus’ armor is some sort of statement. It’s all just for practical use. Your looking too deep into it.

I bought all of those lol
Are those little Nintendo Voucher things worth it? Probably not but I feel like if there was ever a chance I chould buy some it's now. Could save 40 dollars with those stupid things if I am going to buy all 4.

While some may find the idea of a Crash trailer featuring a shot with him alongside Samus and Guv unlikely, I beg to differ.

I could imagine a part where they show every fighter with orange overalls while Crash is at the center.

These being Crash, Guv, :ultsamus:, :ultwendy:, :ultinkling:, :ultlucas:, :ultdaisy: and :ultcharizard:

Kay guys, let's ease up a bit on SnakeFighter

I understand her opinions on this subject might be a bit different from your's, but y'all seem a bit too harsh on her
I think I'm being pretty fair. I just don't think there is anything in the text of the Metroid series to interpret the idea that Samus is using the armor in a way to hide her body or gender. The concept of "female armor" doesn't really exist outside of fantasy settings that put their female characters in impractical outfits largely to serve the male gaze. In real life armor exists to protect your body. It is a non-aesthetic accessory.

Of course I have my own opinions on how femininity is commercialized and mass marketed to society, but I understand that trans women are basically required to perform feminine expression to be accepted at large by society. That isn't their fault, it's the ridiculous expectations placed upon them.

Because I LIKE dressing and acting in a stereotypically feminine manor. In fact, when I don’t, I feel less like a woman. Men, women, and non-binary people in real life should be allowed to dress and express themselves however they want. Especially trans people (see my lines above). I never said you "should look like a man." But basically any real life female athlete, soldier, etc. is going to probably tell you the same things. Feminine expression is largely an aesthetic that hinders physical activity. And that's okay! But I think it's a bit of a dangerous road to say a woman that is not performing femininity "looks like a man." Gender expression encompasses a wide range and utility items like armor are inherently gender neutral.

Damn, I don't think I've ever heard this problem explained so damn vividly and respectfully. Good write up, Storm.

Samus is cool.

She's pretty and She slays evil aliens including a murderous, purple space dragon, and lovingly cares for naive baby aliens.
I’m a Metroid fan for a reason.
Seriously doh, don’t dare ignore me on this Metroid talk, because I would be dissapointed with the thread as a fan of the series. It would also prove that the F4 guy gimmick some have forced into me has ruined my reputation.

I see, I thought the Awakening stuff was just weird multi-verse shenanigans, didn't realize they were in the same world.
It is multiverse stuff, actually. Hoshido and Nohr are fictional to Awakening's world, as Chrom described them as "Mythical" kingdoms.

I mean, one of my female character look pretty feminine outside of battle, but when battle come, she does wear a armor that make her look really masculine. Tho it's because of:

1)Her body is quit fragile, so her armor need to be quit bulky in some part to protect her well, even if she is quit powerful & fast, she is not skilled enough to afford wearing less armor.
2)The problem that come with this armor is less about gender, and more so about her trying to stand out compared to another character (who she took the style of fighting and such after his passing) who she can't help but compare herself too.

And while said character she took the mantle of is a male, I think she still feel unsure of herself if she took the legacy of a woman.

So I guess it jsut depend of the context for the character and the story she is in.

Just wanted to bring up that since we were talknig about female character & armor.

So it's like how Paper Mario is just a story of Mario in the actual Mario world. Who do you think wrote those stories? :073:
There's a tongue in cheek fan theory that the entirety of Fates is a stageplay written by Owain and it's simultaneously the dumbest and best theory ever.

I don’t know how to respond to this. Even though I feel like I should. Aside from the fact that I disagree about the neutrality of armor. When I think masculine design I think flat and bulky. Exactly what most armor and sports wear does to the human body.
Woopsy doopsy
I kind of want to know what this was originally.

It wasn't you necessarily, your points were actually very well done.

just a few others here seem a bit rough on her almost to the point where it starts to feel a bit like bullying.

You were perfectly fine though.

No one has said this either. You're undermining who the central person behind his conversation is.
The introduction post of my AMA thread just said “the lovely Fantastic Four guy” written on it.

And that is a huge bad sign.

I don’t know. I always felt Samus was ashamed of her body. And that she felt like she needed to look masculine to be intimidating. Whereas Bayo lets it all hang out and still scares the crap out of angels and demons alike, laughing all the way.
That's as misguided and misconstrued a take as I've seen on the subject. Both fight/exist completely different settings, have different rules they follow, and have different stories/reasons for being the way they are.

Bayonetta is showey, Samus is reserved and repressed. I think y’all know which one I prefer.
If you're looking at cutscenes in Other M, sure.

If you're looking at the actual games:

It's fine to have your preference, no one can fault you for that. But if you're gonna generalize, at least put a little effort in explaining how much of each thing you've been exposed to aside from animations/portrayal in Smash. It comes off as something others obviously want to refute (as if it's taking bait almost), which leads to these incidents happening.

A. Their discussing it,
B. They have no clue what’s up.

I hope it’s the former.

And I don’t want to be the F4 guy at all.

But then I don’t know why people would ignore me regarding Metroid.
I wouldn't even know you were the F4 guy if you didn't bring it up here and there lately.

If you don't wanna be know as something, jsut stop talking about it and don't asnwer if peoples are asking about it.

Also, you being the f4 guy has nothing to do as to why your post are ignored.

Sometime, you post just get ignore, that's it, there is no meaning behind it, and you shouldn't try ot search a deeper one, because it only make you more paranoiac abotu everything. (speaking from experience there)

I don't even know why we're having a conversation on a topic this serious. They're just video game characters.

And besides, Samus's masculine-looking armor is somewhat intentional. They wanted people to be surprised when they first realized Samus is a girl, and I'm sure that's something they've actually tried to keep in her designs.

So it's like how Paper Mario is just a story of Mario in the actual Mario world. Who do you think wrote those stories? :073:
In Paper Mario, it's suggested that Herringway is the one writing the story (he's one of those blue penguins we see in Yoshi games. A Bumpty).
