Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Also I dunno if anyone else has talked about it, but if anything aside from that Joker reveal, I think we finally have clear-cut confirmation Reggie knows about the demand for Persona 5 on Switch. He has to at least know about it from that one video Nintendo of America put up one way or another, so hopefully some stuff comes out about it soon and this doesn't become a "Reggie Mother 3" situation.

C'mon. Just do it. Please. I know it has to be in the works and there's some backdoor contract deal Atlus struck.
There has been rumors of a Persona 5 Complete Edition, similar to Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Fes.

But that may be a PS4 exclusive IIRC.

Isn't it an exclusive though?
At this point, it's either if the deal with Sony and Atlus with having the mainline Persona games only on their platform are now void or there's a new deal of some sort. I mean, we've seen it with Final Fantasy VII and other titles that've been known to be "Sony Exclusive". If we weren't in a post-Joker reveal world, all these Persona 5 Switch rumors would be on a lot more people's radars, if you ask me.

Of course, it's always possible there are work-around back-end deals to try and get that on the Switch. Besides, past mainline Persona games on handhelds have done incredibly well. With the Switch also being a handheld, Persona 5 would bring in some serious traction to add onto those 2.5-3 million copies. We aren't getting another Persona in like another 5 or more years, so you might as well plop that on the Switch to sell more copies.

I just had a realization.

:ultridley::ultkrool::ultincineroar: are not only heavyweights, but they also share the same goddamn down smash

Is that considered lazy?

Wait, does Ridley has the same down smash with those two? I thought it was more like Charizard's.

Tbh, I'm more surprised :ultbowser::ultkrool::ultincineroar: all have dropkicks.

Persona 5 coming to the Switch is very plausible and makes a lot of sense given Atlus' past actions. Time will tell if it ever comes to fruition, but I have a pretty good feeling about it.

The biggest question is if the Switch can run it. I personally believe it can, but then again I'm not a dev so who knows. :p

Probably gonna be some Xenoblade 3D type of exclusive **** for the new Switch model if it doesn't run on vanilla well.

Why wouldn't it run a game that was on the PS3?

Ehhh, maybe? I don't think it'd be that extreme. Doom, Skyrim, and Crash were optimized pretty well on the Switch, so I imagine Persona 5 (which at its core is a PS3 game) could theoretically run fine. The biggest thing that would be affected most likely would be load times, but other than that visuals would probably go unchanged.

EDIT: Again, not a dev so I can't say any of this for certain, but IMO I think it could be done.

Pretty sure if the Switch can run Mortal Kombat 11 and Doom Eternal it can run Persona 5. I mean the PS3 could.

It's a PS3 game. It will run, probably at 1080p in docked.

I can't believe I forgot to mention this, but really the only exception of a mainline Persona game on a different platform was Revelations: Persona on the PC.

This was probably during the infancy of the deal between Sony and Atlus, but mainline Persona on a different platform has happened ONCE. Just on PC.

So far this seems to be the rumored list.

Joker
Erdrick(or another SE character possibly)
Lloyd/Yuri
Steve(maybe Banjo)
?????

So what's everyone satisfaction with the DLC if this rumored list is true?
I'm already incredibly happy with Joker, so the rest of the DLC characters could be absolute disappointments and I'd be relatively fine.

But this? This is amazing. You've got the Top 4 JRPG series all in Smash and either the mascot of the second best selling video game of all time and a cultural phenomenon or a hallmark of the classic Nintendo 3D era. I would be extremely happy.
So I wasn’t sure if this deserved a new topic or not, and heck it’s probably even been brought up before already, but... I’ve been thinking...

Was ultimate potentially rushed for release? Lately Nintendo has been very “good” about having games they’ve announced to be released by a certain day, month, and/or year, sticking to that schedule, which is something they used to not have a good track record on.

The reason i ask this, is while ultimate still feels very polished in multiplayer, it also feels a bit light in areas...namely single player content, echo fighter differences, etc, that normally smash games have been decent about fleshing out, usually causing delays, but still. I mean, we all know smash is at its core, all about multiplayer, but they’ve usually never been this barebones in the single player category.

It feels like ultimate pushed focus completely on multiplayer and ensuring that “everyone is here” and we know that some characters were harder to negotiate for reappearing than others. So what if those negotiations took the bulk of time, followed by movesets, balance, stability, etc, and pressed for time, sakurai and his team had to prioritize all that and come up with something light for single player? hence no stadium modes anymore, WOL being fairly lackluster, and echoes (aside from a few) being more or less copy/pasted from the original with at best some new taunts, rolls etc.

And now that brings me to my next question...could this mean all the stuff they couldn’t get by the deadline be free dlc? Like break the targets or home run contest? Or could echoes be fleshed out a bit more down the line?

We know new stuff like original dlc characters are gonna have to be paid for, but what if old single player content is released free? This would also help extend the life of the game a bit as well as keeping folks coming back during the wait for the next dlc character.
I would say that this is likely. Smash for Wii U released too late in the Wii U's lifespan and failed to save it. Nintendo needed strong first party titles out of the gate, and Smash Bros. is one of their best, so it's only natural that they'd have it close to the beginning of the Switch's lifespan, even if it means rushing it just a bit.

Atlus, similar to the Tales of team, goes wherever the install base is.

And guess where it is this time? The Nintendo Switch. Porting one of the best JRPGs of all time to the rising star console worldwide is a smart business decision.

I don't think we're talking about a whole Street Fighter V esque deal going on here though. I'm pretty sure Persona releasing only on Playstation has just been a preferential choice on the development team up to now. The Playstation consoles have been the go to development build for Japanese developers since it took over the N64 during the Playstation days. It's just how it is. Persona isn't a HUUUUGE franchise overseas so labeling it away from Xbox isn't that big of a surprise. No need to optimize for 2 consoles when you can for 1 and it sell just as well. No need to optimize for 4 consoles when you can just do 2 that have, relatively, the same base architecture.

I dont think there's any sort of exclusivity deal going on with the Persona games. I think it's just how things work out in the long run.

Adding on to this, P5 in it's earliest form, was targetting the 360 in addition to the PS3. Catherine and Persona 4 Arena doing poorly on the 360 put the kabash on that.

I was gonna say something silly like "we all know the daemon x machina protagonist is the actual surprise character" but the more I look up Marvelous! as a company the more I realize they made (and are making) so many games I know so well solely from the fact that they combined with a bunch of companies and outlived all of the other divisons.

They have a bunch of Fate games, Rune Factory, Fortune Street, and the new No More Heroes under their belt.

Also speaking of, the Daemon X Machina guy is just a bootleg Guts down to the face.

Already makes him top 5 on the list, tbh.

I met this girl who was super into it and I played it for few months. when we stopped going to classes together I stopped playing.
Literally me with a girl and Pocket Camp. Then she moved back to Spain and now I really got no incentive.

Good. You'll save yourself some money.
Why did you buy from gacha of all things? It's basically just a casino on your phone.

1.) There are already a considerable amount of people outside of this site who want Banjo. Unless all of the fan polls from ages ago are just us, I suppose.
2.) That's with literally every character though???
want

You said it right there. People want Banjo. That doesn't men people expect Banjo. These are massively different things.

Well, he's clearly an avatar lol. That might not even be the "base" design (but likely is). And there's probably a sex option as well.
