I don't see why a creative medium needs such strict rules anyway. Successful blending of magic and technology have been done countless times.
In my opinion, magic's existence makes science less interesting and less important. Why bother creating a vast and different alien culture to explain why the "monsters" are bad when you can just say "they're demons from hell". Why create and describe intricate manuals and rules for how this gadget works or why that planet's atmosphere is that way when you can just say "it's magic". It's boring.
I mean, I'd sooner point at say, Final Fantasy than superhero media. Breaking out of the box is what helped make some media truly stand out, look at Evangelion for example, it's drastically different from most other mech anime at the time and that unique-at-the-time style made it stand out because it didn't merely do the typical mech anime ****. Or see MHA, MHA handles shonen tropes VERY differently to most of the stuff in the anime industry these days, including a tournament arc that refuses to do the typical tournament arc ****.
But what about people who like the box. If everyone's thinking outside of the box, then nobody is thinking inside the box and those people's desires aren't met. Sure, you can be great by revolutionizing a medium and changing how everyone thinks about it, or you can be great by taking an established formula/rule set and being the best damn example of it you can be.
I hate that phrase "the exception that proves the rule," it doesn't make sense. If there's an "exception" then the rule is wrong, it always comes off as basically "true, but that doesn't count because it goes against my point."
I mean... it's true. The exception that proves the rule highlights the very specific and unlikely circumstances that are required for the rule to be broken, and why they should generally be stuck to unless you're incredibly skilled.
Snake what the hell are you talking about, Star Trek is STILL popular and it's STILL getting new stuff. I never saw anything related to Star Trek yet even I caught wind of the movies, the games, the Netflix one, etc
Wait what. There's a netflix show? I know about the stuff on CBS All-Access (which has an extremely limited audience as a subscription streaming service). But I was under the impression that the last few movies bombed and that the franchise was being put to rest outside of that extremely specialized content.
Also, can we please get another Trek show/movie set in the far future. I'm sick of original series prequels with less advanced technology.
What about Doom, a universe set in the far future and packed to the brim with sci-fi tropes, but where the main conflict is centered around Hell and demons?
Doom also said stories in game are like stories in porn. They're not exactly following the rules to begin with.
What? Almost all of Star Trek has come out since Star Wars has existed, the only thing of note that came out before 1977 was the original series. Since Star Wars came out there has been The Next Generation and all of the other shows, the movie sequels, then more recently the JJ Abrams trilogy, Discovery, and the upcoming Picard series.
Also, what about Metroid, Star Fox, Halo, Mass Effect, Cyberpunk 2077, Metal Gear? There's a ****load of sci-fi games.
All franchises that have notoriously struggled to be top sellers or are dead franchises.
