unless they add voice acting for your character and other characters, having a customizable character is useless to me

Eh.... disagree. Unique Character Design =/= Voice Acting, but it does play a part.
Just ask all of the Links, most of em have a similar personality, but are completely different otherwise.

Both male and female have been customizable in X and Y, Sun and Moon and these games

Oh. So it's not a new problem then. Still disappointing.

If this keeps happening, there won't be any new modern choices for games like Smash because every character will be so varied and so customizable that representing them would be impossible and they wouldn't have any personality to work with.

In the vast majority of Pokemon games, story for me is just "text boxes you mash A through." I'll take a flexible customized character over that.

Doesn't really help with my problem though does it.

I swear, with every thing I like about this game there's another thing that makes me hate it.

are the avatars fully customizable this time? Or are they still actual characters who you just rename and can serve other rolls in things like the anime and manga?

As others said, they're customizable, however their default appearances have names so I'm assuming they're actual characters too.

Not completely related, but I do wish future Zelda games or more games with silent protagonists did dialogue options like Skyward Sword, especially if it affects what the other characters say and respond to you.

Pokemon has always had a blank character for the player to semi-impose themselves on. The fact that most protagonists other than Red never coming back kind of leads into that, with Red himself being mostly mute. So changing them up to fit the player in any way makes a lot of sense to me, especially since most games since Gen 2 let you at least pick which sex your player character was.

Granted, I generally prefer a main character to get attached to. Not in the means of escapism, but more so I enjoy really cool character designs and sometimes the narrative attached to some of those characters as well. I wouldn't want Metroid to replace Samus with a created rando, same with Mega Man or Ryu being swapped out of a Shoto of your own making. That'd be pretty lame to me.

You have to admit, Splatoon isn't as customizable as other games on the market and the in game personality of the inklings is all basically "happy and 80's". It's not like they have custom emotes or dialogue choices that change how the character acts and is perceived. Which is a good thing for Sakurai because it makes adding them very easy. But then you look at games like Cyberpunk 2077 and start to realize the problem is growing.

I don't feel like you're understanding my point.

I don't, because I don't think your dialogue choices in whoever's home game are going to affect the chances of getting in Smash, because half of the time they use content that isn't very spoiler-y.

With that said, I would like a little more emotes, we have the This Way and Booyah, but the left and right on the D-Pad do absolutely nothing. Then again, I don't know why one would start dancing in the middle of a game where it's REALLY easy to die, and will happen a lot.

Neither of the SwSh protagonists are getting in over a Pokemon.

I'm tired of linear sandbox action-rpgs/action adventures with so much customization that your character basically isn't a character. I want linear gameplay. I want to progress from stage to stage along the lines of a plot, and I want an actual character with an actual personality to step into the shoes of so I can forget about my life for a few hours. I want that to be the norm again so I finally have an abundance of games to play, something I have almost never had in the years I've been into gaming. I'm ****ing nostalgic for an era of gaming I DIDN'T EVEN EXPERIENCE. That's how dissatisfied I am with the current gaming climate. And I wish I could find all the other people who statistically have to have similar opinions so I don't sound like someone who want's all of gaming to bend to her personal desires.

I beat that Century Smash thing with Ken, where you only use Special moves. It took like 5 or 6 tries, but it wasn't too bad. Really the only thing that sucked was getting like 96 K.Os out of 100 on half of those tries because Richter felt like being a huge ****head.

And Spring-Man's a pretty set main character, not that he'd be added in this specific title, if you want a lead who isn't customization. There's also Dante, Rex, Jill, Lara, Crash, Hayabusa and so on. The Twins from Astral Chain would just be choosing your character's sex like Robin, as would Byleth. Though there's plenty of people tired of Fire Emblem.

Wanna bet? How many games this year came out with non-customizable characters who have actual personalities and defined character traits. Who go through an actual arc. Who have an actually story that's actually about them and not just happening around them.
