1. Cyberspace - Rez is such a stylish and cool piece of work, and the VR sequel is great too. This would be so neat to see.

2. Apartment 203 - I'm in agreement that Roommania is a game Sega loves to reference. I really feel that it would be here.

3. Sega Tower - Another game Sega likes to reference but also I think something more meta with a ton of cameos makes for a really fun stage.

4. Time Traveler - This is just such a strange and cool deep cut that would provide a very unique aesthetic we don't really have right now.

5. Another Super Performance! - Self-vote but hey, I'm still proud of this one.

This was such a difficult selection. The Dice Palace from Gunstar Heroes is one of my favorite sections in any video game. Acropolis was so clever. There were tons of really clever and interesting stages submitted this round so I do hope we can revisit them when the time comes. Really good round.

We open on gameplay footage of Alex, Kiryu, Beat, and Dr. Eggman fighting on Mt. Eternal. At the peak of the stage, Eggman uses his All-Star Move, with him and Metal Sonic blasting Kiryu away with great power. But as we transfer to the trailer cinematic, we see that the lasers go on for super far, combining into one extremely large laser.

Suddenly, we see footage of Knuckles The Echidna sitting atop the Master Emerald. He looks very proud currently, and as if nothing in the world could ruin his current occupation. The ground rumbles, and before Knuckles knows what's going on, the earth around him is crumbling. He picks up the Master Emerald just in time before Angel Island caves in its entirety, large chunks of land falling into the Mystic Ruins sea below. As he falls toward the ocean at high speeds, Knuckles looks distraught at first, then looks at the Master Emerald like he's talking to it, and asks "Now what?"

Suddenly, the environment around them humorously switches instantly to Green Hill. Now, Knuckles and the Master Emerald are sitting on a platform in Green Hill. The platform rises up and down, up and down, bringing them out of and back into view. He shakes his head in disapproval.
The environment changes again, this time to the top of Millennium Tower. He looks content for a minute, but then the tower rumbles and starts to explode, giving the echidna a disappointed expression. He, again, shakes his head in disapproval.
We're now on top of Satan's Tower. Knuckles apparently cannot stand the constant noise of Puyos falling and combining along with all of the characters' voice lines, holding his ears tightly. He shakes his head.
Now, Knuckles is sitting atop the Master Emerald in the OG Velvet Room. Igor inspects the Master Emerald with a greedy smile, and Knuckles just striaght-up punches the dude away like it's nothing. He shakes his head.
Knuckles thinks he's finally found a good spot on top of a Monkey Tower pyramid, but that's when Ai Ai flies straight into him, knocking the echidna and the emerald into the ocean below. We see an underwater shot of Knuckles holding tightly onto the Master Emerald with his breath held. He shakes his head.

He looks a bit anxious now, sitting on top of the Master Emerald sitting on top of a non-descript skyscraper, but after waiting for a few seconds, it seems like he's in the clear. Knuckles smiles, and starts to get some shut-eye (we can see some dark circles under his eyes).

That's when a Platinum Star jet flies right into the Master Emerald.

Knuckles is now hanging onto the jet for dear life, and desperately tries to grasp at the shards of the Master Emerald, to no avail, as they fly off out of view. He climbs onto the fighter jet, ready to beat up whoever caused it. He sees Sonic, and for a moment looks a bit relieved. The two wave and shout to each other. Suddenly, Sonic's hit straight in the face by Joker, who was fighting him atop this jet. Sonic falls off, hands and legs out like in his classic death pose, spinning into the city below. Knuckles is already ticked off that his friend is hurt and his Master Emerald is shattered once again, but the breaking point for him is seeing a greedy little cat holding tight onto a shard with glee.

Knuckles walks intimidatingly towards Joker and Morgana, stretching his arms a bit as he does so. He shouts at them for taking what's not theirs, before delivering an earth-crushing blow, which is what transitions us to gameplay. We see Knuckles and Joker having a 1v1 on Platinum Stars, where he shows off some normal attacks. Then, we see Sonic spindashing towards him on Green Hill, but Knuckles shields it like in the movie before using a forward smash. He performs a Volcanic Dunk on top of Millennium Tower to take out Kiryu, Ryo, and Axel. He locks Arle into his Bound Ring on Satan's Tower, then punches her upwards into Tails. A special spotlight is given to his Heavy Throw move while battling Beat in the Velvet Room or at Ai Ai on Monkey Target. On Mt. Eternal, Knuckles looks around as the Emerald Radar appears above his head, meanwhile Rouge sneakily swoops past his All-Star bar and takes some of it. We also see Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles all posing together on the Death Egg stage, before Eggman falls in with a devastating attack and laughs gleefully. Knuckles can then be seen gliding across Space Harrier with NiGHTS and Bayonetta.

Cut back to the cinematic, and Knuckles is searching for the Master Emerald shards in the Amusement Park stage, lifting up tiles on the ground to see if any are lying underneath. He gets a tingly sense and sees Alex Kidd picking it up and examining it. Alex actually looks like he wants to return it to the rightful owner, but Knuckles is currently blinded by rage, and runs over to a distressed Alex to deliver his All-Star Move, transitioning this shot to gameplay of the attack. In the cinematic again, Alex flies into the Ferris wheel in the background while Knuckles looks exhausted, and lies against the Emerald, feeling it is safe for now. Unbeknownst to him, a Streets of Rage enemy walks over to the Emerald from the other side and delivers a weak attack, causing the Emerald to shatter once again, and Knuckles to lose his balance and fall onto the floor, looking defeated.

End of trailer.
and yes I think it would be very funny if Alex and/or Sonic just keep on dying in AGES reveal trailers, similarly to Mario and/or Luigi in Smash's reveal trailers

Knuckles trailer
We open on a close up of AiAi's face looking nervous. Behind him is a beautiful blue sky. We do a dramatic pan out shot to reveal he is standing upon the ramp of Monkey Target. Cut back to a mid shot of AiAi concerned until he shakes his head and forcibly pumps himself up for the mini game.

Suddenly Sonic, Tails, Kiryu and Beat appear alongside him all in their own Monkey Balls (reference to Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania). Sonic gives a thumbs up to AiAi before throwing himself off the ramp, with Tails, Beat and Kiryu following shortly afterwards. AiAi surprised quickly throws himself onto the ramp to catch up to the others. We see a below shot of all five Monkey Balls zipping off of the ramp, a short pause and then a smaller red blur follows suit.

Cut to an aerial shot where the Sega crew all open their Monkey Balls, only for Beat to start sinking immediately, splashing down in the water. He shrugs and begins to dance inside the sinking Monkey Ball.
AiAi carries on attempting to catch up to Sonic who smiles confidentially as he is currently in the lead when he starts to drop. Mild panic begins to set in for Sonic as he slowly falls into the ocean below before he sinks, hand outstretched as he goes under, unable to swim. Tails abandons his Monkey Ball to save Sonic, grabbing him and yanking him from out the ocean.

AiAi now only has Kiryu as competition. AiAi looks on determined to catch up just as a red blur glides clean past him, causing him to be surprised and steer off course. Kiryu releases his Monkey Ball dropping towards the target's bullseye.
Just as he's about to land there though, that same red blur blasts into the targets bullseye, forcing Kiryu to dodge back to avoid being struck. He slowly walks across the target to see a crater in the middle.

Peering into the sudden hole, he is surprised at as a sudden uppercut knocks him into the air. Knuckles leaps out of the ground triumphantly with his fist raised high holding a shard of Master Emerald. He begins to walking away unaware of what just happened.
As Kiryu lands back on the target with a loud crash, Knuckles stops. Kiryu slowly stands up, absolutely covered in Heat as he makes his way to the Echidna. Knuckles punches his fists together, sensing the aggression from Kiryu.

We cut to gameplay of Knuckles facing off with Kiryu on Monkey Target, still with his Heat meter maxed. We see Kiryu perform his beast charge and witness Knuckles unique dodge animation, pushing Kiryu aside from him and following up with his powerful basic jab combo.

We see Sonic and Tails appear on stage and Knuckles showcases his unique Knuckles Chaotix Ring grab by throwing the ring to Tails, who is grabbed by it. Knuckles begins the wind up, knocking Tails into Sonic knocking him away (subtly referencing the trio's team attack from Sonic Heroes). We then see some of Knuckles other moves showcased:

  • Knuckles winds up a punch and is hit by a fireball from Arle, before returning the favour to the mage with the Volcanic Dunk, fireballs spewing from the ground as he does so.

  • We see gameplay of Knuckles performing Dig, tunneling into the ground and leaping out to perform a powerful uppercut, alongside Axel Stone who performs his Grand Upper back to back with him.

  • We see gameplay footage of Knuckles chasing Dr. Eggman down on Mt Eternal with Heavy, Eggman's old creation, throwing him at the evil scientist. It sends him flying. Close up of Heavy casually standing around on stage.

  • We then see gameplay footage of Alex Kidd also on Mt. Eternal. Knuckles throws a heavy chunk of rock at him, which Alex breaks with ease(his martial arts are designed for this of course) and matches blows with Knuckles briefly before Knuckles throws Heavy onto Alex, finishing him off in battle (a reference to Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle's Janken loss screens) and showcasing that defeats via stamina are possible(not sure if we've actually showcased this yet).

  • We see Knuckles gliding through the air alongside NiGHTS and Ulala who are performing their own glide moves respectively.
Knuckles showcases the training dummy, as the camera pans to reveal Akira Yuki, Ryo Hazuki, and Alex Kidd waiting impatiently behind him to use it.

Gameplay footage of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles all spindashing past the screen in Green Hill Zone before breaking out and performing their taunts; Knuckles boxing the air, Tails flying in a circle and Sonic performing the Super Peel out, referencing each of their special abilities and yet another Sonic Heroes reference.

Cut to CGI where we see Knuckles in the Casino of Envy looking at the shard of Emerald he obtained in the opening cutscene. Bayonetta appears. “So you're the guardian of this 'Angel Island' I've heard so much about...” she poses dramatically and swoops in to attack Knuckles who is mid 'emerald radar' taunt, cutting to gameplay with her All-Star meter flashing.

Suddenly, Rouge the Bat swoops past and steals some of Bayonetta's All-Star meter, preventing her from performing it, and handing it over to Knuckles, Knuckles in turn winds up a punch, throwing himself forward, and beating another piece of the emerald out of Bayonetta, and performing his All-Star move consisting of reassembling the Emerald and unleashing a barrage of furious punches on Bayonetta.

We end on Knuckles victory screen (slightly edited to remove score details) where he is attempting to guard the Master Emerald only for Rouge to steal it whilst he's not looking.
Cut to 'BATTLE OF AGES' title.
Knuckles yells at Rouge and demands she gets back here with the Master Emerald whilst she teases him.

The after credits stinger is back on Monkey Target at sunset. AiAi, who has been gliding this ENTIRE TIME touches down perfectly on the goal with a flourish.
Big the Cat is seen fishing on the side of the target, pulling a very waterlogged Beat out of the ocean, who proceeds to dance after a single beat whilst still dangling on Big's fishing line.

Total reveals:
  • Knuckles the Echidna (Fighter)
  • Monkey Target (Stage)
  • Training Dummy (Mode)
  • Rouge the Bat (Assist)
  • Big the Cat (Assist)
Also I agree with Janx's sentiments about letting both Sonic and Alex Kidd be the 'Mario' victims of these trailers, appropriately being his Sega equivalents at various points.

Honestly if I didn't want to focus on AiAi, have the whole Banana Mania gang there and felt Kiryu should be the last there due to AiAi and him having the same creator, Alex would have been the one getting uppercut by Knuckles. I needed for Sonic to fall in the water though.

Not that anyone in particular is safe from slapstick in my submissions...but...

This is it! Our final stage! We had many good stage ideas here, but in the end, one emerged victorious. And it is with great pleasure that I announce that our last base game stage will be the SEGA Tower!!!! What a perfect final stage, bringing a more meta perspective on the world of SEGA and quite literally coming from the sendoff to their time making consoles, as well as having a degree of authenticity to it as it is a game SEGA like referencing. Amazing way of sending off our stage lineup.

So I guess it's time for another discussioooooon--

I think now's an appropriate time to relax a bit and look back on how we fared with our stages. Also the past few days have been pretty tiring for my brain so I feel like I need to wind down a bit lmao

Pretty happy with the overall lineup for the base stages.

Overall I think we've got a pretty good mix. We have:
  • Simple minimal frills stages (Grand Imperial Theatre)
  • Walled stages (The Arena)
  • Travelling stages (Millenium Tower)
  • Scrolling stages (Fantasy Zone)
  • Stage Hazard stages (Death Egg)
  • Huge horizontal stages (Village of Lupia)
  • Huge vertical stages (Mt. Eternal)
  • Small simple stages (The Shrine)
  • Set Piece stages (City Escape)
Aesthetically we have fighting rings, space stages, casinos, arcades, snowy lakes, mountains, towers, dungeons, cities, villages, beaches, a hospital, battlefields, dreamscapes, creepy mansions, theatres, ruins, floating islands and a comic book.

Whilst we have fallen victim to 'final boss' levels a lot, I think overall we did a pretty good job on some unique locations, gimmicks and stage variety.

If I had to make any nitpicks it's that I'd have liked a few more stages on base that didn't neccesarily link to a fighter or a fighter's series.

Outrun, Space Harrier, Comix Zone, Two Point Hospital and Segagaga are all really fun stages and I'd have liked maybe two or three more Sega series stages that weren't tied to a fighter. That said, I do think it's important for every fighter to get a stage of their own so it's a delicate balancing act.

Vectorman (Vectorman) (1995)

Who is Vectorman?
Vectorman is main titular protagonist of self-titled game series "Vectorman" developed by Bluesky Software and published by SEGA on Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in 1995. He is an Green Orbot that cleans up the whole dystopian futuristic Earth from toxic waste after people left it before the games' events.
One day, Raster was watching the whole Earth by PlanetCom cameras (The ccamers that allow to see whole Earth from Space station) and then, a lesser attached a Warhead to his head by accident and he became evil. His plan was executing all humans who dare to return on Earth after spending time in Space.
However, when Vectorman heard about the news where Warhead Raster tries to destroy the World, he went for adventure through Futuristic Earth to save the world from Raster's evil plans.

After he defeated Raster, he saved the world and later after the events of the game, he went for adventure again just to defeat the Evil Widow queen and deadly Spiders in Vectorman 2.

Vectorman is one of obscure SEGA characters who was made by American defunct studio Bluesky Software. He would be 2nd Party Assist character in Battle of AGES.

How he could work?
When summoned via Assist Timer, he could run and jump around the stage like Sukapon AT and he could shoot the Plasma balls at opponents that deal normal damage. He could also hover I air, which he could make an air dash to attack the fighter in mid-air.
When you defeat him, he would explode into balls that ricochet off the stages' edges (Which he leaves on stage when KOed).

Why Vectorman as Assist character?
You know why? Remember Speed saying about character like him being in the Roster and being treated as super important addition? Well, he actually isn't (despite he was an answer for Nintendo's DKC series) and he is one of most obscure SEGA character that exist.
Also I pick him as assist because his series are not big enough to be a fighter and he would make more sense as NPC character.
Also he would be like Sukapon of Battle of AGES.

(The secret reason why I chose Vectorman as Assist to not overlap with other SEGA Smash rosters that are found on internet)


Tembo (Tembo the Badass Elephant)

Who is that Badass Elephant?

Tembo is the Main protagonist of the game of same name. Tembo is a Rambo-looking Elephant, who saves the city from PHANTOM forces, who are trying to steal the artifact that resembles their logo and they try to destroy Shell City.
Tembo also has a Bird friend named Picolo, who assists him sometimes and he really likes the Peanut Butter.

What's his Assist Role?
When summoned via Assist Timer, he would run and charge at opponents with his brute force. He occasionally jumps to also KO opponents in air.
His charge deals huge damage and decent knockback, so better watch out or he would ram at you with high speed.
While he jumps, he also makes the stage Shake, which it makes the Fight more intense while Tembo is around.
You can use Tembo as platform like Gogoat?

Why Tembo as Assist?
I nominate him, because he is one of Misc. SEGA character that debuted in "Third Party era" of History of SEGA. Also his function would be cool, since we could see him charging across the stage.
His series aren't big to be a fighter, but he would be a fun and useful Assist to use in Battles.

Job #206a: Billy Bishop & Sheila Crawford (Spy Fiction)

"Spy Fiction is a game released for the PS2 in 2004 by Sammy Studios and Access Games, published by Sammy in North America and by Sega Europe in PAL regions. It is notable (for me, at least) for being written and directed by Hidetaka Suehiro, also known as SWERY or SWERY65, an extremely eccentric game creator who has made such works as Deadly Premonition 1 & 2, The Missing, and The Good Life, all of which are absolutely fantastic experiences if you're on his same off-beat wavelength and lucky for all of you, I am.

The gimmick of this game, other than the absolutely insane plot and setpieces, is that Billy and Sheila (you can pick either to play as) have a special camera that can copy someone's look, allowing them to camouflage themselves as them and use it to sneak into places they shouldn't. Billy can only copy male forms, but Sheila can copy anyone. The assist idea therefore is that when summoned, you will get either Billy or Sheila who take a picture of the opponent and then fight as the opponent's clone on your side, a bit like Ditto in Smash or a member of the Fighting Polygon Team.

We don't have any Sammy representation yet, and honestly I didn't even know that Sammy and Sega had a hand in this game until I bought a copy for myself in my quest to play every major written-and-directed-by-SWERY game, but I've been sitting on this for too long so dammit I'm making it happen."

Job #206b: Columns (Columns)

Columns is an arcade game turned series of three titles on the Sega Genesis. It's a fun little jewel-falling puzzler, and it consists of matching up gem types to create explosions - y'know, usual puzzle game stuff. Columns is notable in that it consistently gets references and gets included in compilations and such, including the Sega Ages remake line on the PS2 (which, while rough as a line overall, did include a cute Puyo Puyo-style story involving an adventurer named Culet and I had fun with it).

When this assist is activated, Columns fall from the sky quickly in various formations. Perhaps they'll create a barrier in front of or behind you. Maybe a staircase. Maybe they'll trap your opponent and cause damage by landing on them. Maybe they'll create a big combo and shatter, causing area and splash damage. Either way, it'll cycle through a few effect types that you can use strategically to your advantage.

Plus, when the attack is activated, one of Columns's characters such as Culet, the enchantress, or even, yes, The Columns 3 guy, will appear briefly to cheer you on!

“Orpheus, who is this handsome fellow?,” you might be asking yourself. Well, his name is Woody. WIIIIIILD WOODY! And he’s the titular protagonist of the 1995 Sega CD classic of the same name. He’s a rambunctious, hyper-energetic pencil brought to life for the purpose of saving the world from destruction. He has the ability to make anything he draws come to life and erase anything with his... er, unfortunately placed eraser bottom.

As I’m sure fellow die-hard Wild Woody fan Speed Weed can attest to, Wild Woody is a… fascinating piece of Sega’s history. It was developed by Sega of America as a “swan song” for the Sega CD, and boy what a note to end that add-on with. It’s not a very good game at all, but everything surrounding it is so bat** insane that you can’t help but fixate on it. If you’ve never experienced this modern marvel for yourself, here’s a quick rundown of just about every bat** insane aspect of Wild Woody’s existence:
  1. Pre-rendered cutscenes with animation that looks straight out of one of those bowling alley strike animations (you know the ones)
  2. An absolutely unhinged storyline involving a stolen cursed artifact causing the end of the world thanks to a series of incredibly specific conditions
  3. Woody himself being an amalgamation of every EXTREEEEEEEME 90’s mascot with attitude
  4. The brief 5 seconds they try to set up a serious plot point involving Woody forgetting his identity only to never bring it up again
  5. The main villain being implied to have been involved in the fall of Atlantis and the sinking of the Titanic
  6. The mermaid easter egg. I’m not gonna go into more detail because Smashboards is for good children of all ages, but just… the ****ing mermaid easter egg
  7. The soundtrack being composed by Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, who would later go on to become one of the lead guitarists for Guns n’ Roses. Which means that Guns n’ Roses has a closer connection to Wild Woody than any other game on our roster. Said soundtrack also goes hard for no reason.
So yeah, Wild Woody is one of the most chaotic things Sega has ever put out and I urge everyone here to experience it for themselves. Not necessarily by playing the game, but at least watch the cutscenes on YouTube. It is something I can only liken to a religious experience. And honestly, the main reason why I’m submitting Wild Woody isn’t because he’s secretly some important character to Sega’s legacy or because his game is a hidden gem. I just think it’d be funny if he made it in. And besides, while it’s nice to talk about the more fondly remembered stuff, sometimes it’s just fun to throw in some weird obscure **** for the lols.

While I dare not suggest that William D. Woodrow is anything short of a Sega All-Star that deserves to be playable, I do think his specific set of talents would be best served in an assist role. When summoned, Woody will appear and scream his iconic line, “TIME TO START SKETCHIN’!!!!” He’ll then draw a kangaroo, jump in its pouch, and proceed to throw sticks of dynamite as the kangaroo hops around the stage. If one of Woody’s victims is within KO range (say, 10 stamina left), he’ll finish by running up and erasing them with his… uhhhh… eraser ass. Probably one of the more morbid assist functions, but honestly I can’t think of anything more fitting for Woody.

Job #206a: Teddy Boy

The titular hero of Teddy Boy Blues, this pint sized marksman is armed with a gun and he's not afraid to use it.

Summoning Teddy Boy will have him appear before the player and take aim at the opponent.
However, unlike most guns, Teddy Boy's bullets do not do damage, but rather shrink the opponents and give them a rubber ball property meaning they'll bounce like super balls off of walled surfaces!

The positives of the Teddy Boy assist include:
  • Autolocks on to nearest opponent
  • Reduces opponents attack range, making it especially effective on close range fighters.
  • Reduces jump distance, making Teddy Boy good for edgeguarding.
  • When shot, opponents will take on a rubber ball property making them bounce harder and faster off of objects.
  • Reduces opponents weight making them easier to launch!
  • Bouncing an opponent off a surface will do a little damage to them!
The downsides of the Teddy Boy assist include:
  • Bullets do not travel through stage meaning opponents can use stage's design to escape his attack.
    • Although they do travel through certain platforms...if the player can jump through it, so can Teddy Boy's bullets.
  • Does not reduce opponents attack power meaning you can still get badly hurt if you rush in carelessly! Know your spacing! Know your fighter!
  • Teddy Boy himself deals no damage meaning you'll have to get your hands dirty to finish the job.
Teddy Boy isn't the most famous retro Sega character, but I've always had a fondness for the idea behind his unique weapon.

Bonanza Bros
They'll sneak around the stage, stealing items from the stage before escaping in a blimp. They'll shoot players who get in their. However they may trip an arlam and chase guards to chase them, who'll attack unfortunate fighters.

Crazy TAXI
A path will appear and a taxi will drive through it, hitting any fighter who gets in the way before drooping their passenger off. Money will then fly out that a lucky fighter can pick up. The driver has a random chance of being one of the orignal four.

Assist nomination 1: Ristar (Ristar)

The main character of a Genesis game by Sonic Team, Ristar stretches out his extendable limbs in a straight line. If he grabs the opponent, he pulls himself towards them and rams them, sending the grabbed opponent bouncing around like a pinball.




Assist nomination 2: Epsilon-Eagle (Alien Soldier)

The main character of Alien Soldier, a game by Treasure. (who are also known for Gunstar Heroes and Sin & Punishment) He has access to six different weapons, but if Contra has taught us anything, it's that you should always go for the spread shot. Using the Laser Force weapon, Epsilon will fire four energy projectiles diagonally in a pattern similar to Contra's spread shot, shooting several volleys before disappearing.

Upon being summoned, Pengo will push an ice block across the floor.

This ice block has two functions:
  1. It does damage to anyone(other than Pengo's summoner) that it hits, even freezing opponents.
  2. The floor the ice block slides across becomes slippy, reducing traction. Again, Pengo's summoner is not affected by the slippery floor. This lasts for upto 15 seconds afterwards before it thaws out.

Resubmitting Samurai and Casey

Samurai (7th Dragon)



7th Dragon is an obscure JRPG owned by SEGA, The Samurai is the most consistent class throughout the franchise.

As an assist they would go around the stage and use many sword slices utilizing all 4 of their fighting styles and they even have a counter. If you are unlucky enough to get combo'd by Samurai you will take incredible damage.
Casey (Kid Chameleon)



Once Summoned Casey will skateboard onto the stage and take out a mask and put it on and use the attack. after attacking with the first mask he will use 2 more masks and then leave

These are the masks and abilities Casey can use:
Berserker: Casey uses the horns on the mask to ram into opponents
Cyclone: Casey will do a powerful Spinning Lariat
EyeClops: Casey will shoot a powerful laser
Maniaxe: Casey will throw a powerful axe in an arc
Red Stealth: Caset will slash an opponent with a Katana

I nominate this guy because just look at him, and also I feel like this is a fun idea for an assist.

Okay so this one isn't really a character or anything, but hear me out. I'm sure I don't need to explain what Pinball is. We've all played it and we've all seen pinball machines at arcades and whatnot. What you're probably wondering is what any of this has to do with Sega. Quite a lot, actually! Prior to breaking out into the video game market, Sega started producing a **** ton of pinball machines in the 70s. Although they abandoned pinball production once video gaming became a more profitable endeavor, they returned to the pinball scene in 1994 after purchasing Data East's pinball division and rebranding it as Sega Pinball Inc. Under this banner, they would release various pinball machines themed around current film releases and popular western franchises. Space Jam, Batman, Godzilla, X-Files, if it was a popular mid-late 90s release, there's a chance it had a Sega Pinball cabinet based on it. This lasted until 1999 when Sega sold of their pinball division to Stern. Fly also touched upon this in her Fantastic Pinball stage write-up, but Sega's ties to pinball extends to the world of video games as well, if Sonic Spinball and the various pinball-themed stages in Sonic games are anything to go by. While this might not be a reference to any specific game, I think a pinball assist would be a very fun way to represent Sega's turbulent history with this arcade staple. And this just feels like the perfect time to submit something off the wall like this.

When summoned, two flippers and a set of bumpers appear in front of the screen, functionally turning the stage into a pinball machine. A ball will roll onto the screen and then be propelled by the flippers, careening into the bumpers and damaging any opponents it comes into contact with. And just like regular pinball, the asisst ends when the ball falls off the screen.

Job #34: Arcade Assist (Mary - Quartet)

Quartet is a 1986 4-player run n' gun/shoot 'em up arcade classic, which involves a titular warrior team (Lee, Joe, Mary and Edgar) being sent to clear out space colony Zero-6 which has been overtaken by Space Pirates and retrieve the late Princess Cynthia's casket. In the Master System version, Mary is the first player character alongside Edgar, so I chose her to represent a game. It's music is also used in 1991's Spider-Man, maimai, Groove Coaster Zero and Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Future Tone.

Mary flies around in the air by using a jet-pack on her back, while using her laser bazooka to shoot opponents. Sometimes, she will change up weapons and shoot additional projectiles such as Lee's wide beams, Joe's speed gun and Edgar's slight-arching miracle gun. She basically functions similar to Ray Mk III as it works as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Sir Tongara de Pepperouchau III from Clockwork Knight

Sir Pepper is the protagonist of the Clockwork Knight series, a duology of 2D platformers for the Saturn. Pepper is a toy knight who lives among many other living toys in the room of a girl called Betsy. Each night, these toys come to life through the singing of the princess Chelsea, a doll who lives inside the room's clock. Pepper is after Chelsea's heart, but unfortunately, he's somewhat clumsy and a bit of a laughing stock. One day, a mysterious force kidnaps Chelsea, which ****s things up because if she ain't there to sing, those toys ain't waking up. To make matters worse, a spell has been placed on many of the toys that turns them evil. And so, Pepper must journey forth, fighting off the forces of evil to save Chelsea.

So Clockwork Knight was a pretty notable game for the console, but after the Saturn, the series just kinda.........disappeared. It died with the Saturn really. So of course, the logical thing to assume would be that this is just one of many random scrimblo franchises that are propped up by fans but completely ignored by SEGA, right? Surely this sounds like the kind of game that would be shunted off to the vaults and never given any mention again, right?

Right?

Wrong.

So I've been a SEGA fan for a while, but around maybe 2 years ago, I started to gain a greater fascination with their history and dug way deeper than I ever had before. One of the most fascinating little running themes I've seen in my more recent journeys as a SEGA fan is the realization that SEGA actually ****ing love to reference this game. For one, Pepper makes a cameo in Segagaga. The series has a significant presence in the SEGA Freaks collection of trading cards from the Saturn era. The series has made several appearances in SEGA albums, often through the ending theme, "A Lullaby", which has shown up in, among other albums, Segacon, a massive collection of tracks from across SEGA's history up to the end of their console-making days (said tracks were based on a fan vote btw!); Radio DC, a very off-beat collection of remixes that are framed as if you're listening to a radio station; and SEGAROCK, an album consisting simply of rockin' remixes of various SEGA tunes. These are all up on YouTube btw, I'd recommend you check them out. Said song has also made an appearance in, of all things, the Yakuza series, as one of the various SEGA tracks that can play in certain places. Pepper also made a cameo in the ****ing PSO2 anime of all things. And lastly, he also showed up a lot when SEGA were celebrating their 60th anniversary, getting both his own lil pfp when they did those and also a spot in that big banner they did. So that's quite a resume! And this is all crazy to me cause this series is like, the last thing I'd expect them to reference this often. But it's the world we live in, and so I think it's reasonable to give it a shoutout. I don't really think he has to be playable, but just a lil something would be nice. I think he fits right in as an assist.

When summoned, Pepper would start running around, smacking people with his keyblade. He'll also sometimes pick up and throw opponents.
