Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

You must be ****ing kidding right?
Wait, these are added files. There may have been changes to files with the same name previously. Stuff like Cloud's Fighter spirit, in-game labelling of certain spirits, change in mp3 files.

May we have a moment of silence.
Where did you get this? Is this real?

welp, rip home stadium and break the target, they were made as fake leak.
Alright, one more thing before I leave again.

You guys heard about the square rep stuff, right?

If Sora and Geno are 99% out (which sucks because they're the best options here) my choices would be Sephiroth, Crono, or Slime.

Sephiroth or Crono because they'd be really cool, Slime because I want to see the world burn.
We think that it was DQ character but we can't be sure.

Is it really true that School is in general a waste of time? I mean I know it's kind of know here in America to not be soo great compared to other, but ones like in Urban Dictionary (Yes, I know it's usually filled with a lot of bias in that site, but it's bias is getting calmed down recently) seem to universally hate it.
Can't really say for America, but here in Australia school is a means to an end. You can do well in school and use that to get places, or you can drop out of school and take a different path and still do well. Given enough work, you can even end up in the same places as those who did well in school. Things will really just depend on what choices you make after school and what profession you take up/seek.

That said, it's still seen as favourable to complete school. Especially if you can do well because it should reflect positive character attributes. Recently a lot more employers have begun wanting at least a high school certificate, which has led to a lot more trade schools and enrollment in them, rather than leaving school to pick up a trade.

I'm sure we'll get an actual Day 1 Patch with the gamemodes like promised.

Right?

No. School is not a waste of time. Also, Urban Dictionary is not a credible source in any way, and shouldn't be listened to over the multitude of other sources that'll tell you school is important.

THAT SAID, going to college isn't as necessary as people will tell you. If you're interested in a vocation like mechanics or carpentry or construction (actual construction, not planning), then college might not be for you. There are other specialty programs that would suit you better at that point. While I'm in college, a friend of mine's working as a mechanic and he's perfectly happy, and I have another friend in the Navy learning how to be a Nuclear Engineer, so there are different options depending on what you want to do.

However, if you're looking to get any sort of higher job (engineer, software developer, business, psychology, law, medicine/healthcare, biotechnology, writing/journalism, etc.), you practically require higher education. At least an undergraduate degree, if not a master's degree or even a Ph.D or equivalent like Psy.D, J.D., or M.D..

With special guest appearance from my real-life best friend and DK fan, The Rage King!
(Obviously not his real name. We came up with the title as kids and it stuck.)

He plays Donkey Kong a lot, and i'm gonna play King K Rool a lot, so it kinda fits with our friendly rivalry.

The irony of the fact that he, the angry king, plays the stupid Ape. And I, the stupid ape, will play the angry king is not lost on me.

As for the location of the real Donkey Kong and K Rool, they're off getting ready for Smash.
They left us in charge of the Kremling Krew and Kongo Jungle (especially the banana horde). We're taking our jobs very seriously!
With the subject of DK brough up, I Will give a small tidbit about myself related to the big ape. Mario Party games are the only type of game I play mostly Donkey Kong. The main reason is that Yoshi was always taken by other players and I have never been the biggest fan of human characters for the most part.

Well, the game modes weren't promised. A leaker mentioned them.

That said, if Rex's Mii costume isn't in here, then there's going to be an actual Day 1 Patch.

Hahaha I never have that problem with picking Yoshi, because everyone knows I have a knife ready in hand for if they dare to pick my boi while I'm around :yoshi:

It was a joke.

We're likely not getting the gamemodes. At least not in this update.

I think this is the least likely thing preventing a DQ rep actually. If SQ want to push DQ they will.
It's literally the only thing going against a DQ character getting in. The license holders saying no.

It's just business to get a worldwide popular set of content in. Either they charge too much, say no, or charge a fair amount. You're way overestimating how much the Composer's personal opinions will affect this. That's not what Nintendo is looking for. They already know he's making music for games already on Nintendo as is. The issue just plain doesn't exist for them. It never was one. The guy sucks, but that won't stop him from being paid to get DQ content in Smash. Now if Nintendo had no interest in DQ content or SE doesn't want to license it? Then yeah, it won't happen. But you're looking for something that has pretty much no real bearing on the actual business going on.

I just realized we're like a day away from the game's release and we haven't hit over 9000 pages like I thought we would.
View attachment 181534
We still have 48 hours. We still can make it in time.

We had 9 months of speculation. We need to finish this speculation cycle before the game releases with a thousand pages per month. As smashboards, we must not fail.

Implying that DQXI will be withheld game awards solely because of Koichi Sugiyama (the DQ composer) is a strange position to take. Is there any precedent for something like this happening? I know labels and branding people are big these days, but I also think it's unrealistic to expect an 87-year-old Japanese man to adhere to the same social beliefs of a 20-year-old American. There're completely different upbringings, cultures, and worldviews involved.
Welcome to 2018 where none of that matters.

Also you're never too old to learn or change. That's generally the philosophy behind these types of decisions and while I'm not 100 percent behind the oversensitive kick people are on? I do agree with that.

Surely there are plenty good games worthy of being in Smash that don't have notorious war crime deniers in prominent positions? Ones popular world wide... that aren't owned by Square "two spirits two songs no English VA" Enix?
Sometimes you just have to seperate the work from the one responsible for it. I mean, Lovecraft was a horrible racist and his stuff is still unique and worth keeping around.
Yes, the Nationalist and War Crime Denying absolutely sucks (to put it extremely lightly), but it has little to do with the Dragon Quest series itself and not wanting content from it appearing in a game simply due to a single person being an a-hole is sort of belittling the many, many others that have contributed to the series, such as Akira Toriyama, for instance, and the many who aren't big names that work on the various games.
Dragon Quest is certainly deserving on its own merit to appear in Super Smash Bros regardless of one of the big names behind it being a crappy person outside of his musical works.
I've heard the man is actually very friendly and kind, but he does have extremely disagreeable opinions..but that is all they are, opinions, and they won't actual impact anyone's lives other then being negative aspects from the creator of something they may love or loved since I doubt he'll be getting too many to agree with him in this day and age.

Turned out it's real, leaker that leaked that image was user who made the tweet that Nekoo Nekoo posted.
I have his Twitter open and he didn't say anything on the matter. The Porky spirit wasn't there before and he said only 5 spirits got in.
There's something wrong here.

I never see anybody bring up the fact that Dragon Quest XI had a Midi soundtrack even in Japan, specifically to keep it the same as the international version. Square's already dealing with that composer. So we'll only get midi DQ music in Smash, we already have some of that anyway.

So you guys know that you can unlock the spirits for Partner Pikachu & Eevee if you have data for Let's Go right. I kinda predict the same could be said for Edelgard (if you get Three Houses) and Sylux (if get Prime 4 (or that rumored Prime Trilogy))

Honestly, that's fine with me. Midi can still sound pretty good, take Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask's soundtracks for example, the music in both still sounds very nice.

You guys are talking about the S-E rep and all.
What is the consensus in this thread regarding Geno and Sephiroth?

All the more reason there is no issue to begin with. Though I did say it a bit off earlier. Either Nintendo doesn't want DQ content, or Square-Enix says no if asked. Only two relevant and realistic factors. But my point was more that the composer just plain won't be an issue anyway. Regardless of whether they decide to pay him for his music or use different ones.

From the looks of things Geno sounds unlikely and currently Sephiroth doesn't have much going to support him other than being relatively popular.

Honestly we're talking about it far less than the Geno thread.

That's where the current discussion for it is going on despite how it should be occurring elsewhere, but that's neither here nor there.

Nomura's tweet and the absence of FF material doesn't give any strength to the possibility to you guys?

This one too.

They are if it's as low quality as it has been with DQXI.
There's a difference between the MIDI used in Ocarina of Time and FFVII and the one used in DQXI

As someone who is about to finish their first semester of college, it's only hard if you put off everything till the last minute.
Case in point? I have to write a research paper on a book regarding economic trends next Tuesday, but since I haven't really gotten far in the book, I've made the assignment harder on myself.
Honestly, it's one of those things where you tell yourself to work, yet your brain does as much as it can to push you away from doing it. It's a really tough habit to break and I'm still figuring out how to break it.
Speaking of which, I probably should get back to reading, but knowing myself, I'll probably just go back to reading everyone's posts. :p

It's 2 days until Smash Ultimate releases, and I still don't think being able to play Snake again after 10 years has hit me yet.

And this time, I can take it anywhere I want. Hold me.

Yes Idon, you were the one to say this! I remember it clearly! However, even after humoring your idea of it happening, the pace slowed to a crawl and now whe're a hundred pages away from making that dream a reality.

I don't think there is a consensus. Personally I think a DQ character makes way more sense to Nintendo and Square, assuming the rights can be worked out. But that's a huge assumption and I have no knowledge of the subject so yeah.
