Poll made by Sabi. Sora just keeps making it into the top 3. I'm very convinced we'll be among the characters beyond the Pass given Sakurai's two statements "Pleasing as many fans" and "Bringing together many worlds".
Kinda nice to see Crash get to being 11th, which is fine enough for me. Although, I'm weirded out by the votes for Heavy since I don't exactly see a character from Valve getting in happening anytime soon.

To echo osby osby , I don’t think it’s a bad thing to realize any remaining characters from 1st party games aren’t as big as folks think. But that’s ok. It doesn’t diminish the character’s value, or the fact that people like the character.

I do think, though, that one thing the Smash fan base hasn’t necessarily learned, and it may never learn, is that Nintendo isn’t necessarily always better than anything else. We’re at the point where a significant portion of the roster is Nintendo. A large amount of series are represented, and they’re some of the biggest and best.

When you look at the characters that are left, and that Nintendo fans want for Smash, you have to admit we’re 100% in “side character” territory. While Ashley, BWD, Waluigi, Dixie, etc...are all great characters, 3 of those 4 are supporting characters, and 2 of those supporting characters are in smaller franchises for Nintendo. Doesn’t mean money makes the decisions, but when you compare the significance of Wario Ware/Ashley to a larger franchise like Tekken/Heihachi, Resident Evil/Leon, Devil May Cry/Dante, etc..., it’s clear what a lot of fans (non-Nintendo) would be more interested in.

There are even some 3rd party picks I see that I do not believe have any sort of shot (I’m not going to state that for now because I’m not looking to start a flame war). I don’t think people who want first parties are stupid, rather, they’re fans that want their favorites just like me. I simply think at this point first-party picks don’t have as much of a leg to stand on considering the vision of the game, and the fact that this 2nd pass is happening because of “the success of the first”, which obviously was entirely 3rd party, and partially not requested by Smash fans.

Some people think Heavy won't be in Smash. Maybe. *sniff* Maybe...

These are dark horses/sleeper/out there picks I could see as DLC fighter 5 BTW.

Agumon, Amaterasu, Chosen Undead, Dovahkiin and KOS-MOS.

On one hand I'm expecting Doom Slayer, Crash, Ryu Hayabusa, Namco or Capcom rep being DLC fighter 5 but at the same time I got a gut feeling Sakurai might surprise us once more with someone we don't expect.

Anyone else who could fit into this bill?

The Biggest issue I have with this poll in practicality is that no character broke over a 1000 votes. "Oh boy, we now know 646 people would buy Geno." Comparing this to the millions of people who play Smash Bros? None of this should be compelling evidence. It was destined to come up short but this ended up being below my ecpectations.

I've also got a good feeling on Steve. Given Nintendo's and Microsoft's relationship that Microsoft is willing to let Sakurai use another of their character and I can see that being Steve given Sakurai being a fan and loving Minecraft. I'll be kinda surprise if he's a Mii Costume which I feel Master Chief would more likely to be if Halo were to get any representation.
Halo is weird about this stuff. For its only other two guest appearances in fighting games, they’ve felt the need to create all-new characters. Dead or Alive had to create a new SPARTAN character. Killer Instinct had to create a new Arbiter instead of using Thel Vadam. They’re very stickler about making sure crossovers don’t interfere with cannon. You’d hope it would be different for Smash considering, well, it’s Smash. But we don’t really know.

We’re probably just destined for a Spartan mii Fighter costume and that’s it.

To be fair, the second pass couldn't have been decided because of the success of the first. If the Banjo presentation was filmed only a few days after Hero's, then neither Hero or Banjo were likely out by the time Nintendo greenlit more characters. If anything, the base characters would've had more of an influence.

But you already know my opinion. Third-parties aren't automatically superior - it all depends on who they choose. Given the reaction to most of these DLC characters save Banjo, my beliefs have only been reaffirmed.

Man, I will say one thing though.

I'm gonna feel real stupid if Dovahkinn actually makes an appearance after I've given up on them altogether. Lol

They literally said, to my knowledge, they were making more because of the success of the DLC already.

It’s not based on the base roster.

Or, at the very least, the presale of the Fighter Pass.

The reactions you see of people disappointed with characters like Hero, Terry, or Joker are of people that are within the Smash bubble. I have found over the years that for folks who do not play 3rd party titles, of COURSE they aren’t going to find 3rd parties exciting.

While I don’t have a problem with the characters in question, I’m not going to be convinced that a character like Ashley, who already has a role in the game and is a side character from a C-D list franchise from Nintendo, would pack more of a punch overall than a character from a well known 3rd party series.

To a Nintendo-only fan? Maybe. To everybody else? Hardly.

Kratos, Scorpion, Kazuya, and Crash Bandicoot. This is all I want. I won’t be upset if they don’t show up considering the stars aligned and gave me Banjo. Heck, I’d probably take and be happy with a Fortnite character. But obviously, I have my preferences.

Ok these popularity polls are great and all, but we should take a step back and see how it really ties in to what we’ll be seeing on the roster.

When I looked at various popularity polls about a year ago, I didn’t see Terry and Dragon Quest Hero at all, and didn’t see Joker that high.
So only 1/4 of the fighters Pass characters (Banjo-Kazooie) so far are evidence that these Smash Community Polls align with what Sakurai has in mind.

It’s not based on the base roster.
If that's true, then that basically means they based it all off the success of PP and Joker.

Sakurai mentioned the additional characters thing in the Banjo presentation, which was filmed only a few days after Hero's. Right off the bat, we know Banjo's sales couldn't have been a factor, and unless Hero's presentation was filmed literally two or three days before he was released, Hero couldn't have been a factor either.

So no, I don't believe them if that's what they're claiming. Unless people went crazy buying PP and Joker, I think it's more likely they made the decision after seeing the sales of the game itself, not the DLC. But even if I'm wrong and they did decide to add more characters because of the success of the DLC characters so far, that still doesn't push the narrative that Nintendo is making this decision because third-parties sell well. Joker alone can't carry that argument.

I'm not surprised Geno is the number one pick, but like. Heavy, Reimu, Agumon, I had no idea they were so popular. i'd be really excited to get Heavy.

I wish I could hurry up and finish my Gears grinding. I want to hop into DQXIS before I get too close to LM3 coming out, but at the same time, I have a hankering to play Borderlands 3. I loved the first two, and I’ve had some nostalgia trips over the last few months anyway...nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

It’s as if I’ve been taken back to my high school and early college years, playing certain games with friends and absolutely loving it. I think that’s part of what makes Gears 5 so addicting to me...I played Gears 1 so much as a teen, and this game reminds me of it. The more I see of Borderlands 3, the more it takes me back to playing 1 and 2.

If only I had more money.

Well technically. All 5 characters have already sold very well because of everyone who bought the fighters pass.

That and the highest placing character only has under 700 votes on top of the main poll conductors having noted bases with particular biases.
700 doesn't even begin to crack 0.01% of the base.

It's only an extreme minority of the base and that minority is only from very select few places.

The online smash polls are ridiculously small in the grand scheme of things, and they have obvious biases depending on where it gets its responses from.

Interesting info to look at, but does not paint the entire picture accurately.

I wonder how the votes would be if those of us on smashboards voted. Someone should make a poll for us.

Why do people talk about these polls like they actually think that people believe they will reflect the DLC? It’s just a way to see where the communities opinions lie.

But it doesn't even do that, considering it polled about 7k of the player base, when we have 14m+ owners...

That still doesn't do a thing for the first-party vs third-party debate though. All Nintendo would've known at the time is that people were very interested in DLC. People bought the pass without even having a clue as to what they'd get, so neither side should be using this as evidence for Nintendo knowing what type of characters sell best.

Joker, Terry, and Hero all got in because Sakurai has a love for the series, and wanted them in Smash for a while. So I can see more DLC characters being based on how much Sakurai loves their series, so things like Steve and uh...

What other series does Sakurai like?

I still really doubt we’ll be getting first party picks. All the first party picks left are side-characters and low-popularity franchises. As much as I would love an Astral Chain Rep, you gotta acknowledge that third parties will probably sell better at this point.

I hate how this implies he doesn’t like Banjo-Kazooie and he was just bending to the fanbase’s will.

I doubt he hates the series, but the fanbase wanting BK over the years was the biggest reason they were even considered.

All the first party picks left are side-characters and low-popularity franchises.
What's wrong with side characters?
And also, there's plenty of popular franchises that need characters, dk, loz, kirby, xenoblade, just to name a few.
