Cloud would be the obvious choice for a lot of newer fans here but a lot of people underestimate how big of a deal it was when Sonic joined in Brawl. I remember people losing their **** when he was announced and that was the only thing me and my friend talked about that day in Middle School lol.

And well...the console wars between Nintendo and SEGA. Seeing SEGA's mascot playable in Smash Bros was massive even if it's not as big of a deal now with so many third parties in.

Cloud is a close No. 2 on the sheer "holy **** this is actually happening" factor. I remember my jaw just dropping when I was watching the Direct live at College then seeing everyone's reactions on SB.

You know, I have to admit, when I woke up this morning I didn't expect to see a video of Dragon Quest characters singing You Can't Stop the Beat from Hairspray, but here we are.

I was here for the Sonic Reveal and it was pretty huge. And the fact it just showed out of nowhere without any fanfare or apparent leaks.

As for me, Cloud is think gets my vote. Not a huge fan of reaction videos but I think the whole Maximilian Dude video sums up just about everyone’s reaction to Cloud.

Snake, Sonic, Cloud, Joker, Mega Man and Banjo are probably the biggest ones.

I'd also nominate Ryu, but the leak the day before his reveal really hurt his impact unfortunately. Simon also falls in a similar boat, but not everyone saw the leak (I didn't) and his reaction was much more genuine and surprising, especially with Richter helping him in the surprise department.

Wasn't here for all of the reveals so can't say who left the biggest impact, but Snake is definitely up there in terms of pure shock - broke new grounds as our first third-party rep and it was Snake of all ****ing characters.

Feel like it might have something to do with perceptions of the fanbase - which makes no sense, because if you're going to avoid a series just because you don't like the fans then at least half the series represented in Smash would be off limits

Yeah if we're going to talk about bad fanbases, Smash itself has an... interesting base lol. This site is fantastic compared to the hellsites of twitter and reddit.

Well, if it was to a ridiculous degree it would be unfair. If it was like a one or two difference, then I don't think it would be that bad and more a result of the composition of characters. Either way, I would hope that the writing would be good. If the relationships are portrayed to an equal level of care for voth genders, I would be more okay with the composition difference.

Sonic imo, if I were to tier community reactions, he'd have his own tier at the top. Many of the people who were part of Brawl speculation grew up during that SNES vs Sega Genesis era, so other than the fact that Sonic is a titan of a video game character to begin with, the whole concept of being able to have Mario fight Sonic was a childhood dream come true for so many. His announcement even reached mainstream news sites, which for just a single addition to a video game was unheard of at the time. The circumstances were a bit different back then, Smash speculation wasn't as widespread as it was mostly restricted to dedicated forums, and characters were just dropped on the website at random rather than being at events where millions watch simultaneously, yet he still got such a strong reaction, in terms of pure excitement I don't think there's any comparison.

And that's coming from someone who at the time didn't even want Sonic in the game, I was too young to really appreciate the significance of his inclusion, but there's just no denying the impact it had. I'd say Sonic > Cloud > Banjo, although I think Mega Man is pretty underrated on the poll so far, the difference between Banjo and him wasn't that big.
