Just a quick note that not all of a character’s personality is shown through dialogue. There’s also expressions, mannerisms, actions and reactions, you could give a lot of personality to a character with no dialogue if you master everything else here.

Except people don't. They do the whole silent protagonist thing so the character can be a "reflection of you", so everything is generic and character-less.

It really depends on the game. Cross is completely irrelevant to XCX's story yet their personality is something the player chooses which affects voice lines and multiple dialogue options allow for more snarky responses to stuff

Just saying, but, by comparison, don’t the protagonists of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games have a fixed personality despite being semi-customizable by means of being capable of being one of many different species?

I can't speak for how deep of an arc they all go through but there's plenty of games this year with set main characters and not avatars.

Devil May Cry 5
Death Stranding(though this one isn't one I care for gameplay wise)
Mortal Kombat 11
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3(while not huge on story, it's got many established characters)
Luigi's Mansion 3
That Star Wars game has a set main character
Sekiro does as well, more like Tenchu than Soulsborne stuff in this way

Crash Team Racing HD, technically.
Mario Maker 2, technically.

I think Yoshi's Crafted World was a March title of this year, but maybe it was March 2018.

I don't doubt that it's a recent trend, much in the same way many open world games are or Sad Dad games. But to assume they are going replace set characters or will be is fear mongering and a little silly. I kind of doubt Nintendo's gonna get rid of Mario or Sega axing Sonic and so on.

Well you're kind of making a hard standard here. Your protagonist's story HAS to be about what's happening around them. Otherwise, nothing happens to them and they don't develop. It would be like removing Bakugo's bullying from Deku's development in the first two episodes of My Hero Academia. You can't have one without the other because that's how much it affects Deku.

If you're looking at only Nintendo games, that is very rarely the case in general.

If you're looking outside of Nintendo games, Kingdom Hearts 3, Resident Evil 2, Death Stranding... iconic and distinctive video game characters are not going to go away entirely. They are too marketable for that. You have a tendency to view things in extremes.

Even if we discount Byleth, Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude all have defined stories about them and are debatably the main protags of their routes.

You're... you? People change throughout life. What they thought was inconceivable now can end up being part of them later in life. Eg: High school Bold declaring he would never date and then college Bold gets all interested in dating.

You guys have no damn idea how happy I'm right now. I gave up hope after waiting for over a decade, I really thought Half-Life was never gonna return after Laidlaw leaked the script two years ago. I have never been this happy over a video game announcement before.

FNAF, being on a semi-limited engine, lacks a couple of animations, which does not take away from the experience, but I wanted to challenge myself by animating some of those, so here's a WIP.

on the one hand, actual use of the half-life IP in over 13 years

on the other hand, as per the leaks of HL:A yesterday it's just a borderline-tech demo prologue to half life 2

I don't even care that it's VR only.
Valve refused to acknowledge the Half-Life series AT ALL FOR OVER 12 YEARS. I'm glad to see the series come back. I really thought Valve stopped giving a **** after they didn't even mention Half-Life's 20th year anniversary last year. I might actually buy a VR kit now.

I’m personally not especially interested in playing HL, but it is really cool to see it return after so long.

I wonder what this will do for VR in the future, as well. Since more people might get a VR set for it, will there be more VR games coming out to meet the increased demand?

According to VNN who leaked this way before anyone else. The new Half-Life VR game is supposed to set a new standard for VR games and revolutionize it just like how the original Half-Life revolutionized FPS games. If this is true then this game might be the one to push VR gaming forward.
