Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Basically, on the scale of iconicness, the undeniably iconic ones are as follows:
:ultmario::ultluigi::ultdk::ultpikachu::ultpacman::ultsonic:
This is the "show this to anyone and they'll tell you exactly who they are" tier.

:ultbowser::ultpeach::ultlink::ultpokemontrainer::ultmiifighters::ultyoshi::ultwario::ultmewtwo:
This is the "We'll probably call them Princess/Zelda/Ash, but we know what they're from" tier.

Anything outside of this sees a notable drop, from what I've seen. That being said, there are some specific fringe cases.
Specifically:
:ultryu: - Many will recognize him, but not know his name, or even Street Fighter, but may recognize him as "a fighting game character." This is because Ryu himself has become an archetype.
:ultlittlemac: - Punch-Out!! is in a weird spot here. The game is generally very well known here in the States, being roughly the same tier as Frogger. Like Frogger, Punch-Out!! gets referenced and parodied here quite a bit (like being referenced in shows like Family Guy, and having ESPN parody it in a segment promoting the Maywether/Pacquiao fight from a few years ago, to name a few). However, this has more to do with being associated with Mike Tyson than anything, and most wouldn't be able to name Little Mac outright. This is also very region-specific, being mostly notable in the US.
I actually feel like Charizard could be up there in the Zelda/Ash Ketchum group. A lot of non-gamers seem to know him, as well as adults.

"Iconic" is subjective and we really shouldn't waste time arguing over it.
I think 'iconic' is more subjective to here (or other fan communities) specifically. Outside of forums scouring for information and campaigning for certain characters, 'iconic' has a pretty solid definiton and most people would agree on what things are 'iconic'.

EDIT: Ah. Sorry, I didnt realize there was a discussion on this already. Disregard what I said, then lol

I also wonder if we'll get Captain Falcon.
Or will we get

I hate to break it to yeah... but with GP Legend's poor sales, Climax's low review score, and the anime being obscure as hell in the west except for one specific scene...

Along with the fact that we have never seen any form of the GP anime in F-Zero games and if the Kirby games are to be noticed, it will likely never be mentioned....

I think the games will take more from GX...

But then again who knows for sure... If the trophies from Smash 4 are to be believed, the lore as of now seems to be a jumbled mess of anime and GX lore

I kinda used the Trainer as a catch-(em)-all because I didn't want a style clash by using Charizard's Smash 4 icon. :p
Definitely agree though!

Re: talking about Overwatch getting into Smash and citing Cloud as reason that it could happen.
Number of appearances Cloud had on Nintendo consoles before Smash 4: 3 (Kingdom Hearts and Theatrhythm; Final Fantasy)
Number of appearances Tracer has had on any Nintendo console: 0

Pretty much yeah.

You might be able to add Charizard to that second tier, or maybe a fringe case, people at least know it by name: "Shiny Charizard (Pokémon Card)" was a meme back in the day.

Lara Croft would definitely go in the top tier.

I think Kirby is iconic enough to be included in the second list. He's not as big as some of the other characters, but I feel like a lot of people (adults included) can actually call him by his name.

And I guess if I wanted to be nitpicky, all three Links could work in the second row too.

Seems like ever since that direct, things have started to die down here. I'm guessing people are either really salty about it and want nothing to do with it or just have nothing more to talk about since we know almost everything about the game now... I'm thinking it's the latter.

Another detail that could be nice about the new F- Zero title would be a summary about all the events from past titles done in a similar way to Metal Gear Solid 1.

Since some of the games are either exclusive to Japan or just hard to find, the option to learn about everything that happened before this entry in the form of a extense text or summary (like how MGS 1 explained the plot of the MSX Metal Gear games exclusive in Japan to the western public) would help newcomers of the series to understand the plot better.

I agree with everything except for Miis.

I get the Wii was huge but from personal experience the casual audience still doesn't know the Miis very well. Certainly not on the level of Yoshi, Peach or Ash/Pokemon Trainer.

Also Street Fighter in particular is pretty widely known, getting a lot of references in popular culture. I'd probably bump Ryu up to the "we know what they're from" tier.

Definitely the latter. Before the Direct I logged on here several times a day and stayed for at least an hour; now it's maybe once a day for a few minutes. There's just not much to talk about anymore.

I'm gonna go with StellerRJay StellerRJay and say the Square rep is Chocobo :yoshi:

Glad to have you on board my green friend! It would do Square Enix well to have the mascot of there Final Fantasy series in the game. Most people know what a chocobo is, so the relevance is there~

On another note, After about 10 years they finally revived the chocobo's dungeon series with a new game! Bringing the cute yellow bird into Smash would be a good way to promote his return and get people to see how amazingly adorable & skilled he is. With more people aware of our chibi feathery friend, maybe more people will buy his soon to be released game. Actually, I think it releases around the same time Smash's first DLC might arrive. Hard to say! It's just a random TBA winter release date.

But yeah, it would be a real shame to have his games die off again after just being brought back from limbo óvò

The line between Miis and Ryu was the hardest call for me, haha. On one hand, Wii Sports was a very, very big deal. On the other hand, whether or not they've retained that recognition is harder to say.

Even when we had less to talk about, a lot of people still participated in the pre-Grinch Smash speculation. I just think people are taking a breather. By now, they probably have a good idea of how likely their character is, and they don't really have the motivation to talk about it anymore.

Might not see a spike in activity until Ultimate gets released.

I had to visualize this. Opened up MS Paint and it turns out that actually, two would be required.
View attachment 176194
I'd like to hope that's still possible though. One more big "woah" character like Travis Touchdown or Rayman, and Geno. That'd be great! Perfect final day reveal.
Won't happen though.

(EDIT: Fixed picture, so that it would show, and structured everything better.)
Ugh, don't toy with my heart. The idea of them still having a top secret fighter in the game who shows up at the end of World of Light or something gets me all giddy. I know it's not possible but...

True. But we could always talk about the same ten DLC characters over and over again :p

I think that should be a thing, but only for the stuff that goes a bit unexplained or underdeveloped. F-Zero didn't start getting super lore heavy until X, where we got to learn about the incident, F-MAX, The Galactic Space Federation, Black Magic, and the other things. Let's also not forget the wrench that Deathborn's entire existence brings in with the creators, the belts, the incident, and his ties to Black Shadow.

We already have that character.

His name is Piranha Plant. :V
I don't really count PP because that move also moves its hurtboxes. I mean, Mega Man's Side Smash isn't considered the one with the largest reach either because it's a projectile

Well there's no too much to discuss.

And we dont really have any clue about the DLC content.

Still, I would like to be active over here... I got more time to play. I was college student during SSB4 era, so I couldnt really enjoy this community and the game itself.

I wouldn't sleep on Capcom's crazy chances.
Not sure about being above K Rool, but the likes of Twintelle and Elma would certainly turn heads given their respective popularity.
We have Mega Man, Ryu and Ken. I think it's best just to even everything out between the companies.

I will try to list every character who appears in Smash on any way, and is known and recognized by most of the persons that i know IRL outside of gaming.

I can also point out these: Shadow the Hedgehog, Bomberman a bit, Spyro and Crash.

Even everything out you say? As in give the existing companies 3 reps each?

Because if so, there's a certain yellow fox that'd fit in real well for Sega...

Also Square could get Sora and Geno

So... how would you rank the third party characters in Smash?
Not in terms of Tier List or how much you like them, just in terms of how much they fit Smash.
BTW, to make things easier, Echoes will not be listed

My list (personal opinion, BTW)
8. :ultbayonetta: She has ties to Nintendo and all, it's just that her suggestive nature doesn't really fit Smash that much in my opinion 6/10
7.:ultcloud: He may not have ties to Nintendo, But his franchise does, and he manages to fit in pretty well, especially alongside the Fire Emblem Characters 8/10
6.:ultsnake: Snake gets extra points for being the first third party character and introducing the concept in the first place. That being said, he's doesn't have quite as much ties to Nintendo as other characters on this list... 8/10
5.:ultpacman: He makes sense in terms of a game celebrating game icons... That being said, I feel like 4 other guest characters fit Smash more than he does. 8/10
4.:ultsimon: Being from a huge franchise from the NES days, Simon makes tons of sense... Also, he seems to blend into Smash very well... 9/10
3.:ultmegaman: I might as well call Mega Man a Nintendo character, as most of his games (But not all) were on the NES... 9/10
2.:ultryu: He fits perfectly... A fighting game character? Check... History with Nintendo? Check... Plays trues to his game of origin? Check... 10/10
1.:ultsonic: Do I need to say anymore? Ever since Snake opened up the door for guest characters in Smash, the number one choice that was on most people's minds was Sonic... Just having Mario and Sonic being able to duke it out in an official game is mind blowing, and his moveset blends well into Smash Bros... If I had to choose a character to represent third party characters in Smash as a whole, it would definitely be Sonic... hands down... 10/10

Let me know if he/she uploads ever uploads any of the Kid Icarus tracks, well, mainly looking for new tracks. Honestly the lack of new KI things, besides that Insight Staff item (while also losing Magnus as an assist trophy, which this one doesn't bum me out) really makes me sad sometimes. I'm starting to think KI itself didn't really get much love in this game at all besides like improved character details and expressions.

We're in a timeline where Bandai Namco who helped make the game, has only one rep.

It's not Capcom's fault if they've got the Wright characters that business and Smash is looking for more than others.

That said though, I am rooting for NiGHTS on Sega's end still, too.

So Ray Man came out for Brawlhalla today....

And man that is just so sad...

Because I tried it out and while you can have this colorful cast of unique characters and pepper in known people like Ray Man and Shovel Knight that **** doesn't matter if no one even feels different.

It all felt so same-y.

I'm disappointed Peach's Castle (64) without hazards doesn't remove the top ramps that just float there, otherwise maybe it could compete for some legality.
