You're safe for now.
Anyways, before people seriously considered Reimu, she was a meme on /v/. Literally one guy was touting her out and about in every thread. It was some real devotion for sure. Some people still see her as nothing more than a meme despite the serious reputation that the series has going for it.
Hey, that guy has some taste, you have to admit lmao
even though I'd rather prefer someone other than Reimu
Either way, I think I can see how it's a bit of a meme, but I don't think just straight up disregarding Touhou content should be a thing to do when we previously thought franchises like Street Fighter and Final Fantasy were never gonna happen. In the grand scheme of things, Touhou Project is practically the 2nd biggest indie franchise of all time before Minecraft. I WOULD put Undertale in that slot, but one of the biggest attributes of the game and some music were practically inspired by Touhou in the first place. I would see Touhou and Undertale sharing the second slot, to be respectful.
The annual Reitaisai, fanmade animes, the fact that so many internet collaborations still continue to use Touhou songs as reference to remix - for a franchise that's been going on this big for so long, I'd say it has a sure fire chance. The clout ZUN has gotten with this franchise is mind-blowing, even more so when he's the only person still making the series after 21 years. It would make a little bit of a splash here in the Americas, because people DO know the franchise by either osmosis or the internet, but my god - Japan? It'd be beyond astronomical, Bowsette-levels, even.
People
do know how much of a rep Touhou has, so it leaves me at awe as to why people will still completely disregard it, being a meme or not. I mean, we have Steve from Minecraft now in serious contenting talk, and practically everyone considered him a meme. I believe that as long as the franchise got the clout, they should be accounted for good talk. I dunno, might be the 12AM mind speaking for me and I'm just rambling lmao
