anyways I'm super close to that Switch purchase

one more thing tho

I'm not sure if I should get the standard $300 Switch right now, or wait for the handheld only, albeit cheaper $200 Switch Lite coming in a couple weeks.

If I do get the standard one, I may need to hold off on the Fighter's Pass til later down the road due to the increased costs. The soonest I can see myself getting the pass in that case, is probably Christmas.

If get the Switch Lite, I'll probably be able to get everything, day 1. Tho with it being handheld only I'll be missing the docked experience, meaning I won't be able to play couch multiplayer with friends and family, which assuming Smash is one heck of a party game series, that'd be quite the missed experience. (That being said tho, I'd need to fork over even more cash for more controllers in order to have more than two players at once.)

decisions decisions

to help make my decision much easier, I've got a couple questions to ask y'all

  1. Do you prefer the Switch in handheld mode or in dock mode?
  2. How delicate would y'all say is the standard Switch? With all the detachable parts like the joycons and stuff, it sure looks like it could be. I tend to be a total klutz when it comes to electronic devices, and I don't wanna spend $300 if I'm gonna end up busting the dang thing pretty easily
  3. Does a game as ambitious as Smash Ultimate work well in handheld mode? I'm afraid there could be some caveats when it comes to the decreased capabilities in handheld mode, especially with stuff like 8 player Smash, ice climbers, some of the bigger stages and so on.
  4. How fun is the couch multiplayer compared to past titles?
  5. overall, which do you think I should go with? I'm open to either at the end of the day. Both seem to have their pros and cons, so it doesn't really matter either way.
Thanks for the feedback, as always
1. Definitely prefer the Switch docked, and that's because I usually play the Switch exclusively multiplayer
2. From my experience the Switch can take a licking and keep on ticking lol. Because I'm a klutz I dropped it like once or twice and had no problems. The only issue I had with my switch so far is joycon drift, which is a common issue.
3. Yep, definitely. Smash is fine in handheld mode imo.
4. Couch multiplayer is really great this time around. Seems to be one of the highlights of the console
5. It all depends, really. I'd definitely recommend the normal Switch if you are looking for a better multiplayer experience and quality overall, but I think the Switch Lite is the cheaper option if you're looking for a less expensive option. still you'd be paying for accessories as well eventually I'd assume, but it's really all up to you

there's no guarantee the switch lite's built in control sticks won't suffer from the same drifting problems, at which point you're royally ****ed unless you send the entire thing off to be repaired (whereas at least joycons can be detached and the system can be played with another controller while they're being repaired)

Hmmm... it's decided then.

I'm gonna be picking myself up a standard Nintendo Switch within the next few days

Will get a copy of Ultimate alongside it, and thanks to Twitch prime, I'm gonna be getting a years worth of Nintendo Switch Online for free.

Might not buy the fighter's pass just yet... Soon tho

Thanks for feedback, guys!

Shame as both are essentially Nintendo characters despite the third party tag and recent ports elsewhere.

But I digress, there remains a chance for both of us!
Honestly. I don’t want to see one without the other. I think both together would be a bigger spectacle than either on their own. Imagine if they were revealed and released together.

I kind of hold the same opinion about Crash and Spyro.

They can hold their own.

Crash will also easily hold his own without Spyro.

What causes the drifting anyways? I thought just early models had it and new ones had been fixed by now
I've had mine for 2 years now and constant Smash-abuse yet the most I've experienced is the right stick sometimes drifting in FE3H in particular when moving the camera on 3rd person view

Sonic Adventure came out 20 years ago today. Neat.
Tfw people think celebrating the anniversary of the launch title of one the most underappreciated consoles in history is more important than celebrating the anniversary of the console itself

THE DREAMCAST DIDN'T DIE FOR THIS BLASPHEMY!

iirc someone disassembled it and found out that the contacts inside the controller had been ground down into a powdery substance from repeated use and wear

whatever conductive material they use for the contacts seems to be very brittle

I'l do ya better and give ya a bunch of em:

SoulCalibur
Crazy Taxi
Shenmue
Marvel VS Capcom 2
Jet Set Radio
Power Stone
Skies of Arcadia
Space Channel 5
Phantasy Star Online

For being a system that flopped hard, the Dreamcast had it's fair share of great titles

Went to Gamestop for the first time in ages today and it's like they forgot the "Game" part in "Game"stop. Merchandising everywhere, even outnumbering the games.

Also Castlevania Order of Ecclesia for 35€ used and Pokken DX 50€ used? No thanks.

In addition to above, Ecco the Dolphin, another SEGA IP left to rot.

Get the regular Switch, mate. You have more options and it's not like you'll need the fighters pass for three months given how we went ****ing four months before Joker even got information.

Apparently, merchandising is significantly more profitable for GameStop/EB Games than physical game sales (thanks to digital game sales being more convenient), so they're putting more of an emphasis on that.

It's a bit of a shame, but I can't complain too much - it's the only way for me to get One Piece merchandise that doesn't involve taking a train ride for six hours or ordering sight-unseen from some online store, not knowing until it arrives if I'll be getting some bootleg figure or a blind box.

Still, I prefer to buy my Switch games physically when I can - the Switch doesn't have a ton of storage space for larger digital titles, even with a larger micro SD card.

I went to Gamestop to buy Astral Chain and they didn’t even have enough copies to sell me one and still cover their pre-orders. Like, I bought the game digitally, even though I don’t like to do that, because I wanted to play it that day.

Let's be honest, Sega killed itself due to sheer incompetence and infighting. Their consoles weren't bad per se, maybe even too advanced for its time. IP wise, they rival Nintendo, Capcom and Konami.

Hah, if only, it was an entire wall full of Funkos. At least plushies can be cute.

This reminds me of an idea I had once. I called it Super Smash Bros X (pronounced Cross). And the conceit was that you would take the amount of slots available in Ultimate (at launch) and divide them up evenly between the companies involved at the time. So there would be the same amount of Nintendo characters as ones from SEGA, Capcom, Konami, Namco, and Square Enix. It’s at least a fun thought experiment.
