Dunno about that, a fair amount of games have you name the protagonist and the story is just fine and is even voiced. Its just the character never gets directly called by name and is just referred to by title/random nickname instead.

Here's an idea. After the Fighter Pass is done, a new one focused on 1st parties is revealed and the theme is Nintendo Switch.
Basically, adding characters from the current generation. If we have a cut off point of March next year to get in, what characters would you want in it?

Mine would be

1. From ARMS, Ribbon Girl
2. From Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Rex with Pyra and Mythra
3. From Kirby Star Allies, Bandanna Dee (using elemental spears)
4. From Fire Emblem Three Houses, Edelgard (I prefer Claude as a character but I'm thinking in terms of moveset.)
5. From the Gen 8 Pokemon revealed thus far, Corviknight

I liked it, but it didn’t really feel like a movie. More like an extended episode. If they called it that I wouldn’t have minded, but because they called it a movie I kinda expected more.

You know, there are plenty of fantastic stories with silent protags (Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest and Persona, hell, Three Houses has an amazing story despite Byleth having the personality of a slab of wood) I'm not a fan of them in general either, but saying the story is going to be terrible is a bit premature.

Also you can just refer to them as Officer Howard. Their twin's name is Akira so that also works (since, you know, twins)

Ok. First. You made those names up.

Second. It’s not just that they’re silent. Heck, they talk in the trailers so we know that’s not true. But that they’ll lack personality. Look at every other IP they’ve created or had a major hand in. Even back when they were just Kamiya’s team at Capcom. Dante, Viewtiful Joe, Bayonetta, The Wonderful Ones, 2B, even Raiden in MGRR. You know who they are, you know what they’re about, and they leave an impression. I feel that lacking that personality will detract from the quality of the story (because they’re just going to feel like observers rather than characters) and will make the whole title feel less memorable as a result.

Sticker Star, according to Wikipedia, sold around 1.9 million copies. Awakening, if I remember correctly, sold 2.3 million.

First week Japan-only sales of Three Houses totaled over 150,000 physical copies, with a large amount of estimated digital sales as well due to vouchers. Japan-only first week sales of Color Splash? Barely over 20,000.

Fire Emblem's sales since Awakening have been on an upswing, but Paper Mario's have been going down.

To be fair, the latest Paper Mario entry was released at the very end of a failing console's life, and said entry was following a style similar to the least popular game in the series. Saying PM's sales are following a downward trend isn't saying much, especially since SoV had mediocre sales too because it was released late into the 3DS's life. Wait until we get a Paper Mario game on the Switch, then make the comparison again.

At worst, I'd say PM is equal to FE. Clearly it still has the firepower to gather interest from fans, if the TTYD trend a few weeks ago didn't indicate that.
