Question: Would Sega CD and 32X games count for this round as Genesis titles? They're kind of between consoles and peripherals.

Job #26: Labyrinth Floor (Fatal Labyrinth)

Screenshot_20220312-191233_YouTube.jpg

Fatal Labyrinth is a dungeon crawler for the Sega Genesis designed by long time SEGA and Naughty Dog designer and the director of Sonic 3, Hirokazu Yasuhara. It's main gimmick being that it has roguelike elements. Every level and the monsters in it are randomized.

The layout of the arena would carry over these elements. It would resemble a corridor from the game and contain enemies and obstacles scattered about the pitch at random. In addition, the game's UI would appear at the bottom of the screen but instead of displaying stats and monster actions, it would show the score of the game on the left and running commentary about player actions and the status of hazards on the right.

Marble Zone

Marble Zone is this game's Temple, both in aesthetic and design - it is two-layered with stairs on the sides to go in, and one ball on each layer. The top has you play on a transparent glass - with the instantly recognisable grass and buildings around it - so you can see the below field that is the underground, though it still has a split screen. If all players are on the top layer the split screen will disappear and Flickies will appear to watch on the bottom layer, and for the bottom the split screen will also disappear but the Flickies will only appear as shadows. The balls cannot be transfered between layers no matter what.

Atlantis (Eternal Champions)
1647134449674.png

Hailing from one of the first few fighting games to be directly built for a console and not arcades first, this stadium takes place outside the city of Atlantis. The field is covered with shallow water, meaning the players will be constantly splashing around while they play! Trident (the green guy in the screenshot) will appear sometimes to interfere with the match. He can knock players over with his extending trident arm, or just steal the ball and kick it away from players.

Job 26: Flying Battery Zone (Sonic 3 & Knuckles/Sonic Mania)

My personal favorite zone from the Sonic series, Flying Battery Zone is a level taking place inside one of Robotnik's mighty airships. In this game, it's less used to spread destruction and has instead been converted to house a great open-air stadium that hovers above Angel Island. It's still themed after the electric and technological components of the zone, with the stands full of badniks and animal friends alike, all eager to see who could win this great game. There are special switches on the field that can activate magnetic contraptions on either end of the pitch that suck the ball towards those particular goals. Tricky teams will have to learn to activate these magnet traps in ways that'll let them get the advantage, but be warned because they only last for so long, meaning a keen-eyed defender can stall them out. It's not a free goal just because the momentum is propelling you to one side or the other!

On top of that, being close to the clouds means you're liable to bouts of bad weather, as Sonic Mania showed us. Storm clouds have a chance to gather above the stadium and make the metal field slick with rain, making handling even more unwieldy. It's a grand game of tricks and traps high in the air, so try not to lose your head!

Mega Drive Stadium:
Green Hill Zone (Sonic) (Resubmission & Rewritten)

Green Hill Zone is one of iconic and well-known Sonic locations that appeared in Sonic games. It's actually a first Zone in First game on Mega Drive/Genesis and it's Sonic's home.
Green Hill Zone is a tropical area that has Palms, Totems, Hills and High Mountains that were inspired by California state from USA and the style is reminiscent of Pop Artist Elzin Suzuki.

As a stadium in Sega World Cup, it would a Sonic's home stadium and the Hazards are Badniks that invaded the field and they can damage the player if they have contact with it. Badniks can be destructible by attacking them with moves. There are some booster that can increase someone's speed while running with ball (Occasionally, the booster can launch the ball straightforward)
The Cameos are Animal buddies that spectate the match on Green Hill Zone. Also the there are Loop-de-loops in far Background behind the stadium.

And that's time!

Firstly, some job results:

Job #24: Alex Kidd's moveset
A self congratulation here, as Alex Kidd's moveset has been voted on and it appears my one was voted for. Thank you everyone!

Thanks for those who voted, and thanks to Qwerty for submitting a moveset too! Alex Kidd will join Sonic, Opa-Opa, Chie and AiAi in the starting roster as a result! Three more spots on that starting roster, will Ulala and Ristar be joining them or will they be sitting on the unlockable bench with Tails and Kurumi?

Blowing the whistle on Job #25 Referee results:
  • Asobin: 5
  • Buono: 8
  • Football Manager: 0
  • Bug: 11
Looks like the scrappy Sega Saturn psuedo star will be our referee. Luckily he's quite small so he'll probably not get in the way of the action too much!

Future movesets will allow Bug to be involved in animations, so feel free to include that.

-------------

Now we're going to go on to today's jobs!

Job #26: Mega Drive/Genesis Stadiums

We have a selection of brand new stadiums to sort through so let's get started!
  • Labyrinth Floor will have our players trying to scramble across the pitch and not get taken out by enemies or traps along the way! Submitted by PuyoWitch PuyoWitch who is currently planning their own labyrinth with Minotaur.
  • Marble Zone is a unique two layered pitch which is no doubt going to cause our new referee some headaches as he flits between both fields trying to keep up with the action. Submitted by Wario Wario Wario Wario Wario Wario who has cunningly taken the 'Welcome to the Next Level' slogan of Sega to a logical extreme.
  • Atlantis is supposed to be a mythical lost city, but Torgo the Bear Torgo the Bear has managed to not only locate it, but terraform it into a beautiful aquatic field. No doubt when Ecco arrives he's going to adore this place. Just...watch out for the brutal attacks of Trident...Eternal Champions tends to be pretty brutal.
  • Flying Battery Zone is a floating stadium high above Angel Island that uses tricky electromagnetic traps to give a particular team an advantage. If you want to score and soar, you'll need to master the magnets here! Submitted by Flyboy Flyboy who is taking their name extremely literally with this wonderful skybound stadium.
  • Green Hill Zone is of course, an absolute classic. Probably the most well known stage in any Sega game ever, the rolling greenery and lush palm trees have an oddly relaxing feel to them. As per usual though this beautiful stadium has been invaded by Badniks that you'll no doubt have to smash your way through to score. Submitted by our own classic, Tankman from Newgrounds Tankman from Newgrounds
What a variety! Dungeons! Temples! The Sea! The Sky! The rolling hills tinged with nostalgic memories!

Time to get voting on which of these fab five will be our winner today! Three votes each, your own in third place only! Let's go! 24 HOURS!

----------------------------

Job #27: Submit a moveset for Ulala

The swinging soccer super starlet is in need of some moves to show off on the field!

As per normal for moveset tasks: 48 hours to get a moveset in for Ulala!

----------------------------

That's it for today! We'll see you again tomorrow sports fans!

Character #27: Ulala

Media Nickname: The Best Reporter in the Galaxy

Stats:
Speed: 3
Strength:3
Defense: 2
Shooting: 7
Passing: 8
Skill: 7

Super-Star Move: Top Rating
Ulala does a short dance and strikes a pose (like the end of this video). Charged up with the potent Dance Energy, Ulala jumps and spins around herself to kick the ball with a flying kick. As an aesthetic, the camera will focus on her like a TV show, with Space Channel 5 logo and 100% indicated on the screen along with her heart count.

All-Star Move: Chu Beam
Ulala pulls out her two Tension Blasters from their holster and points them forward. For a short while, she will not be able to perform any conventional maneuvers but she’ll shoot green blasts with her guns while exclaiming “chu!” instead. These beams will slightly knock opponents away. If the button is held, she’ll charge up and release a single, strong charge of pink hearts that can be stored and stuns the opponent on contact. Rhythmic special button taps increase the damage dealt by beams.

Star-Burst Move: Morolian Invasion
Ulala shouts as four Morolians from Space Channel 5 appears under her. These aliens rapidly run through the field while carrying her, throwing and catching her. While this move is hard to steer, it goes for a long distance and is good at as a defensive move as Morolians have large hitboxes. Rhythmic special button taps increase the damage dealt by Morolians.

Goal-Star Move: Guitar Battle
Ulala pulls out and wails on her guitar and releases a shockwave that sends any goal attempts coming in her way. If the button is held instead of pressed, she’ll continue strumming her guitar, sending weak shockwaves slows down the opponent players. Timing is the key to this move’s effectiveness.

Goal Victories:
  1. Ulala brandishes her Tension Blasters and points them in different directions while boasting “We beat them hands down!”
  2. Ulala does her iconic “Space Channel 5” pose while exclaiming the name of her show as "Ulala's Swingin' Report Show, Special Broadcast!"
  3. Ulala struts towards the camera and speaks to her microphone, saying “We’ll return to you with an interview from the winning team. Stay tuned~!”
MVP:
Ulala dances with four Morolians mimicking her moves. She finishes it by pointing up with her index finger and saying "When it comes to dancing... We are unbeatable, baby!" as spotlights come from nowhere to center on her posse.

Losing:
  1. Ulala stumbles and falls on the ground, resting on her arms and mumbling "When have I ever lost....at dancing?"
  2. Ulala hugs her shoulders and hangs her head.
  3. Ulala turns her back to the camera, looking at something unseen approaching in worry. She says “I’ve got a funky feeling about this!” before the feed cuts to static.
Kit:
Ulala's kit colors are based on her Kinda Funky News Flash ensemble, being a yellow base with blue and white trim. She still wears her headset, gloves, jetpack, and gun holsters.

What time is it?

Sega-Time,-Soldiers.png

Alright, here we go! Let's look at the results of Job #26:
  • Labyrinth Floor: 15
  • Marble Zone: 4
  • Atlantis: 18
  • Flying Battery Zone: 22
  • Green Hill: 7
With that it looks like we're going to be going sky high with Flying Battery Zone which arrives as our new aerial stadium!

----------------------------

Job #27: Ulala's moveset is still in play! 24 hours remain, so get your moveset in!

----------------------------

Time for a new player!

Job #28: Submit a character from the Sega Saturn

Yes, we will be returning later to the many other Sega consoles (Game Gear, 32X, Mega/Sega CD and the Pico) but for now we're going to get the mainstream Sega consoles done first.

Please select a character that debuted during the Sega Saturn era.

The only Saturn character currently unavailable for this job is Bug due to his role as our referee. As talented an actor as he assures us he is, playing two roles at the same time might be a bit too much...

You all have 24 hours to get your Sega Saturn characters in!

NiGHTS
A classic Sega character. NiGHTS is a mainstay face, to the point where their absence from the first All Stars racing game was a regular sticking point for fans. A Nightmaren from Nightopia, who helps humans navigate the dream world. They would float around the field, making them a unique character.

Job #28: Tillis (Burning Rangers)
Tillis.png

Burning Rangers is a hidden gem from the Sega Saturn era created by Yuji Naka, where you play as a group of super-firefighters in mechanical suits. Tillis is one of the two main characters in the game, who are the hot-blooded rookies of the Burning Rangers. While it has never left the Saturn, it is well-loved, and even got its own stage in Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed. The REAL reason to include a Burning Ranger, though? They can have a special playstyle based on the mechanics of the game where you use your rocket-powered suit to make BIG jumps across the stage, and water spraying powers. It would be cool.

Job #28: Clockwork Knight (Clockwork Knight)
1647356054944.png

Clockwork Knight is this gallant little fella and the protagonist of his own side-scrolling adventure of the same name, as well as its sequel. It's a simple game where one must rescue the princess, but the toy-themed aesthetic made it fun and memorable in its own ways as well. Clockwork Knight fights with his key, which can deliver large blows or repeated jabs. This wooden hero finds adventure wherever he goes, and that includes the pitch.

(By the way, for those struggling to find a Saturn character to submit, may I suggest Blue Dragon or another Panzer Dragoon character, Mr. Bones, Queen Gradriel, Sakura Shinguji...lots of great choices still to be considered!)

Job #28: Gradriel De Valendia (Princess Crown)

1647358379074.png

Princess Crown is an action RPG developed by Atlus, more specifically by people who would later form Vanillaware, a team that is famous for making absolutely gorgeous-looking games. This game doesn't disappoint in that regard, it has some amazing art design and looks really good for a 1997 Saturn game, not that the console wasn't capable of making beautiful games such as Astal or Panzer Dragoon Saga.

The protagonist is Gradriel, a recently crowned princess who needs to do some heavy beat 'em up side-scrolling in order to bring peace to her country Valendia and prevent the resurrection of the demon lord Lalva. She may be just 13 years old but she and her fairy friend Arlia who always delivers her majesty her giant sword at the start of each battle.

Not only do I think Gradriel would be a cute sight to see running after a ball, but she also has a plethora of items she can use in battl- I mean, for her super moves. Aside from weapons like axes and daggers, she can also use magic with various artifacts, including summoning goblins, turning her opponents into stone, shooting icicles, and creating a mirror image of herself. She also has some great animations that would reflect into a goofy game like this, such as how she politely covers her mouth while eating food items like cooked meat (which bone she can toss at monsters afterward).

Job #28: Nemissa(and Hitomi Tono)

Nemissa.png

Technically a two for one deal, Nemissa is a benevolant demon who ends up sharing the body of Hitomi Tono in Soul Hackers with the two personalities being able to swap out. Nemissa is the more confident of the two and has access to several different elemental magic types, fire, ice and electric (depending on how you describe Hitomi)

Extremely rare I submit Atlus characters(due to a lack of experience with the titles) but I just bought Soul Hackers on 3DS and it's on my to play list at current so why not? Unfortunately no big write up as this is on my 'to play list' and thus I'm keeping myself in the dark on purpose.

First, the results!

Job #27: Ulala Moveset
osby osby came in clutch with a great moveset for Ulala which will now be her official skills on the pitch. This also means she'll be a starting roster character!

---------------------------

Job #28: Sega Saturn Player

I'm sure Bug is pleased to know he'll be seeing a few console family friendly faces thanks to this round. Here are the sign ups!
  • NiGHTS is everyone's dream team player, the Nightopian is a Sega Superstars veteran and is ready to join his fellow All-Stars on the field where dreams come true! Submitted by their manager and eternal dreamer @Darkonedagger
  • Tillis is here to showcase that her Burning Ranger abilities aren't just limited to putting out fires and saving lives but also translate ironically to setting people's excitement ablaze on the football field! Submitted by her manager and fire drill instructor PuyoWitch PuyoWitch
  • Sir Tongara de Pepperouchau III AKA Pepper AKA the Clockwork Knight is our key to victory in the World Cup. He may be small but he has plenty of experience playing. Being a toy. Hopefully Chelsea sees his performance! Submitted by his manager and toy soldier collector Flyboy Flyboy
  • Gradriel De Valendia is hoping to be crowned MVP when she steps onto the field to defend the honour of whichever team she happens to be on! Submitted by her manager and royal advisor, osby osby
  • Sakura Shinguji is ready to make her big debut. Having experience in acting and on the battlefield, I dare say she'd be more than capable of pulling off some great football theatrics if cheating wasn't against her morals! Submitted by her manager and acting coach Tankman from Newgrounds Tankman from Newgrounds (Originally posted by Tankman's own script writer, cashregister9 cashregister9 )
  • Nemissa hasn't had a body in quite some time, so she's ready to use the current one she's got to experience whatever she can...and that includes the thrill of sportsmanship! Submitted by her manager and unwitting summoner, me, YoshiandToad YoshiandToad
Please vote for your top 3 with your own in third place. I will accept not using Sir Tongara de Pepperouchau's fullname if you vote for him for understandable reasons. You have 24 hours to get those votes in!

Job #29: Submit a sponsor from one of the currently represented series
It's been a little while since we did our last Sponsor job, so now we're going to look at double dipping on Sponsors from represented series.

These can include series players, stadiums, special balls, etc. Currently represented series are as follows:
  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Super Monkey Ball
  • Persona
  • Sega Ninja
  • Fantasy Zone
  • Alex Kidd
  • Space Channel 5
  • Ristar
  • NiGHTS
  • Zaxxon
  • Crazy Taxi
  • Yakuza
  • Bug
  • Arcade Machines(yep I'm counting this as a series)
Please submit a sponsor from one of the above franchises, but remember:
  1. Players cannot be sponsors, so no submitting someone who you wish to submit as a player later(example Kiryu for Yakuza, etc).
  2. Bug, as the referee, also should not be a sponsor although feel free to grab some of the other characters from his game if you so wish.
  3. As NiGHTS is currently up for the vote they also cannot be a sponsor.
You can find the template for sponsors here.

You have 24 hours on this job! Get us some fresh sponsorship deals!

See you tomorrow sports fans!

Job 29: Existing Series Job

1647386513546.png

Sponsorship: Majima Construction

Series: Yakuza

Character: Goro Majima*

Description:
It's as the flyer states - They Build ****!

In Yakuza Kiwami 2, perpetual thorn in Kiryu's side (and also unlikely ally) Goro Majima starts a construction company to work on Kamurocho Hills, a grand housing project in the bustling city of perpetual night. Kiryu himself joins the company as well, as the project gets threatened by loan sharks all-too-willing to send out their goons in an attempt to take out Majima's legitimate business. In these segments the game functions like an RTS with base-building and armies to be taken out.

When this sponsorship is active, a shortened version of the above-linked Majima Construction Anthem will play (approximately 30 seconds) and safety barriers are erected on the field in front of the sponsored player's goal. They aren't exactly in front of the goalie, more off a little bit to the front and the sides, but they're enough to block two direct hits with the ball before crumbling and can make a player's carefully-angled shot a sudden nightmare. Majima's employees may be staying out of the head-busting business this time, but you're never gonna get past their careful planning. In addition, several players will don complementary hard hats, meaning headers can be delivered with great force.

*This may, depending on what is decided, not actually deconfirm Majima as there are plenty of workers at his construction company and he IS a man of many hats, but there's a lot of "depending" in that statement. Also, be sure to watch that video - I think it's hilarious and a great and fun way to advertise a very fun game!

Job #29:

Persoan_4_anime_Tanka.png

Sponsorship: Tanaka's Amazing Commodities

Series: Persona

Character: President Tanaka

Description: "Granter of your desires!

From the Persona series, President Tanaka is a reoccurring character who is both a social link in 3, as well as the host of the home shopping network in Persona 3 and 4, the shopkeeper in Persona 4 Dancing All Night, and runs a dark web black market in 5. He is a smarmy businessman, but a charismatic and loud host!

As your sponsor, Tanaka's Amazing Commodities looks to advertise the products on their program, so for a limited time, your team will get top of the line equipment, not available in any store as a price lower than this!

As the sequence activates, a TV flashes on the screen, and plays the jingle:

As the program starts, we see Tanaka hype up what today's special item is. Each one gives a limited time super boost to some of your teams stats. For example, you get a special pair of soccer shoes (used by the pros!), that boost your speed and sharing...orrrr maybe you would prefer our comfortable and sturdy uniforms! They are made from a tough fabric, so your defense and strength will be unmatched on the field!

Until the end of the jingle, your team gets to demonstrate this amazing new piece of equipment for the people at home! Buy it now, while supplies last!
