Pro Smash 4 player. Got into a twitter keyboard warrior fight with Leffen.

Now everyone is mad at each other again and it's glorious.

Competitive Smash is always hilarious to me.

tbh he's not entirely wrong as there's a huge problem with the Melee community and no other FGC community is as entitled. Unless you can get me a community that has acted similar, Melee DID have the whole Apex thing where they chanted "Melee! Melee!" IMMEDIATELY when Zero won Smash 4 finals and at another tournament they threw a fit with Guilty Gear Xrd players because Xrd may have cut in to Melee time and they refused to act mature about it.


TLDR: Salem's kinda right but it took a while for him to get his thoughts out there rationally to make them actual points

I agree with some of the Melee community tending to act entitled sometimes. However, the problem is Salem’s arguments were faulty to say the least. As sky said, the Melee community was fairly justified in not looking brawl, as it was just an inherently anti-competitive game. While it’s true that the Melee chant was a thing, it was a thing years ago. There is no reason to bring the drama back around now. He’s generalising the entire community based on what is ultimately not a large amount of evidence from years ago done by a handful people.
He also cited the twitch chat as a source, which is a very interesting tactic considering the twitch chat only exists to troll. Very interesting.

You're definitely right, but the fact that he told the players that they weren't a part of the smash community is a little disrespectful. Armada, Leffen, Mang0, etc have all tried out the different games in the series and decided that they didn't like them, which is totally fair. Hell, Leffen even played competitive Brawl.

To tell them that they aren't a part of the Smash community is a little obscene. The audience and spectators are one thing, I can vouch for how many Melee purists there are, but the players shouldn't be told that they aren't a part of the community they've contributed to. There would be no Smash 4 or Brawl tournaments if it wasn't for Melee.

With that said, I don't think he should bark at people that actually wants the game to thrive. Either Salem is secretly trying to keep the Smash community more whole or is being one huge tantrum.

The Melee community are mostly all finding ways to enjoy this game. Abusing them for not being part of the smash community is bizarre. They are playing Ultimate and streaming it on a daily basis.

Obviously there's a few rotten eggs, but Salem is proving himself that there's anti-Melee feelings in the Smash community. That's equally as toxic and not a good for the overall experience at tournaments. It is hypocritical and does nothing to improve relations.

Another thing is that he is being a bit hypocritical talking about how Melee players have divided the smash community and cause an us vs them mentality, when he himself is splitting the community by attacking top players. Mango was actively trying to avoid drama and was known for being chill, and Armada and Axe are some of the nicest players, yet Salem still argued and got angry with them. He literally attached mango with no outside pressure when mango wasn’t even involved. THAT’S how you split a community. Luckily people seem to be uniting and not dividing due to Salem. Unless this was an elaborate plan all along to unite the smash community, in which case props.

We might get one curveball but that's about it.

If we love the game, even for different reasons, we are all able to join them if we wish to.

For example: there can be people who got introduced to Spyro because of Skylanders, and people can accept to dislike those games. However, if that person wishes to become a Spyro fan, and wants to get into the franchise with the help of the fans and by buying the past or new games, we don’t have the power or control to try to take the person out or bash it for starting with Skylanders and knowing the most about that series. If it wants to be a Spyro fan, we should support the decission.

Tbh, nothing would make me happier than the Melee competitive community just simply dying. Its continued existence is just proof of how the Smash fanbase refuses to accept any sort of change while literally every other competitive community moves on to the most recent titles.

If we love the game, even for different reason, we are all able to join them if we wish to.

For example: there can be people who got introduced to Spyro because of Skylanders, and people can accept to dislike those games. However, if that person wishes to become a Spyro fan, and wants to get into the franchise with the help of the fans and by buying the past or new games, we don’t have the power or control to try to take the person out or bash it for starting with Skylanders and knowing the most about that series. If it wants to be a Spyro fan, we should support the decission.

The divide is due to the differences in competitiveness. Melee's more technical and movement based, whilst Ultimate is bait and punish. There will never be another game like Melee, thus it will always remain until GCN/Wii/CRT die out.

I love those character picks too, although i wish that the pass featured six fighters so i could include Crash to the mix.

That's what I think, too, but then again, all of these options are predictable outcomes. I'd say Porky with a Mother 3 localization announcement would be pretty hype, but it's hard to keep the same level of hype throughout the entire DLC roster since Joker being unpredictable suddenly rendered almost every character predictable.

Let people enjoy a game that they enjoy. Melee’s community has lasted for so long is because as others have said, it’s a fast-paced game with a ton of technical movement, while the direct sequel in brawl was noticeably slower with inherently anti-competitive mechanics chucked in. Thus, Melee’s scene lasts whole brawl’s dies. And it’s not like Melee players haven’t tried other games, people like Leffen and M2K played them competitively. But can you blame them if they don’t enjoy it, and go back to Melee, a game they do enjoy?
There’s a reason Third-Strike tournaments still exist. When you invest so much time into a game and the sequels you find lacking, what are you gonna do?

I find the 6th empty spot on the stage select screen to be kind of suspicious especially being Piranha Plant isn't getting a stage. I think Sakurai is going to give us a surprise.

I remember being really against DQ in Smash but now I've warmed up to Erdrick and think he'll bring cool stuff.

I liked the Dragon Quest games that i have played, so a rep in Smash would be dope for me.
