, I don’t think it’s a bad thing to realize any remaining characters from 1st party games aren’t as big as folks think. But that’s ok. It doesn’t diminish the character’s value, or the fact that people like the character.
I do think, though, that one thing the Smash fan base hasn’t necessarily learned, and it may never learn, is that Nintendo isn’t necessarily always better than anything else. We’re at the point where a significant portion of the roster is Nintendo. A large amount of series are represented, and they’re some of the biggest and best.
When you look at the characters that are left, and that Nintendo fans want for Smash, you have to admit we’re 100% in “side character” territory. While Ashley, BWD, Waluigi, Dixie, etc...are all great characters, 3 of those 4 are supporting characters, and 2 of those supporting characters are in smaller franchises for Nintendo. Doesn’t mean money makes the decisions, but when you compare the significance of Wario Ware/Ashley to a larger franchise like Tekken/Heihachi, Resident Evil/Leon, Devil May Cry/Dante, etc..., it’s clear what a lot of fans (non-Nintendo) would be more interested in.
There are even some 3rd party picks I see that I do not believe have any sort of shot (I’m not going to state that for now because I’m not looking to start a flame war). I don’t think people who want first parties are stupid, rather, they’re fans that want their favorites just like me. I simply think at this point first-party picks don’t have as much of a leg to stand on considering the vision of the game, and the fact that this 2nd pass is happening because of “the success of the first”, which obviously was entirely 3rd party, and partially not requested by Smash fans.
