And let's not forget PASBR had 24 characters--Ultimate has over 70. I will say there are some--strange decisions. Why remove the Fire Mario alt color, when you can remove his Waluigi one? It fits Luigi more to have a Waluigi alt. Or get rid of Wario, since Wario's in the actual game. Little things like that are weird. Also, I would have much preferred Mega Man having alternate outfits of those in his final Smash, like EXE and Volnutt. I tend to care less about alt colors more than alt costumes to the point where I never use alt colors. It is, however, harder when it comes to third parties. Sega really dropped the ball with Sonic's alts--would have been nice if he could be the color of his friends (yellow, black, pink, purple) and have their shoe designs. And I try to avoid using the Random button to avoid getting alt colors (some look absolutely hideous), and instead use a random number generator. But I do play Lemmy, rather than Bowser Jr, Shirtless Shulk, and do plan on playing Three and Eight, rather than Hero's default. I like the variety alt costumes provide more than alt colors.

As it is, I don't think the number of alt costumes/colors is the problem--more the decisions made, some by Sakurai, and others that are out of his control, restrained by second/third party restrictions.

Not to mention. Then you have characters like Villager and Inkling. Plus Bowser Jr. There’s no real way to organize their costumes and what on earth would they even do for BJ and the Koopa Kids? A lot of these characters would need completely newly designed costumes.....

They've toned it down over the years but "adult" themes existed from Pokemon from the start. Gen 1 had bike gangs, casinos, and the mafia. Oh right, and Team Rocket murdered a Marowak.

Let's not forget about that lady who gives you the TM for Fling in Sun/Moon though. The one who's husband died in a vehicle / Ride Pokemon accident, who's Machamp refused to stay inside a pokeball since? Yeah.

Alcohol existing in that world isn't really that weird.

As I see it, adult theme were in Gen 1, then they pulled back on them majorly as villains became more cartoonish and then after Gen V (who's main villain was an abused child) they started coming back in.

The mildly creepy abandoned ship in Ruby and Sapphire morphing into the scathing commentary of Japanese working conditions that was Sea Mauville is a prime example.

I just did an auditon for a physcological horror game. Pretty proud of it.

So then I auditioned for a character with the most screechy, annoying, 13-year-old-experiencing-puberty type voice I could muster.

That was pretty fun.

Ironically, in the in game concept art, Color Splash had a lot more unique Toads that went unused for some reason.

After replaying TTYD last year, I kinda appreciate Nintendo trying something new with SPM, Sticker Star and Color Splash. Sadly the last two were a bit dissapointing.

Honestly, people blame SS for PMs downfall because they don't want to admit that Super Paper Mario started showing some noticable flaws present in modern Paper Mario due to its story.

Eh, not really imo, abotu the receptions I mean, lots of peoples does mentions that SPM had alot of changes that weren't necessary or not well implemented, it didn't got the beast reaction when it come out, but it generally get a pass on later on due the story and the character.

So really, if the next PM set after SPM had a story as good and came back to the style of the first two, I think everyone would have been happy and perhaps forgive SPM for going a strange way gameplay wise and just pass it as a weird experiemnt, but alas, Sticker Star was even worse despite coming back to the more "traditional" RPG way and the story & the characters was all around a let down.
