I believe that popularity chart was based on a small sample size, as in, it’s not actually characteristic of a majority of the fanbase.

Though, I am not all that surprised that certain characters are up there. I just wouldn’t take it as any true indicator.

Not only that, but it was from a twitter thread where some Western users posted which got mixed with the Japanese results, so that chart isn't very reliable.

that japan/US/europe most popular chart is putting me in the mindset that we might be seeing lloyd as soon as challenger pack 5

sora is obviously extremely popular but he also means going through disney so i think he's much less likely to pop up anytime soon
There was a very small sample size for that chart

The Steven Universe movie was neat. Spinel waa cool.

I saw a Professor Venomous compilation and now I'm wondering if I should watch OK KO...

I believe that Crash is a strong candidate for Fighter 5 too.

Not a locked addition, but highly likely nonetheless.

To me it's either Crash, Doomguy, an RE character, or ninja Ryu.

But I'm ready to be proven wrong by Sakurai

Lloyd's cool but I played five hours of tales of vesperia so I can definitively say Yuri is cooler

So if Ryu Hayabusa is in the game then does that mean he'll also be called Ryu or will they call him (Ryu) Hayabusa?

also StormC StormC imagine me actually getting a whole second character i wanted tbh
They would probably call him ryu but Xander will announce the name with a different inflection from SF ryu

Woah what happened, I can no longer upload images from links from imgur.com??? What the hell???

Anyways I noticed that Nintendo of America has not tweeted at all yesterday. I know it's Sunday but they've tweeted at least once during Sunday usually. Also for some reason trying to upload a image here does not WORK AT ALL.

It has Geno as a major European want despite SMRPG not being a thing for a decade here so I highly doubt it

I was surprised to see Layton not in the top 10 European list, but this sample seems ridiculously small and has a few holes in it (i.e: people from the other continents/countries "voting" in others)

Decent to look at for some insight, but nothing conclusive.

If Disney had real courage, they would put Brave Little Toaster on Disney+.

Why does everyone want DOOM Slayer or Master Chief so bad? They totally miss the tone of Smash Bros
The most baffling thing here is the implication that Master Chief and Doom Slayer are tonally the same.

anyways I'm super close to that Switch purchase

one more thing tho

I'm not sure if I should get the standard $300 Switch right now, or wait for the handheld only, albeit cheaper $200 Switch Lite coming in a couple weeks.

If I do get the standard one, I may need to hold off on the Fighter's Pass til later down the road due to the increased costs. The soonest I can see myself getting the pass in that case, is probably Christmas.

If get the Switch Lite, I'll probably be able to get everything, day 1. Tho with it being handheld only I'll be missing the docked experience, meaning I won't be able to play couch multiplayer with friends and family, which assuming Smash is one heck of a party game series, that'd be quite the missed experience. (That being said tho, I'd need to fork over even more cash for more controllers in order to have more than two players at once.)

decisions decisions

to help make my decision much easier, I've got a couple questions to ask y'all

  1. Do you prefer the Switch in handheld mode or in dock mode?
  2. How delicate would y'all say is the standard Switch? With all the detachable parts like the joycons and stuff, it sure looks like it could be. I tend to be a total klutz when it comes to electronic devices, and I don't wanna spend $300 if I'm gonna end up busting the dang thing pretty easily
  3. Does a game as ambitious as Smash Ultimate work well in handheld mode? I'm afraid there could be some caveats when it comes to the decreased capabilities in handheld mode, especially with stuff like 8 player Smash, ice climbers, some of the bigger stages and so on.
  4. How fun is the couch multiplayer compared to past titles?
  5. overall, which do you think I should go with? I'm open to either at the end of the day. Both seem to have their pros and cons, so it doesn't really matter either way.
Thanks for the feedback, as always

We got Snake, Joker, and Bayonetta. At this point, the idea of Smash characters needing to have one specific tone is out the window. Even among Nintendo characters, Shulk and Samus are very different from Mario and Pikachu in terms of their series' tone.

I'd say get the normal Switch, but it's your choice in the end.

Soooo... I'm planning to finally get myself a Switch as well as a copy of Ultimate within the next few weeks...

Do y'all have any other games you'd recommend to me?
Bit late to respond to this, but just saw your post and other people's responses to it

I'd recommend
Super Mario Odyssey
Breath of the Wild (if you don't already have it on the Wii U)
Splatoon 2
Mario Kart 8 DX (ditto)
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (sure are a lot of Wii U ports aren't there)
Super Mario Maker 2
Mario + Rabbids (it's better than it looks, plus it seems to be permanently on sale)

There are a few other games I have, but they're more a matter of personal tastes

Depends on the situation but if you're going handheld only you better be capable of cleaning that screen frequently. Sometimes I wanna play with a TV, sometimes I wanna use the toilet and play games at the same time.

If you play local multiplayer often then the Lite is not for you.

How delicate would y'all say is the standard Switch? With all the detachable parts like the joycons and stuff, it sure looks like it could be. I tend to be a total klutz when it comes to electronic devices, and I don't wanna spend $300 if I'm gonna end up busting the dang thing pretty easily
You can send joycons off to repair if they drift.

If you drop the Switch in handheld mode the joycons will take most of the impact if you have the regular. Unsure about the Lite, but I assume it's the same, but the damage might mess up the whole system. It's not gonna get torn apart from a single drop or anything, though.

Does a game as ambitious as Smash Ultimate work well in handheld mode? I'm afraid there could be some caveats when it comes to the decreased capabilities in handheld mode, especially with stuff like 8 player Smash, ice climbers, some of the bigger stages and so on.
Yeah it does. I use a wireless GCN controller so I have no problems.

How fun is the couch multiplayer compared to past titles?
It's Smash Bros., about the same as the rest. Being able to do co-op online is fun though.

overall, which do you think I should go with? I'm open to either at the end of the day. Both seem to have their pros and cons, so it doesn't really matter either way.
idk man its your money

1) Docked

2) my Launch switch is still in super good condition. If you dont have kids, dont have gorilla hands and dont treat the switch like its 10 bucks, and treat it like that 300 bucks it is, your fine

3)when I do play smash, I only play docked

4) I dont play couch co op

5)Normal switch

Snake ended that "feel" 12 years ago.

Ports don't mean anything, and most series are getting ports. People need to stop associating every Nintendo business decision with Smash. It's not even their biggest IP!

Also careful not to multi-post, my friend. The mods don't like it.
It’s not their biggest IP. But it is their biggest event.

I agree, Crash feels like a possibilty now more than ever thanks to Banjo, the door for characters from Western developers might be open.
