I pretty much agree with the old "Pokémon for games, Digimon for anime" opinion.
Pokémon's games might have declined over the course of this decade imo, but it still managed to be consistently great for the first 5 generations, in its first 15 years D/P/P is the only installment that's below average imo, which is a super impressive record. Meanwhile Digimon has always been extremely inconsistent on the video game front, you just need to look at the Digimon World series to see how much it's struggled to find an identity. Digimon World 1 is some sort of virtual pet/adventure game hybrid, Digimon World 2 is a 3v3 turn-based RPG, Digimon World 3 is a 1v1 turn-based RPG, and Digimon World 4 is an action/hack and slash game. Most of the things it's tried since have also been of varying quality, ranging from dumpster fire to perfectly fine, but never really great.
On the anime front however it's different. Pokémon has always been really safe and by the numbers in this regard, where as Digimon took a lot more risks, cared more about character development and world building, and has kept on innovating on itself and tried new things. I don't think Digimon has had a great anime in a while tbh, but the ones it did produce in the past still helps put it above Pokémon in this regard, which has always just been consistently average at best.
As for overall quality, Pokémon was far superior over the course of the mid-late 2000s, as well as the early 2010s, and I think it probably still is better, but not by much anymore, it could take as little as Digimon Survive or the Last Evolution movie being good to tip the balance for me. It's the closest the two have been in terms of quality since that initial duel in the late 90s and early 2000s imo, although it's at a lower level than back then.
